Title: IBM Model M cable to suit 1986 1390131
Post by: mr626 on Wed, 23 November 2011, 02:12:53
Hi all,

I bid on a 1986 Model M 1390131 not expecting to win it...and I did! The only problem is it doesn't have a cable.

I don't have much money to spend, but I was hoping that someone might have a spare cable they'd be willing to part with. Doesn't have to be one of the super long ones, and doesn't have to be new.

I'm in Sydney, Australia, and am happy to pay postage + whatever price we agree on for the cable. Not in a rush for it (I can test/use the board on my existing Model M's cable I guess), so cheapest postage option is fine (well, as long as its still by air).

Can anyone help out?

Cheers

Thanks, I'll ask him.

EDIT: nope, he can't help (thanks anyway!).

The search continues...

Congrats on the win. Looks like you'll have to start restoration round 2 though.

Haha, I thought I recongised the username from ocau. Yeah, I enjoyed fixing up the first one so it will be good to fix up a older model. This time I have the right socket driver too, so I can properly examine the insides.

I probably have a cable, but maybe not an original. It can go in a flat rate envelope for $12US, I am away from home for a few days, I will check and decide on a price.

The 131 came with a shorter coiled black cord and large DIN5 plug, but I am pretty sure that you can plug in any cable from any Model M.

I don't know where you got it or what the description is, but you called the 131 an "older model" like that made it less desirable. In my opinion, the 131 is the best Model M of all, unless you like the new ones for their lighter weight and touch. My advice is to treat this as the special one, or at least take care of the upper case shell, the square aluminum logo is way cool. The inner metal plate will be heavier, too.

Do you want a beige PS2 cable, or are you set on the black DIN?

fohat.digs, thanks for the reply.

I didn't mean to imply that I thought the 131 was somehow 'worse' than the others- in fact it was hearing all of the positives about this particular model that made me bid on it in the first place. In many areas of my life I prefer older things, such as furniture, keyboards, music and single malts :-)

Thanks for the offer- that sounds great. Provided the PS/2 cable would work that would be perfect as I'm not looking for a perfect recreation of how it was from the factory, but rather something that I will actually use on a daily basis (so the PS/2 plus is more practical).

What I might do is double check that I can't source a cable locally (as that would obviously be better for me). If I don't have any luck, I'll PM you and we can go from there. Thanks!

Well if you are willing to pay a little more you could probably get a cable from Unicomp http://pckeyboards.stores.yahoo.net/cabdetmin.html but it wouldn't be the cheapest option I am sure. Just a fall back if nothing else works out.

Also on ebay there is 1 cable I saw being sold currently

Thanks bloodygood. Unicomp was one of the first places I checked. Cable would be US$16, shipping would be...US$44

That ebay listing would have been perfect, but it looks like its ended.

Do not despair it looks like the person re-upped for a lower price even or had a second one to sell.

You can ask Unicomp to ship in a $14 First Class Box. You can order some coloured keycaps and fresh springs if you're going to bolt mod too.
