Title: Shopping for my first mechanical keyboard; Blue vs brown vs black.
Post by: Nashtak on Tue, 29 November 2011, 21:36:41
Title says it all.

This seems like the best place to get help regarding my concerns in the process of buying my very first mechanical keyboard.

I have been hesitating between which keyswitches i want. I type a lot but my main concern is gaming. I play Battlefield 3, League of Legends and Starcraft 2.

I found a page explaining the differences; why blue is best for typing whereas black is great for gaming. Brown being the ''hybrid'', if you will.
But then i found other pages quoting starcraft 2 programers using cherry mx blue keyboards even though ''tapping'' is not as effective.

So far, i got my eyes on

Blue: Razer Blackwidow Ultimate ($20 off on newegg.ca + free shipping whereas standard is regular price + $13.39 shipping. Though they seem to have a bad reputation)
Das Model S (if i feel like paying $50 more, still need to do some more research)

Black: Thermaltake eSports Meka G1
          Steelseries 7G

For a first mechanical keyboard, brown is always a safe bet since it is jack of all trades, more than average for both typing and gaming.

Blue is excellent for typing and  a bit noisy if you have high APM and play RTS games like SC2.

Black is good for FPS with frequent tapping on WASD or cursor keys, but not too great for typing or RTS games.

Too bad you missed the 20% off promotion on Rosewill mechanical keyboards at newegg.ca 10 days ago!

You could've gotten a nice Rosewill RK-9000BR (brown) for around $90 + tax + shipping.

And last week the Rosewill RK-9000RE (cherry red) was $80 + tax + free shipping!

BTW I have the RK-9000RE and it is awesome for FPS games. For RTS, probably not so good - too easy to make a typo.

Like Tony said, brown is the safest bet for keyboard newb. It is a well balanced all purpose board (gaming typing, what have you)

Ya iMav, we need a dedicated subforum for newb to ask questions as mech board is getting more and more popular... this forum will only be flooded with newb questions.
