Title: Buying Cherry MY8000 for keycaps for Filco?
Post by: shawn o on Sat, 03 December 2011, 21:50:07
Would all the keycaps from the auction below fit on a Filco? I assumed they would but was reading and saw mention of an offset capslock and lower keys? Does that mean the stem on some of the keys is offset?

No, don't like double shots. Prefer the laser ones.

I would assume that the stems are offset on caps lock and the bottom row as a similar boards w/ doubleshots is that way.  It's workable with a little epoxy...

Why wouldn't you like the doubleshots one and prefer the lasered ones?

I'm not the OP, but I ASSume feel.  the doubleshots look sexy, but they are ABS while the lasered ones are PBT.

This, I have a set of lasered cherry keycaps that are more compatible for less $ if you want.

Black lasered Cherry keys are POM. White/grey/beige Cherry keys are PBT.

It is not only the offset keys that are incompatible with Cherry MX. All wide keys on a Cherry MY keyboards are too.
You can read more in this guide (http://deskthority.net/wiki/Cherry_MY#Key_cap_compatibility_with_Cherry_MX).

Ok... the stabilized keys. I'd never seen Cherry keys with the stabs molded in like that, odd. Won't be a problem on the older ones though.

Not entirely correct still. Here are the keys from G81 that will not fit filco compatibles and leopold:

Caps lock (also applies to g80 with stepped caps lock)
Ctrl
Alt
Win
Menu
Space bar (applies to all cherry boards)

The rest WILL fit.

Oh, I knew about the capslock and bottom row. I harvested most of my doubleshots from g81's. I'd just never seen the shifts, enter, backspace not compatible either. Since I was specifically talking about stabilized keys my statement was in fact correct.

ya...my brain is not working right these couple of days..

Anyway, to OP,

Get Clickey's set would be the safest option for you. If I am not mistaken, only the spacebar and the enter as well as the backslash won't fit out of the entire set. Thats 3 keys not fitting as compare to the potentially 9 keys if you get the MY8000.

Or you could for the enter key and the backslash sake get that ebay deal as well... to make everything complete.
