Title: My Kingdom for some side printed colored keycaps
Post by: emptythecache on Thu, 15 December 2011, 22:45:05
I don't know if these even exist, but I'm looking for side printed colored keycaps (a la filco ninja). Ideally looking for red, blue, or yellow, but really I just want something other than black or white. If someone could point me in the right direction, I'd owe you...my kingdom I guess. Which really just includes my apartment and my cat. She's pretty cool though, it's probably worth it.

The member Qtan on here has some in his store:

Other options exist, too. This is just the first thing that sprung to my mind.
I don't need your kingdom, but if you want to post or PM me a picture of your cat, I'd look at it :) I can't have one in my apartment, and I dearly miss mine at home. It'll be good to see her again over the holidays.

I just bought a side printed rainbow set from Imsto.  They are actually the same set dorkvader just posted in white, except they have been graciously dyed.  You can do that with PBT caps BTW.  I would rather save myself the trouble for now, but I've been meaning to make a nice green or purple set with Rit dye sometime.

They are pictured in the op of this thread on a white Filco (full size)http://geekhack.org/showthread.php?21177-new-group-for-KBC-keycaps-including-104 (http://geekhack.org/showthread.php?21177-new-group-for-KBC-keycaps-including-104)

Yes.  You can only dye the keys made of PBT material (at least with Rit Dye).  That is the best method that people have found around here.  Somewhere there are detailed cooking instructions for whipping up a batch of dye and avoiding melting your keys (yes, the dye must be about 80 deg. celcius), but I was only able to find this with a quick search.  Note that not many people have tried it with new PBT keys for cherry MX (due to the risk involved).  Usually they use old keyboards to test on, like old apple, IBM, or unicomp boards.

Good Luck!
