Title: Buying my first mechanical keyboard
Post by: veyg on Thu, 22 December 2011, 02:35:42
Hi, I'm new here, and I've heard you guys are the best for advice on keyboards.

I'm looking to pick one up in the near future and I would say my budget is $150.

I have looked around and decided, since I will be mainly using it for FPS games, that MX Black switches are for me.

A tenkeyless would be best, but i don't absolutely need it.

So which mx black board for fps's would you guys recommend?

the filco majestouch 2 tenkeyless caught my eye, but if you guy have ideas on what would be a better choice for fps gaming then im all ears. i want to make sure before i spend about 150 bucks haha.

Can't really give you advice about a MX black keyboard as I prefer by far my HHKB2, my keyboard to win LANs and competitions on fast fps. But I think that with a Filco Tenkeyless Majestouch 2 you can't go wrong. When I wanna play clicky, the only keyboard is the model M for fps. A Filco for MX black is nice. If you wanted a standard layout (not Tenkeyless) the Steelseries 6gV2 would have been cost saving for you.

Have you actually tested the MX black switches? If not I definitely recommend testing the entire range of Cherry MX switches as well as others such as topre switches. Try before you buy. As far as the Filco goes you can't go wrong with them, every Filco I have ever used has been amazing and the same goes for the majority of the feedback I have read. There are more affordable keyboards that are the same if not better for around the same or cheaper price wise. I've heard good things about the CM Storm Quickfire Rapid keyboard, and for what I have read it was made with gaming in mind. Do some more digging.

Perhaps you would enjoy MX Reds?

Play safe Filco is the way to go if you want a TKL. HHKB Pro 2 is too expensive and is only 45g so if you prefer blacks HHKB pro 2 is not for you for the previous resons.
Leopold is a nice boards but if your budget is 150 better getting Filco than Leopold

Before you buy try to see the following locally to test the black switches. They had too much resistance for me to be comfortable.

Full size
Thermaltake meka g1
Steel series g6v2 and g7

Tenkeyless
Coolermaster storm rapid fire

Try to pick a good vendor that will allow returns. I am having to go through a few switch types to find the right keyboard for me.

If you can't try anything locally both amazon and newegg are pretty good about returns. People in the USA can try filco boards all day long! Lucky!

If you end up thinking the blacks are too heavy, but like the way they feel go with reds. They are the same linear switch with less resistance.
