Title: Looking for an outstanding Cherry MX Brown keyboard.
Post by: Japex on Sat, 31 December 2011, 20:06:52
Well, as of now I have a fairly decent budget of somewhere around $150. This will be my first mechanical keyboard outside of an old IBM keyboard that my Dad owns. I've decided the Cherry MX Browns would be the best choice seeing as I'm going to be doing lots of typing and a bit of gaming. Before I knew about switch types and what not I was looking into a Happy Hacker Keyboard Lite2 but I've decided that would be a waste of money. Now I currently have my eye on a Filco Majestouch 2 Tenkeyless but I'm not sure if it's the best bang for my buck.

So if any of you could suggest something better (if there is anything better) that would be nice.

Since this is your first post, welcome to Geekhack. =)  And you can't go wrong with a Filco...  really.  Also good call on that HHKB Lite 2.  If you like the size, save up and get the real HHKB Pro 2.  One of the best keyboards ever, imo. =P

How about a semi-custom or custom WASD keyboard (http://www.wasdkeyboards.com/) ? They're getting excellent reviews around here.

I'm just exactly sure about the quality of these and I don't see any specific details about switch types, etc. but the overall concept seems cool.

I am using a Filco brown at work and it's excellent. WASD is fine too with customized keycaps.

If you like the HHKB, but can't afford it, perhaps the KBC Poker is for you? It's the closest to a HHKB in Cherry MX and only cost about $80 for the standard abs keycaps version. Not better build quality than Filco, but a very good keyboard. It's the best Cherry mini keyboard around in my opinion.

G80-3484HKCUS-2 for doubleshot browny goodness. But you will need to use a taobao agent. I personally hate browns. I'm a red and clear kinda guy. And yes, I do realize that those are both the lightest and toughest switches. I'm just weird I guess. But that is a plus here.

Either go with Filco or WASD. I have a Filco Brown and it's quality is amazing. Some people think WASD is even better but they don't sell a Tenkeyless.

I ended up purchasing the Filco. Now I'm just hoping that I won't have any trouble with this switch type seeing as I will be playing some MMOs and I'm only used to rubber dome keyboards.

If you  do give it a week or 2 and you should be used t it by then.

It really is amazing how we adjust.  I busted out my old Logitech G15 yesterday just for curiosity and tried typing on it.  I was shocked at how awful and "different" it felt after only a couple weeks using mechanicals.  I mean, I enjoyed my transition to mechanical switches immediately but it wasn't until I tried typing on rubber domes again after a few weeks that I could truly appreciate the difference and know I would never, ever be going back.

Japex, I believe the Filco is a great choice, and out of all three of my boards is easily the "best" in terms of quality and type experience.  It just feels so solid and smooth to type on.  Enjoy!

Both WASD and Filco are probably better than the current Leopolds (which got reports of controller and usb connector problems recently).

The keyboard is finally here and this thing is ****ing amazing. It's as if I'm typing on a pile of boobs. Each keypress is so light and accurate and the sounds that it produces are outstanding. My hands never seem to tire while typing on this bad boy. I think I'm in love. Even now I'm typing out long paragraphs just so I can constantly type on this board. I'm very happy with my purchase. :3
