Title: FPS Keyboards?
Post by: turboRush on Sat, 14 January 2012, 10:15:40
Hi GH,

I was wondering if there was any benefit of buying a keyboard specifically for FPS gaming? Is there any real benefit with mechanical, membrane, or anything other types of keyboards for FPS specific gaming?

I have a wireless keyboard that I am looking to replace for obvious reasons so if anyone could help that would be awesome!

Thanks,
turbo

Its just feels nice on your fingers. This is the benefit you get from it (:
Its like having a comfortable chair... is this going to make game better? Probably not but you will feel more comfy :3

I have a bunch of different types. I play games on any of them. Though I don't particularly do so competitively.

keyboards won't improve your gaming performance IMO. I bought my mechanicals because they are better ergonomically for me(i have a tenkeyless so my hands are closer together) and because they feel way better than rubber domes.

I recently got a mechanical, and I play a fair amount of FPSs.

It has browns in it.  I like it; it feels a bit more responsive and "sure".

They aren't the same as rubber domes.

Used my filco with reds last night playing battlefield. Vast improvement over my other boards. Just felt better doesn't mean I played better! :)

This pretty much describes the feeling.

Several posts may say that it won't improve your gaming. I don't quite agree that it won't improve your game, or at least not directly.

Long practice sessions are required to improve. And If you're sitting in an uncomfortable stool like I am right now, you'll last probably just last a few hours using your computer. Using a better chair will help make you last in practice sessions. The analogy goes for your keyboard although you might not notice it.

(edit: hmm.. maybe I should get a chair instead of a keyboard then)

I like to play fps games the most on browns. The main thing for me is the non ghosting though, not the switch type.

I think you mean non-blocking

I meant non ghosting. I really hadn't ran into problems with key blocking, because the old keyboard I used to use didn't have key blocking.

Even my model M has blocking. I have never actually seen a ghosting board. Just running into what it stops you from doing.

Just to add - don't feel restricted by the switch type you choose. I play mainly FPS on MX Blues and that's been rated as 'bad' for gaming although I find there is no trouble at all in terms of performance K/D ratio etc is concerned. In terms of noise I don't find them noisy when playing since I use headphones and they seem to muffle the sound. Although if you on skype or teamspeak just be aware that your teammates will hear the clicking of the keys, that seems to be the no 1 complaint. I also came from a wireless board and will never go back to one, I don't think wireless or at least the one I had did not have 6KRO so when I got my Filco I could now move everywhere - the freedom was amazing plus I didn't have to faff about with any batteries!

I use this as an opportunity to brag about my keyboard and make everyone supremely jealous. Everyone seems IMPRESSED that you can still buy keyboards that click.

I've used a lot of keyboards over the years trying to find "the right one" for (FPS) gaming.  I switched from non-mech keyboards to one with Cherry blacks a few years ago.  It was an improvement, but I didn't settle until recently, when I got a Leopold with red switches.  I've customized it with key caps from elitekeyboards and WASD, along with dampener rings from the latter (which are awesome).  I consider it to be my ideal (FPS) gaming set up.
