Post by: trax on Fri, 20 January 2012, 11:06:03
Im thinking of getting a topre board (hhkb) but im just wondering about 1 thing.

Sorry I'm boycotting answering Geekhack Cell Phone user questions.

It's a matter of principle with me.

So we should only use the site at home in front of our pc? How does that make sense?

yeah, Tapatalk sucks because I can't access the Wiki from it (unless you sort by "Latest" and there's an update in there.)

Red cherry switch information (http://geekhack.org/showwiki.php?title=Cherry+Corporation+Switch+Wiki)

Dont really get the point of doing this...
Im on a boring public bus 3 hours a day and dont feel like doing nothing...
My HHKB trade just went south...
Still unsure on what switch type to buy next.

I recommend bookmarking my Sig for maximum Geekhack efficiency.  I'm 95% of the good content here anyways.  You ever figure out that CST LaserTrak thing.  Lots of pics in my sig of how the bearings should be seated - sometimes they dislodge when shipped.

oh i didn't know that, i'll tear it down this weekend *goes back to reading your huge ****ing signature content*

Do you stand in front of your mirror everyday and ask: "Mirror, Mirror..."?

I'm sorry I just had to comment.

I am also new and admittedly ignorant forum member. So I am sorry for not reading through all the wiki first before I posted anything.

So why don't we do this instead: Let's just all read the wiki and then discuss random off topic things in the threads? I am guessing the wiki probably already has almost all the information we need anyway - lets just read that and not discuss anything about keyboards at all.

Why don't we do it in real life as well! Lets just not ask any questions to doctors, engineers or any kind of expert/specialist and lets just all read the whole wikipedia website instead or go back to college all over again.

I am just fed up clicking a link here hoping to find a good discussion and all I find are just "read this-read that-google-it" replies OR much worse just posts that have nothing to do with the thread started.

I will shut up now because yeah maybe I am the stupid one here. I'll just continue lurking.

I have no problem reading various Wiki. In fact, most of the time when I want to know something, to get a starting point, I would go to Wikipedia. That said, there are many times, when reading the a wiki take a long time and we just want a quick answer. I don't know if it's only me, other members can correct me if I am wrong, although I see the "old" members less less active on geekhack. I am under the impression that the Philosophy of geekhack has changed a lot. In the past, the usual answers were: "This or that. You can get more detailed explanation in such or such wiki." Now, most of the time I see "Check the wiki." It's starting to sound like some Linux forums I have been in the past: Did you read the documentation? Did you check the man pages?

Now I know what you mean.  Sorry, next time you can always ask in my subforum - I don't really follow all the other ones that closely any more.
Is this the first time I've seen ripster apologized for being a douche or being wrong?

Maybe LOL!

I have been here long enough to know to not take Ripster's mood seriously. That said, I have a question for Ripster: Do you behave the same way with your wife?

I don't know what you mean by how much weight the Topre switch can push up compared to the Cherry MX red. I have very limited experience with Cherry MX Red, so take what I am going to say with a grain of salt, or even with a few grains of salt.

I find my Topre switches to bounce back in their initial position very quickly. However, I have the impression that the Cherry MX red switches bounce back much faster. Is my opinion valid? I don't know. Perception plays a big role in my opinion.

Keep in mind that some people have found/perceive a significant difference between the Topre switch on the Topre keyboard and the Topre swicth on the HHKB. The whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

I thought the difference between realforce and hhkb was because of the the plate mounting in a hhkb? The switches would be the same and the key travel would be identical, and the response to my question would be the same if you tried the either realforce or hhkb. Thanks for the input.

@Ripster? Was I not nice to you? :(

Maybe, maybe not. I have never tried a HHKB.

I technically did with my post.
The Cherry Red's have an actuation force of 45g and the HHKB uses 45g weighted topre switches, so they are pretty much the same in terms of just pure force wise. I've only tried Blues and Blacks so I can't comment on the rest of the feel of Reds compared to Topres though.

Don't mind Ripster, he's a proud insecure prick.  Although on a technical note, it's not the spring in the Topre that really imparts the force, it's the rubber cup itself.  The spring is there primarily to register the key, not impart force.  But to your question, the force will be similar, but the feel will be quite different.

Actually that's technically wrong too.

So Munis in 2012?  Should I bail?

you should invest any money you have and time in some education. It's the best form of investment a man can made, it'll give you the best rate of return. It would also make you a little less annoying.

the spring only contributes roughly 5g of foce. Topre is just a good quality rubber dome.
