Title: Only change feather in a cherry mx switch?
Post by: hei on Mon, 30 January 2012, 14:27:05
Hi

I am wondering if you can open a cherry mx brown switch and change the feather in it to a feather from a black switch ? Is there anything bad with doing this ?

Feather? That doesn't make sense. Do you mean spring or stem?

I hope you don't have feathers in your switches. Don't pluck chickens over your keyboards.
You can swap springs and/or stems in switches. A lot of us here do to put switch on board that does not come with a particular type, or to make hybrids. Depends on the board on how involved it is, but if you do it correctly it won't cause problems.

Seeing a feather in your Topre, I fear finding out what hair that is on your F2.

Hahaha...that's actually not a hair, believe it or not -- I know it looks bad...

Lol.Why do you have feathers just sitting around so you could do that...

I think the guy either means springs/stems.

I know. And I laughed again looking at the picture.

OP to answer your question, Yes you can. But you can't open a switch that is plate mounted without desoldering the switch from the board.

First of all: :becky:

Dunno if hei is from Germany, as feather and spring are the same word in german.

Switching springs is easy enough, unless the switches are plate mounted.

Video was shown (http://geekhack.org/showthread.php?26389-Kinesis-Advantage-w-Reds&p=500298&viewfull=1#post500298) to me by sordna and made changing the Cherry MX brown keys on the thumb cluster of my Kinesis Advantage a lot easier than resoldering. :)

As for the effect of replacing the spring in the brown switch with one from a black, the Wiki might be of help. ;)

Update: I guess I took a while posting, sorry for the redundancy. ;)
