Title: How do you press modifier keys on the sides of space bar?
Post by: spremino on Thu, 09 February 2012, 16:38:00
I use my thumbs, except for those farther from the space bar, for which I use my ring fingers or my pinkies.

EDIT:  Just curiosity about different habits..  This guy (http://xahlee.org/emacs/swap_CapsLock_Ctrl.html) presses the Control keys with his palms.

I use either, depending where the letter is that I need to hit.  For some reason, I don't use the right modifiers.

Tip of pinky on Ctrl.
Retract hand and hit WIN using middle finger.
Alt with side of thumb (only thumb reaching back)

My capslock has been remapped to left control, so I rarely hit the original left control. I use right control a lot while navigating textboxes and editors that aren't vim.

Left alt = left thumb
Left win = left pinky
Right alt = right thumb
Right win = right pinky
Right Context menu = right pinky (yes, I actually use this key)

I use my thumbs for alts and my pinkies for the others, like any other sane person would do.

I use palm for left Control unless I can remap caps to control, and thumb for left Alt and Win.
I usually don't  use right modifiers.

Thumbs for alt, pinkies for the windows key. I swap ctrl and caps lock, because the default position for ctrl is stupid.

What's a Windows key?

My Ctrls and Alts are single-key sized and tucked together next to the spacebar. I don't know if it's better, it's just what I'm used to.

For Ctrl, it seems sometimes I use my thumb, sometimes my pinky, sometimes my ring finger. Probably depends on the key combination. Left-Alt seems to be just the thumb, but Right-Alt is either thumb or ring finger. Always opposite hand, though; I gave up the same-hand habit when I gave up the WordStar-compatible editor commands. I've gotten so soft in my old age.

On a more standard-layout board I stick to pinky fingers for Ctrl and thumbs for Alt, but I spend as little time as possible on one.

What's a Windows key?

Yet another handy modifier that can be used for lots of key combo goodness instead of ctrl+alt or similar.  All the Win-ley mods can be disabled in Windows, and of course it can be handy in Linux too.

Not everyone thinks the Windows key is handy. In the standard layout, it sits in what used to be an empty space. A friend of mine got so frustrated by accidental Windows keypresses that he just ripped the key out. (He later got a couple of used Model Ms and has been pleased as punch ever since.) There is something very satisfying about using physical force to solve computing problems...

I've never accidentally hit the windows keys.

I also actually find it useful for launching applications quickly/shutting down my PC.
