Title: / WTT: Doubleshot keycaps, almost MX
Post by: Echofoot on Mon, 13 February 2012, 11:12:00
Hello,
I went to the thrift store and found, what I think are doubleshots. They were harvested from a Smith-Corona typewriter so hence the strange formatting. The profile and shapes of the keys are all uniform, and they measure to be the same standardized key size, with the majority of the modifiers at x1.5 (lock and the backspace keys are at x1.25). At a quick glance the stem appear to be MX compatible, but upon further investigation with my trusty digital calipers they are slightly too large for the Cruciform standoffs of the MX variety.

*DISCLAIMER* my calipers have some years on them and have not been calibrated since the factory when they were made so these measurements might be slightly askew.

Might be a good mod project for someone with more experience, as I do not yet have the confidence to risk ruining perfectly good caps.

They were fairly clean when I picked them up, but I gave them a quick bath and a light scrub with an Oxyclean solution. Looks to be slight yellowing of the white, but other than that and the occasional sprue marking on the non-visible side of the cap, they appear to be pristine.

Not sure exactly what these might be going for, as I am fairly new to all of this. But if you are interested, feel free to PM me with any other info that you might need.

Thanks!

That's not going to work.  See the All About Keys wiki - geometry section.

Hello Ripster,

I thought that I poured over all the wikis here and did my homework.
I understand that the "BigAss" tab and enter shaped keys would not be compatible due to their unique shape(and the spacebar), but why would the others not?

I have some cherry doubleshots that I matched with these and their footprints seemed to mate fairly well. I don't have the exact measurements that I took last night in front of me so I couldn't tell you the tolerances I was dealing with, but they seemed to have the same width and length.
As for their height, well they are on the larger size so profiles might be an inhibiting factor in their usage.

Concerning the stems, I did note that they would need to be modded to be usable with cherry mx switches.

Edit: for adding details

Once you dremel out the four supports they will fit on a regular cherry stem...im sure of it.

Those are some really interesting keys. I would love to see a pic of them on a board. Good Luck!
