Title: question for HHKB users
Post by: verbel on Tue, 14 February 2012, 02:14:56
I have a quick HHKB question. I just picked one of these up and I am not really sure what I think at the moment. My speed is down as the keys seem to be just different enough that I miss type a lot. I imagine with time this will change. My main question is I use the windows key a lot during the day to run things using windows – R and I cannot get this to work with the board. I tried changing the 4th and 5th dip switch setting to turn on the meta key but it doesn’t seem to work. Am I missing something? Any help with this would be appreciated.

Try turning on both SW1 and SW2.

I just got a hhkb as of today,
everytime you change a DIP switch you have to reboot the keyboard (pull the usb cable in and out)

I also use the winkey and now got it configured as the big button on the left of the spacebar
settings: 011100
due some reason I have to use macintosh, even when Im on win7

Thanks for the input everyone. I left the board at work so I will try putting it in MAC mode tomorrow and give it a go. I tried combinations of 4 and 5 but no go there. I made sure that it was unplugged every time I made changes to the DIP switches, and I have been following the settings on elitekeyboards.

well when I try 011100 the right windows key works now so I am happy about that. I can't get the left one to do anything though. I wonder if there is something wrong with the board or if this is just how it works with Win7. I need to try a machine with a different OS to try out.

If you are fine with only one Fn key on right, why don't you try 011010.

Left Alt = Left Win
Left Meta = Left Alt
Right Meta = Right Alt
Right Alt = Right Win

By flipping 5th switch on, you are swapping Alt and Win and by flipping 4th switch off you are using all alt and meta keys.

If you turn on 4th switch, you are making left Meta key to be Fn key, which is why you don't get anything.

Elitekeyboards has some information on the dip switch settings...

Ah I see now! I feel a little dumb. I was not understanding that I was turning the left meta key into the function key. It makes sense now that I look at the dip switch chart and read your post. Your 011010 suggestion works perfect Limmy, thanks very much.

I like DIP switches. I don't like to mess with software when I can use an external switch to make the changes I need.

Keyboards without DIP-switches are boring.

Is it possible to exchange ALT and 'diamond' key position? So that alt will be next to space.

By flipping 5th switch on, you are swapping Alt and Win.
