Sixty compared them to blues. Because for me, blues sound like cracking egg-shells and because of Sixty's description of the whites I sayd they must then sould like cracking mushrooms. I don't have any idea how they feel ...

Oooh intrigued by how the white switches would feel and sound. Also, correct me if I'm wrong but the green switches have been described as stiffer blues. That right?

I put in an order for 110 of the whites. I've never tried blues, but I'm sure this'll be good, too.
Now to get some decent blank clear keycaps for them.

I plan to make the extras into keychains.

Also I'm guessing these are not plate mounted versions, or am I wrong?

I've already ordered switches in the Phantom GB. If I want to order more of the same types of switches, do I need to message Phantom with the total number of switches (Phantom GB + additions) or just the additions?
Title: [MO] Cherry MX Switch group buy (no day left)!!!
Post by: dorkvader on Sun, 26 February 2012, 09:40:34
Autolyze: Send the updated amount. Like if you want to change from 100 to 110 (like I did) just say:
MXWHITE 110

I think I'm going to do a mix-switched phantom, like what they do on those ducky 'boards. I don't know if having MX white, clear, and green will be that much a difference, though.

So what's the difference (besides colour) between these and greens?

'cause if it's nothing, I think I'll have greens for the alphanumeric, and whites for the modifiers (and everything else), just for looks.

What exactly are the differences between the PCB and non-PCB versions? I'm just interested in replacing some existing switches on a PCB mounted keyboard by replacing the stem, spring and it seems like maybe the top half of the housing for these locking ones as they look different.
Title: [MO] Cherry MX Switch group buy (no day left)!!!
Post by: sordna on Tue, 28 February 2012, 11:00:36
The PCB version has 2 plastic legs/pins on the bottom, for additional stability. It expects 2 extra holes in the PCB. These plastic pins can be easily cut off if you want to convert the switch to a non-PCB mount.

Post by: mkawa on Tue, 28 February 2012, 11:03:46
you can implement function layer locking in software (a la the poker), so you don't strictly need a locking switch if that's all you want.
Title: [MO] Cherry MX Switch group buy (no day left)!!!
Post by: sordna on Tue, 28 February 2012, 11:06:56
By they way, Dox posted pics of the switch starting here:
http://geekhack.org/showthread.php?23453-Ordering-from-onlinecomponents&p=445194&viewfull=1#post445194
and he is also saying the switch parts (except for the spring) are not interchangable, so it looks like you will not be able to just install the switch housing top and stem; you'll have to desolder an existing switch if you want to replace it with a latching one.

Ah, you added the lockable [strike]buttons[/strike] switches! I was going to contact you with regards to this but it seems I didn't have to. I love you for this! :) I'll order 40 of the plate mountable switches, and 5 of the pcb ones. Would order more if I could, but you're already going to get 95% of the money in my bank account and I can't spare the rest. Haha, the sad part is that that's actually true...

Also, I'm a bit confused about this:

MXGREY        MX1A-D1NN      0.6
MXDARKGREY MX1A-D1NN      0.9*

The manufacturer's number is the same, but the ordering name you gave is different and the price is different. I tried to order some from Phantom before but it either got ignored, or, what I assumed, it got merged with MXGREY because they're the same.

The switches with LEDs will have to be desoldered before modding, but all the others are easy to pop open while still attached to the PCB.

Wouldn't a locking key use up one of your NKROvers?  No biggie if you truly have N=all, but if N=3, that would seem to be a bad idea.  Or is it a SPST NO with a momentary closed state between down and up states?

Oddly, Filco just uses another of whatever switch they use in the rest of the keyboard.  e.g.: an MX blue in an MX blue board; an MX brown in an MX brown board....

Ripster: MX whites supposedly are exactly the same as blues except: different color stem, different spring (80cn instead of 50cn).  Don't you people read the wikis?  ;-P

Modifier keys like shift don't count toward your NKRO, so as long as you don't do something silly like install this switch as your letter A key, it's like holding shift down.

I will order as many as I need for a couple of years. I'm not alone.

To be serious: There will be another switch group buy along with the next keyboard project, but I doubt there will be so many exotic switvches available like the greys and geens for example.

I would like to combine this with my phantom order:

1. 1x MXLOCKPCB
2. 1x MXBLUE
3. 2x MXWHITE
4. 1x MXCLEAR
5. 1x MXRED
6. 1x MXBROWN
7. 1x MXLOCK

Do I just send this order to "Phantom"? And will it be combined with the phantom group buy, or will it charge me separate shipping for this order?

Has this order been sent yet? I'd love a delivery of whites to the UK.

I will order from the supplier today and shipping will be in around 4-5 weeks.

MXWHITE 101
MXGREEN 1
MXLOCK 10
MXLOCKPCB 10

Just send in the message to Phantom.

Are there shipping options for the UK?

MXWHITE 90 is enough to replace the browns from my UK majestouch ninja tkl with whites (the box says 88 keys)?

Do I need any diodes to keep NKey rollover?

Can anyone link me an example of how to switch the innards of the current switches with the new ones, without soldering?

For shipping, use
SHIPEUCHEAP

The diodes are only necessary for building new keybaords (like the Phantom) if you want to replace brown stems by white, you will not need to order diodes.

You just have to pop open the 4 latches and pull out the brown slider along with the spring once the cover came up. Does not work for platemounted switches, BTW. These must be desoldered first, except if you own the innovative Phantom keyboard!

it wasn't even known that these white switches were available until after the phantom gb closed. it's still not clear what their characteristics are, as the people who have them haven't measured them, and cherry doesn't have a datasheet up for them. i think we managed pretty good volume for them considering.

Title: [MO] Cherry MX Switch group buy (no day left)!!!
Post by: The_Ed on Mon, 05 March 2012, 04:22:54
You will have to change the firmware. The lock switch is ON-OFF instead of momentary ON.
Title: [MO] Cherry MX Switch group buy (no day left)!!!
Post by: bpiphany on Mon, 05 March 2012, 04:53:07
The LED is not in the exact same location on the lock switches as on the regular ones (I'm quite sure at least). You might be able to trick it into working by bending the LED leads. I don't think you would want to make the caps lock into a locking switch though, without remapping it to something else. I'm not sure it would behave any well. And besides that the caps lock led lights up from the caps lock "state" being on, not holding shift (which would be the roughly similar thing). It is controlled through the keyboard controller, which will know nothing of your changing of switches...

oh no i'm lost already.

i thought if you press the MXLOCK switch, the switch will lock into a pressed position (thus sending one keystroke to the computer) and returns to the default position if pressed again (thus sending another keystroke to the computer).

from my point of logic, what is different from the actual usage?

thank you..

The lock switch is ON-OFF, a regular mx switch is momentary ON.

When you press the lock switch it stays down and continually sends signal. When you press it again it comes back up.

When you press a regular mx switch it sends the signal once and comes back up.

The keyboard controllers firmware would have to be changed to go into capslock state when there is continuous signal. Because normally a single signal toggles the capslock state.

The LED would already have to be desoldered to install the lock switch. The holes look to be in the same place as a regular mx switch so you shouldn't have a problem resoldering it.

Just pressed my Caps lock key down for a while. It stays on. To switch it off with the lock switch, you have to press it once more to release and then once again to set the Caps Lock state to off. Not exactly the effect it should have. It would be better to map it to a modifier key (like Shift) or really change the firmware.

Looky, looky at that... I was under the impression that the switch housing was going to be quite different, but the bottom at least looks just the same, except it actually looks like the leftmost holes are not holes. So I guess that might work if the leads don't get in the way of something else in there.

But soon, they will be genuine Cherry MX switches!

I paid a while back. Just wanting to confirm I did everything right if it's not too much work for ya! thanks!

I googled "domina@sm.xxx"...

http://lmgtfy.com/?q=%22domina%40sm.xxx%22 (http://lmgtfy.com/?q=%22domina%40sm.xxx%22)

What sites are you on 7bit?

Click images if you're not at work.

I just thought out that domain name and e-mail address. Are these links to keyboard porn sites?

Not keyboard porn, just porn. I googled it out of curiosity because "domina@sm.xxx" sounded like "domination@sadomasochism.xxx".

Only filthy worn out used ones. That's why I only buy NIB!

In all seriousness I still can't find anywhere that even mentions that they once sold the MXSUPERGREYs... Who put them in the wiki?

I think that was me, but I did not want to add them because I did not want to wait any longer with the order. There should be another switch group buy along with the next keyboard project.

I'm thinking about making a full keyboard of MXSUPERGREY. That would be cool, but I'm guessing they would be considerably louder than blues. But I can always crank my klipsch speakers or HD650 to drown that out. Reds are king for videogames, but typing is still up for grabs with me. I will be filling 10 of the 15 spots on my STB (Switch Try Board) with switches from this GB. MXSUPERGREY and ML (with an ML keycap) would make that 12. What should the final 3 be?

Also, as I understand it the group buy is closed and 7bit has already placed the order with his supplier. It doesn't matter if he's allowing people to order more though as he's just selling from the reserve. This isn't delaying anything for anyone.

What exactly do you (7bit) have in your reserve? There are a couple posts a few pages back that just say to "order what you want from his reserve." If there indeed is an opportunity to buy leftovers I'd be incredibly interested. Can't believe I missed this the first time around.

So worst case, what if he took the money and ran? Paypal disputes?

7bit should call him up and tell him to get his ass in gear. We all want our switches that we already paid for months ago damnit!

I don't think I'd open a paypal dispute unless even 7bit thinks he ran. And if he did run I hope 7bit will still send me my switches.

With his feedback score it seems highly unlikely he ran. But come on, how hard could it be to send 7bit the money and paid list? Even the busiest person has some spare time...

Isn't there a time limit on how long you can file a dispute? I understand he may be busy, but even a 2 minute "hey, I have the money but am really busy for X days" would suffice.

Or rather, not organize in the first place if he/she does not have sufficient time.

I got the list and will send out spam later today.

He told us he had to remove the chads inside the holes (10000 of them), so this kept him busy for a while.

So I adjusted the price, I hope I didn't make a mistake xD.

This isn't really closed, they are left overs.

But there are no MX clear leftovers. But you can preorder some, and as soon as this GB gets to 800 MX switchs, 7bit will order some.

But he might redo it, to include PCB mounted switchs.

There might be a lot of interest in another switch GB as the Ergo keyboard project comes to a head. Guess we'll just have to wait and see.

7bit: I (we) have been _extremely_ patient so far, but I can tell you that I'm just about to loose my patience. You stated earlier that "Switches will ship within the next few days (20-27 July 2012)", and the 27th is 17(!) days ago, but I have still not received my switches! I did not order any "phantom parts", only switches, so there is no reason for you to take this long to ship them. (Please note that I'm not counting the days from the previously promised shipping dates.)
Please keep in mind that by continuously delaying the shipping of our switches, you not only piss people off, but you reflect badly on the whole group buying community that we have here. I, for one, feel reluctant to join another group buy after this experience and if others feel the same, this might hurt those that wish to participate in a group buy.
So I sincerely ask of you, get organized and get those switches shipped ASAP!!!

Best Regards
/Nakkor

Any group buy this large will take its time man, I too have not received my switches just wait it out; they will eventually get to you. I'm sure there are plenty of people in the same boat as us.
