Title: White Keyboards
Post by: Jmaverick on Wed, 29 February 2012, 22:11:17
Does anyone have a Filco white and Leopold White side by side in a picture? It's hard to tell which is whiter in pics on the web.

Thanks in advance.

If I weren't trolling... I'd say this thread is racist! Racist I tell ya! But I'm trolling.

I've heard the Filco is proper white.
I know for a fact that the Leo isn't very white. See the review in my sig.

Be aware that the Leopold is decidedly* not white, but very light beige/grey.

*I decided it.

I have a white leopold and have also found that pictures don't really convey the color very well. Here's my attempt using HTML color codes. You know, for grins. :becky:

This is white.
This is the color of the Leopold.

I spent way more time than I should have choosing the HTML color code that most closely matched my Leopold. What is wrong with me... :nerd:

That awkward moment when you realize everyone's LCD is going to display a different shade depending on their model / age / settings / etc.

Dumb question inc; Do white boards/caps start to turn crusty colored after awhile?

The "crusty" color you're talking about, which everyone has seen thanks to the older "white" computer cases and CRT monitor cases, is actually caused by a two different factors. The plastic used on those white computer cases is actually ABS (same as these keyboard). However, ABS is flammable, and computer/monitor cases generate lots of heat and have high voltage electricity running through them, so to meet safety standards Bromine is added as a fire retardant to the ABS. Bromine reacts chemically to heat and UV light, and this chemical reaction causes the ABS to start to turn brown, which combined with the white pigment makes the yellow or "crusty" color. Since most computer parts are not exposed to sunlight, it's mainly the heat that causes the discoloration over time.

Keyboards do not generate heat (your fingertips are probably warmer than any heat generated in the keyboard itself). My last white keyboard was 10 years old and had not started to discolor at all. Not to say they wouldn't do so under certain circumstances, such as being left by a window where the sun shines on it every day, but they will discolor much less than computer cases and monitor cases.

Here's another view.  The Leopold (top left) is a kind of grayish off white.  The Filco (top right) is more of a tanish off white.  By comparison, the keys on the black keyboard are snow white.  The background is a sheet of pure white printer paper.  Sorry for the poor lighting.

If you want a white keyboard, have a look at Noppoo Choc mini. It looks white to me.

My Choc Mini is as white as the driven snow (almost).  I think the keys are made of POM plasitc and are just the slightest shade off white.  I can only tell because the South Park keys on it are pure white.

I have KBC PBT keycaps for both my Filco TKL and my Poker - both are snow white - love them.  I use the white keycaps in combination with the black cases and my keyboards look like they are dressed up in tuxedos.  I'm a G-Ma and not a dude so it's okay for me to describe my keyboards in tuxedos.....

G-ma, is that supposed to be girly-man, or grand-mother.

And I never understood the fascination with snow white coloring, UV damage will turn it yellowish eventually, why deal with that.. Black all the way..
