Title: Suggestions for Good rubber domes that are available for purchase?
Post by: vipjun on Fri, 02 March 2012, 09:28:15
I've used the deal extreme apple copy kb for about 4 months now, and the keys are starting to not register.

I'm on the hunt for another rubber dome, not topre.  I need the key to actuate and deactuate  quickly so the ones that activate in the middle cause me trouble because the length of time the key is actuated is slightly longer (boo for gaming).

Can anyone make some recommendations? here are the details i'm looking for.

1- Key deactuation point occurs once key is lifted not 2mm later
2- Need keys (asdf l; ralt spacebar) to be 4kRO
3- Corded , not wireless ps2 preferable.
4- less travel is better
5- Is not a hard to find / no discontinued 1980's keyboard that are mostly used.
6- Reasonably priced for a rubber dome - ~$35 for 20M keystrokes.

um, why not just get mechanical, they have 2mm activation/deactivation...And you can use the O ring mod ($10) to both dampen, AND reduce the total travel to total of 2.5-3.5mm, not to mention FULL NKRO

if you spend 35$ that works for 20M,  the $80-90 for a mechanical that'll do 50 million is well worth it. and equivalent in terms of keystroke to cost.

The cherry mx blue, cm storm is selling for 65$ shipped at NCIX, usa. that + the o-rings either from the group buy, or wasd keyboards. = $75 - $80 total

I don't like the feel of a mech /w o rings.  The feeling on my finger when a key bottoms out on a Mech is way worse than a rubber dome.

While i love Cherry blues for typing, They are not good for the games i play.

I'd really like to try those NMB with the individual rubber domes.

KeyTronic, NMB, AST, Dell QuietKey, BTC? KeyTronics can be had new, the others would be good New Old Stock. BTC makes a nice little MiniTouch-like keyboard with quality domes. HHKB or HHKB Lite might also suit you.

Best inexpensive domes I ever used was a Fujitsu-Seimens. I don't remember the model, but it had tactility, and almost Topre like in feel but a little 'rougher'. BTC5100 aren't too bad either. I used those for quite sometime before I discovered Cherry. Bonus on those is they have MX keycap compatible sliders so you could still customize it easily if you wished.

Best rubber dome widely available might be the Apple keyboard (the wired one with 10key). You can always change the key configs in Windows if you're not a mac user, and it looks better than 99% of keyboards on the market.
