Title: Cherry 'rare' keycaps
Post by: IvanIvanovich on Fri, 02 March 2012, 16:58:05
First, I know how uncommon some of these keys are, and how unlikely anyone that does have them will want to sell. I am willing to pay handsomely, but price still must be in the realm of sanity. As much as I want these keycaps I am not willing to bankrupt myself. Listed in order of desire...
1. Cherry white on black doubleshot TEXTLESS arrow only 2.75 right shift.
2. Cherry black on white doubleshot TEXTLESS arrow only 2.75 right shift.
3. Cherry black on white / light grey / beige doubleshot 1.25 ctrl keys, pair.
4. Cherry black on white R1 (top row) 0 (zero) without anything else on it, with upper left legend placement like letters.
5. Cherry keys in uncommon colors and/or uncommon legends but must be common sizes for their row (not interested in a R1 1.75 key for example as interesting as it may be, I want them to be usable on a modern keyboard), keys from other language layouts besides US, DE, IT. Mostly interested in doubleshots, but may be interested in others also.

Cherry ONLY, I am not at all interested in SP or others keycaps. If it's not obvious, I am looking for MX keys. I may be willing to do trades from my collection as well, depending.
Thanks.

1. easy to find since it's on every ISO cherry board (but do you have a textless left shift with just the arrow? that is the rare one.)
2. the last set i saw was the german one on ebay.de the keyboard sold for $160
3. 99.999999% sure it doesn't exist
4. haha, good luck. i've only ever seen 2 of them.
5. cool beans
6. these are off Desko keyboards and only came in black on RGB (i've been out of stock of these for awhile). there are also some doubleshot replicas that a Korean collector commissioned from Cherry but i've never seen them for sale ever.
7. as far as I know these were only ever produced on the G80-1800 winkeyless (so they are a flatter profile like row 2). sixty found a prototype G80-3000 with them though.

good luck in your search ;)

Yes, I already have the 2.25 textless ANSI left shift... which is why I need the right one. Came on one of the 11900 I picked up NIB not too long ago. I prefer the icon only legends, but I've never seen an ANSI enter with no text from Cherry, but thats ok since caps lock gives it balance. LOL.

Thanks, I am sure I will need lots of luck.

Oh you are looking for white on black for the shift. I was thinking black on white.

Bini himself owns one :)  although I remember he said it's from a set of cherry clone caps?

Mine is a genuine cherry corp cap but it wasn't from a cherry keyboard (not Ncr).

The other one was from a NCR board, only half wrong :P

Yes, white on black 2.75 textless shift seems harder to find, though you are correct about it being most likely on a European set. I did have 1 person offer me one awhile ago, but wanted me to buy the entire white on black DE set to get it.
Removed black 1.5 modifiers from wishlist. No point in tracking them down if they are that rare since I am selling the board I would have put them on.

I can think of only one board that ever came with an ANSI textless left shift. Right shifts are 10x easier to find based solely on the fact that all ISO board have them.

I pulled my 2.25 textless shift off an APC branded 11900, that is now on it's way to someone, sans the keycaps. I can't remember the exact model number for certain, but I think it was G80-11903HRMUS.

I have that "0" key in doubleshot black. I have that whole numpad section in a baggie. This is a NIB G80-8200HPAUS-2 that I have.

The keys that are gone are the only ones that have been sold.

I actually meant to say black on white. Only know of one board with a textless left shift in black on white.

Oh that is the key he wants. I was thinking R4, haha. Makes a lot more sense.

Oh, I have a white R1 0 in 2 unit, I want a single unit 0 to use on the numrow. I just got the older winkeyless version of that board G80-3190HDU, in white. The entire numpads on these are R1, not sculpted. It's 'possible' someone commissioned one of these with a 0 and 00 key or something, but unlikely. I can dream.

Wrong row? What other row is the "0" key on? I have never seen the "0" key in another row except the spacebar row.

Ohhh... Do you mean the "Backspace" row with the "`~", "1!", "2@" etc...?

Yes, I do:
R1
R2
R3
R4
top down, but those are still R1 profile. You could put that 0 on backspace, and it's perfect fit, correct profile. I put the numpad on my numrow, and I think it looks very good. Just not keen on 0 for the backspace.

It probably doesn't but that won't stop me wanting it. Maybe a Cherry blank white R1 key. That might not exist either... but nothing is same as zero, would work for me. I am using the . for 0 at the moment. Not quite as good, but it is ok for now.

Caps Lock I want.

It's brand spanking new too. It cost me one of these sub $100 monstrosities to get this second un-stepped center-stemmed capslock. The bottom 2 pictures are of the capslock on that 8200. I would have to be offered a lot to part ways with it. I have already turned down $20 + shipping.

I don't plan on murdering my second rare NIB doubleshot un-stepped capslock (as of this time). And why would I trade a rare NIB doubleshot un-stepped capslock for stepped ones that I already have too many of?

As far as I know I am the first person to do this keycap cruelty.

1. Take a NIB doubleshot ISO "|\" key and murder it for a stem.
2. Take a rare NIB doubleshot un-stepped capslock and murder the stem out of it.
3. Epoxy the murdered "|\" key shaft into the capslock - left justified.
4. Put it onto my G80-3494LYCUS-2.
5. Take pictures to confirm the kill.
6. Post them to horrify people on GH.
7. Wait for the horrified responses and cries for justice to pour in.

Damn that capslock is sexy...

R4 = F keys, ~1234/Backspace. You should go by what everyone else goes by...bottom up, so people don't get confused.

A numpad zero will "fit" where backspace is but it won't be the right profile since it will be angled the wrong way.

No, there is not 'everyone' Cherry numbers it this way 1234 top to bottom (using roman numerals... some of my sets have them in the bottom of the key), so does SP, and I think Leopold. KBC / WASD does it in reverse 4321 top to bottom. They are newer companies, so I will consider them incorrect.
The particular 0 I was talking about is top row profile, so there is no wrong angle. It is not a normal sculpted numpad, It's all top row which is why it looks awesome as my number row asides from the 'missing' 0 since I don't want it as a backspace.

That "Break" key interests me. Is it vintage cherry? My "0" key is the normal profile for the spacebar row. Yours is... wierd... Why would cherry make it "Backspace" profile?

I just looked at that picture again and noticed that the keys are 4 different shades...
Title: Cherry 'rare' keycaps
Post by: IvanIvanovich on Sat, 03 March 2012, 02:10:51
Yes, VERY vintage that break key came off a G80-499 that is XT. And you have a keen eye, yes those alphas are what I am calling my coffee and cream set (dark brown legends), light grey/beige modifiers and black on white numbers. That break key 'white' is also a little creamier than more recent white keys and the rest of the non-alphas on the 499 are that color too while the alphas are all grey like the modifiers on later boards, or backwards.

Cherry is very mysterious in their logic. I gave up on understanding some time ago. Old stuff can be potentially SUPER weird. Like why did they make the tab key 2.25 and the shift 1.75 on my 499?

I didn't know the 3190 had a numberpad like that. I don't understand the reasoning behind that. I've never seen a 1 unit zero like that before though. Worst case you could use an O but the profile would be a little bit off. Might look better than a regular zero though.

I had no idea either until it turned up today. Hard to see in photos if you aren't looking very close, only that there are no home, page, arrows, etc on them. It is odd but since numpad is surrounded by R1 relegendables it makes sense in a Cherry way.

Somebody just bought that board since I posted it it seems. I think that was the last one on ebay too. It's been a year so squarebox may not even have that board anymore. But it can't hurt to ask him I guess. I've never seen that board in black. They may have only made it in white. Ask him for the "00" key as well. Better to have it and not need it than regret not having it in the future right?
