Title: Few Questions About Filco Tenkeyless
Post by: MyNameIsFinn on Mon, 05 March 2012, 19:40:42
I live in the U.S. and am interested in a Filco Tenkeyless White with Cherry MX Browns

I was wondering where to get this, I don't want to buy from a less than reputable site.

Also what would you rate it?

There isnt much feedback for filcos on Amazon, but you can look through the wiki for reviews on Filcos. You're on geekhack, welcome to Filco fanboism :D

Filco 10/10

Really though, price/quality ration its probably the best for many reasons. It's what most people will consider "ideal", nothing seriously wrong with other options but Filcos have basically become the benchmark for all others here.

You could buy it used in classified here (anywhere from $20-$40 discount on average), wait for Keyboardco restock on Amazon, or buy from PCHome. All good options.

They are excellent. Amazon is one of if not the only US retailer for filcos. They are actually sold by the keyboardco through amazon. Its amazon, if you don't like it you can easily return it.

I refuse to admit how many Filcos I have bought from amazon in the last three month. :-o
There may be a good reason they keep getting low on stock.

I do not really like MX Browns. Blues FTW!

I love my filco mj1 w/ MX browns, but after using my CM quickfire w/ MX blues, I find that I like the blues much better. I wish I initially bought a filco MX blue instead of a brown. Oh well, having two keyboards to play around with is nice though.

Yeah, I returned two Filcos to Amazon and they didn't charge me anything.

One of them had a sticky spacebar that I couldn't fix and the other I ordered the wrong switch. Nothing seriously wrong with them but they were great about it. I was surprised they didn't even charge me for sending back the one with the wrong switch - free return after I called them.

I already have a Das With Blues, can you try to explain what browns are like.

Someone famous once said, "Noone ever got fired for buying a Filco.".  ...I think.  ;-)

Don't worry about buyer feedback on Amazon for Filcos.  Buy a Filco with MX Browns and you will be spoiled.  Why do you think I have so many Filcos with MX Browns.  They are the Farrari of keyboards, IMHO.  There are other good keyboards, but as far as I'm concerned there aren't any better keyboards.

I use my Realforce and HHKB keyboards with Topre switches mostly to justify the expence, but when I use one of my computers with a Filco with Browns I realize I'm using the HHKB because it's a $300.00 keyboard not because it's that much superior to a keyboard with Cherry MX (especially browns) switches.  Well, the Topre's do feel damn nice (can I say "damn"?), but so do Filco's.  Do try something with MX Reds, though.  Some people don't like reds as well and others do.  I love reds.

If you see a Filco TKL with Browns for sale for under $125.00 buy it.  But, you better be fast because if I see it first you'll miss it.  ;-)

If you can't find one used here on HG.  Go ahead and get one on Amazon.  A bit pricy ~$159.00 but you will NOT regret buying it.

To me, the blues are slightly more tactile and feel a bit smoother to type on as well. The main attraction is the clickiness that makes typing on the blues so much fun.

Take a look at this thread for a little bit more info:

My first mechanical keyboard was a DAS with Blues.  That keyboard is what got me hooked.  I don't dislike any of the switches.  I even like to type on the Leopold with MX Clears just to give my fingers a "workout" because the clears are pretty stiff.

Yes the Filco TKL is pricey at 159 and I had the same feelings paying that much but I do not regret a SINGLE dollar spent on my TLK Ninja with Browns. It feels even nicer now that the keyboard is broken in.

Bought it from Amazon with their free 2-day shipping(not sure if that's available anymore, but nevertheless they're promt)

P.S. Does anyone know of a carrying/transportation case for the TKL Filco, preferably something that can fit into a laptop bag?

Blues are light, clicky, and the tactile "bump" seems the greatest of all the MX switches (the new whites may be comparable). Browns claim to have a "bump", but at full speed (~90wpm) I don't notice it. If I type very slowly and deliberately, I can just barely make out the bump. One thing that I do prefer about the browns is that they feel more solid. The Blues feel kind of off balance or something. It's not enough to write home about, but if they could make the Blues feel as solid as the Browns, without losing the good "bump", I thnk we'd have almost the ultimate key switch. I'm looking into Buckling Spring though. I may have to drop my MX rating if BS is as nice as I suspect.

Your not going to get a filco with reds. They are very rare and hard to get. CM Storm Quickfire red version is like a filco clone (almost). It can be had at the CMstore for $90 + shipping.

I like reds for gaming. But not so much for typing.
Filco TKLs with MX Blacks are available on amazon. You could switch out the springs and have ghetto reds!  I can't tell much difference between reds and blacks though.

I actually prefer reds for typing, and browns for gaming. There's just something about gliding across the board when rolling wordy emails and such.

Well what I was thinking is perhaps a laptop bag that would have a compartment for the TKL, that way I am not carrying two separate bags. Hmm...

Ha. I've had comments galore on my bag at work. Mixed feedback :p but I could care less. It is small enough that it could fit in a backpack. Maybe that's an option.

I've heard some stuff that there is not that much difference between the filco browns and reds... I'm interested in getting the reds, wondering if it would be a waste to wait till they came out with something new rather than buying one now with browns.

Some (above in this thread) feel that tactile bump with browns is weak and prefer blues etc, but for me, the bump is very noticeable and I hardly bottom out on them other than some modifiers..

I also tried out some red switches at a local store and found them to be REALLY different from brown switches. The linear feel is so distinct when typing imo.

So I'll say just get one with browns now because  you won't really know if you like (or dislike) the switch without trying. Might as well just get the one that is available now and try it out then either keep it or sell it if you don't like it.

I wouldn't hold my breath for "something new".  There's already a ton of Cherry choices out there and 99.9% of keyboard users don't have a clue what a Cherry switch is.

The tactile bump in browns in a funny thing, IMO.  I would agree with the assessment by many that it seems to be non-existant.  Pressing and releasing a single key you really can't feel it - just a bit of grittiness.  If you use your four fingers and slowly press and release a group of keys, however, it's quite apparent.

What I find really interesting is that despite a single key bump feeling non-existant, there's a huge difference in feel when typing compared to a linear board.  In my case I notice that if you just fool around and tap a couple of keys blacks and browns don't feel all that different.  Type a sentence, however, and it's like night and day (and I don't mean just the spring weight).  The brown bump may not be registered as a tactile "pop" (like on BS or Topre boards - especially 55g ones) but muscle memory definitely registers the brown's tactility when typing at speed.

When typing on a Topre 55g, a crisp keytronic or a scissor switch board, I'll be thinking to myself how tactile and poppy the switch is.  Not so with browns - but it works...  A lot of people consider browns a "starter switch".  I think there may be a little more brilliance in there on the part of the Cherry designers than we give them credit for.

I have yet to try clears, but I'm trying to move toward lighter switches, not heavier, so it might be a waste of time/money.

Hmm.. I'd really like to just try them all out, that would make my life a lot easier lol. I love the blues right now but would like to try something new in the future. A friend of mine got a das with browns and he hated it, unfortunately he lived too far for me to go to just try out his keyboard. He now switched with a red switch keyboard and loves it. It's difficult to take all these opinions though and find ones that might best suit your style, because I've heard "blacks are too stiff for typing" to "blacks are fine for typing"... I can't see getting too worn out from typing, but like I said It's difficult to draw a conclusion with all these different opinions.

I asked The Keyboard Company about the Filco Reds a week ago, if you decide to wait it will probably take a couple of months.

I can't wait for the reds to arrive, i will probably order both blues and reds when they have them in stock.

I bought a Filco Tenkeyless with brown switches 5 months ago and promised myself that i wouldn't buy another keyboard for years to come since it was so expensive and durable. I thought that my obsession over keyboards would fade away if i just bought myself one Filco with cherry browns, the ultimate middle ground.

Now i hope that my keyboard-mania will be cured once i have blues and reds in my possession, but i fear that it may have the opposite effect. Like throwing gasoline on fire.
The browns would be an excellent choice while you wait for the reds, browns are great. But keyboards are like Pokémon - you gotta catch ém all.

I still don't like the name "tenkeyless", since it's really seventeen-key-less.  (number pad has 17 keys, not 10.)  So why not "seventeenkeyless"?  Or "SKL"?  Or even 17KL?  is that so hard?  We need to have language police for English like the French do with the Academie Francaise, to put an end to this nonsense.  Rick Santorum would clean this up straight away.  Wait, he thinks educated people are snobs, so maybe he wouldn't.  That fat guy from GA might though, he's a fascist.  The Rich guy from MA, would only do it if he can make a buck off it.

Well, there are 10 number keys (0 to 9), which is the central point of a tenkey thing, the rest is free.

You also say numpad, which means only with numbers on it, whereas you also have other keys on it.

Makes sense somehow, you can't rely on the number of key the manufacturer put aside of those 10 keys.

I have a review on Amazon for the TKL (with video) and the same review here. It was a great board. The main reason I got rid of it was to try reds and because I was over the TKL and wanted my Ten-key back.

It's a great board.
