Title: Dell U2711
Post by: BobbyUK on Thu, 08 March 2012, 08:46:21
Hi, need some advice on this monitor to see if it's worth the investment.  Been looking for a IPS panel 27" and the price seems right £450-£516.
Main use will be gaming/photo editing and video editing.

Thanks

While I love my 2408wfp and 2407wfp.... You might wait for more reviews of this (http://geekhack.org/showthread.php?28198-400-IPS-2560x1440-Monitor-Glossy-No-AG-Coating)

Also depends on how important uniformity is.  If you're looking for production quality photo/video then I wouldn't even go with Dell...  there are other brands truly aimed at pros.

You'll pay a lot more for them though, being that gaming was listed as the first point I'd say its safe to assume there wont be any production level editing going on in which case the Dell's are hard to fault.  I'm using the big bro U3011, primarily for FPS gaming with a fair bit of photo work aswell and it's been nothing short of amazing.  One thing that irritates a lot of people with these screens though, especially the 27" model, is that the anti glare coating is quite aggressive, I don't find it a problem personally, but it may be worth checking one out in person before you buy if possible.

Which is why that LG panel on ebay was my first suggestion  :)

2711 is pretty good, but there is a new wave of LED panels coming out that will be cheaper.

Hmmm might as wait then, noticed Asus came out with a 27" IPS model but won't be available in UK any time soon.....

I have two smaller version of the same panels (U2410s). Have had them for a couple years and absolutely love them.

If your going to spend the big bucks for a 27" ips screen just get a 30" (zr30w is the best gaming one atm due to not having a scaler,  some people dont like the AG I dont mind it though),  otherwise get one of the cheaper Korean versions out right now.  Thread was linked earlier.

You can also consider taking a little bit of a risk and getting an Achieva Shimian particularly the Yamakasi Q270 Catleap version. 2560x1440P at 85-100Hz (http://geekhack.org/showthread.php?28198-400-IPS-2560x1440-Monitor-Glossy-No-AG-Coating) though it depends on the card; with a price of 350-450 area depending on the seller. There's also a few other forums around the internet with a thread on this monitor. There seems to be some interesting monitors out in Asia not just affordable but with many features.
