Title: Which switch is this?
Post by: 1391406 on Tue, 13 March 2012, 14:10:09
I just received the FK-2001 I ordered and was wondering if anyone would be so kind as to identify which switch this is, if possible?

I was hoping there wasn't an off-chance it was Simplified Type IV but rather Complicated.

The non-Windows key FK2001s are supposed to have complicated white ALPS. Check the wiki for more info and a guide to opening white ALPS switches.

I think its complicated, in more ways than one. Opening it would be the best choice though but be very careful when putting it back together to get everything lined up correct.

ALPS is like a box of chocolates.

If you start mashing them they'll turn into a gooey mess?

Lol.

You REALLY have to open it up to tell.

ALPS is like a box of chocolates.

Have you been watching Forest Gump recently?

but fair enough I can't argue with you I just thought the question wasn't defined enough so I gave the most obvious answer, always the wrong thing to do!

I'm uncertain about your wikis as well.

This why I won't vote in your poll.  You are better off in the box.

Looking through the ALPS switch wiki (http://geekhack.org/showwiki.php?title=ALPS+switches) – indeed complicated and type I simplified look identical from the outside. Can't tell with type IV as there isn't a clear photo. Type II (XM) are obviously different in shape, and those are the rubbish ones that you want to avoid.

I seem to recall reading that opening up complicated ALPS is a bad thing as they're much harder to reassemble, so make sure you choose a worthless switch like scroll lock to inspect.

I don't think that any stigma should be attached to simplified ALPS in general – after all, they're our best hope of getting new and exciting boards produced, such as HHKB ALPS ... Oh look, a pig, up there in the sky ...

I set my Tactile Pro 3 up on my desk again earlier and after spending quality time with an Acer 6312, I was surprised how light and smooth the Type I switches were on the Tactile Pro 3. The tinny, pingy sound of Type I simplifieds is what bothers me more – but that may be more to do with the way Matias build keyboards, as I don't have a FILCO Zero Fukka for comparison (I would LOVE a Fukka FILCO Zero 105, do you hear me Diatec??)

XM switches are the hated ones, as they're so stiff and difficult to type on, and you won't have those.

Anyway Quantum mechanics is all about statistics and THIS is statistically significant results.

Statistics and quantum mechanics are funny that way.  The outcome often defies logic.

With respect to your poll, I would feel more inclined to reply if it didn't deal in such absolutes.  If it asked something along the lines of, "is Ripster, overall, a knowledgeable resource in the area of mechanical keyboards despite his penchant for posting such," I would be more inclined to respond.

I don't expect you to like this post, since it was written on my DROID Razr MAXX using Tapatalk.
