Title: ripster isn't infallible after all.............
Post by: silat on Fri, 23 March 2012, 14:08:06: Well I received my Ducky pink/purple Shining and what a piece of junk it is. I cannot believe I listened to those that like Ducky.
Ripster and the other Ducky Stalker Club members were absolutely correct about this piece of crap........................................

Just kidding. :) ripsters hate of all things Ducky is wrong headed.

This is day 13 with it and so far so good. It seems to be solidly made and everything works as it should. The legs on the board are fine. So I guess those who were complaining had an earlier model that was not as robust. Also the light bleeding thru the backs of the key caps seems to not be affecting my key caps. At the highest setting the lights are very very bright:)
I think the keys are a bit smaller than my Deck keys but I am not positive of that. I will measure later. The purple/pink lights are really bringing out my feminine side and these hi heels are killing my feet but it is nothing a good soak won't cure. LOL It was sold as purple leds but they are close to pink. I am not complaining. It looks great.

These browns are definitely much lighter than the Deck clears are. I do not think I am going to be one of those who has to use a certain switch as I do not type a lot other than to respond to emails and post in forums. I do like the clears but I can already tell that I will like the browns too. I have a Deck 82 coming and it has blacks and I am sure it will be fine also.
I may be suffering from Deck love but emotionally I think the Deck is a step up from the Ducky. The Deck keycaps will outlast the Ducky caps because of the way they are made (check rips wiki). Also the actual shell on the Deck is more "robust" for lack of a better description. Now that does not mean that the Ducky is not to my liking. I actually like it very much. I am a bit heavy handed when typing so Deck clears are just my style and I do not find them to be too heavy at all.
As I wrote previously the browns are most assuredly lighter than the clears but not by all that much. Maybe if I was typing all day I would have a different opinion. But I am retired and surf, post on forums, play Aces High (hitechcreations.com) and read my email. So I am not typing for hours at a sitting.

So far the only things that I would like different are:
1. Some of the leds stay brighter than the rest as Ducky wanted. Num lock and the calc button (shortcut key) in the upper right.
2. The calc button (shortcut key) led stays on all the time.
3. I disabled the windows keys as my right outside palm keeps hitting it as I am typing. Lazy palm syndrome I guess. Or it needs to placed somewhere else:)
4. The last 3 keys (shortcut keys) on the upper right of the board do not have leds under them. Not sure why they did that. You must use Fn to make the shortcut key of your choice come on. The others remain off. I think this is wrong but it is not a deal breaker.
5. Primary symbols are on top of the secondary symbols. Not a deal breaker but odd.
6. Unlike the Deck the Ducky does not remember your light settings. You must reset every time you turn on the computer. This definitely should be changed. Also not a deal breaker unless you are OCD :)

I have decided to use each keyboard I have in a weekly rotation.

Why the hate on Filco?

There are many keyboard that have better QC than Ducky.
Just to name some, Rosewill, CM RapidFire and WASD keyboards.

ripster I posted again because I thought my original post was deleted. I couldnt find it using search.
So if you want to get one of these posts deleted please have at it as I wouldnt want to offend you again as I think buying a Shining probably did the trick.

I found my original post. Should it be in the review part of the forum? If so move it. But this thread right here is great too. Move whichever one you want. I do not know how..

The LEDs on the 4 top-right keys is an indicator of repeat speed. Calc is x1. Press Fn + any of those four buttons to change it up to x4 repeat rate (and to also change which one is lit up).

From reading here I figured that I wanted a Filco, but the last couple months haven't seen anything in the way of availability for brown-switch Filcos in the configuration I wanted. Sick of waiting, I bought the Ducky. Having never used a modern mech keyboard, I was very impressed by the build quality and extremely happy with the new keyboard.

Then a the Filco model I was after showed up on eBay for a good price so I figured I'd buy it ($107 new, shipped). And as much as I loved the Ducky, it didn't hold a candle to the Filco. It's hard to describe without working with both, but the Filco just feels right. The stabilizers are a huge portion of it, but it's not just that.

The Ducky is a great board, but the Filco is playing in a different league.

My wife now has a 2 week old Ducky on her desk which replaced some ancient Microsoft membrane keyboard, and I doubt she has even paid any notice to it.

I am not and have never claimed Ducky is perfect. But the hypocrisy when it comes to the beloved Filco is large. If you cannot admit that then well you are choosing to ignore the obvious.

None the less I will probably buy a Filco and other keyboards that Filco fanbois will criticize:)

The key offset of the MJ2TKL is annoying when trying to change keys, but not really a big deal. It looks good, and most importantly, feels good. Sure, it lacks backlighting, but so what? I have lights in my room; Hell, I can see my keyboard in the dark from the glow of my screens, and besides, I don't need to look at the board when I'm typing, so again, what's the big deal?

Now, back on topic: when has Brother ripster staked his infallibility, and been proven wrong? I have only staked my infallibility a few times, but when I have I have never been proven wrong. Therefore, I still have my infallibility. My guess is that ripster does as well. ;-)

Had both a Ducky TKL and Filco, and while it's obvious the build quality is better with the filco when you pick it up etc, when you actually use it, I found very little difference (both with blues) and I've in fact sold my Filco but kept the Ducky since I could get more for the Filco, and I would have been happy keeping either.

Since my rubberdome days, I never found my self able to spend more on other rubberdome keyboard when they are pretty much of the same quality whereas in the mechanical keyboard market, the quality varies so greatly.

It's like buying a Mitsubishi or Honda car, naturally I would pick the Honda without a doubt even if I'm paying more. Refinement is worth paying more as you will learn when you grow older.

which appears to be you *answering* questions. (BTW, with iOS5 the Camera Connection Kit ceases to allow keyboards to be connected. I just wasted a trip, the other day, to Apple Store to get one. Luckily, I tried it in the store, and then googled the "not enough power" error message, to discover that Apple's Procrustean ways are still in full effect - they reprogrammed the firmware to limit power to the port to 20mA, instead of the previously allowed 100mA.)

What do you want to know?

Maybe I just didn't try hard enough. :-P I was sure that after I clicked OK to "not enough power" that the Camera Connection Kit had turned itself off, and the keyboard wasn't working. I admit, I only tried it with an AEK in the store, as I don't carry my Filco everywhere I go.

Anyhow. While I do like my Filcos, there are things that could be improved. It is like the fastest 3 legged dog. Sure it is better put together than a Ducky or Leopold, but they're not without it's problems. Then again, I hope no one is looking for perfection in a mass produced item from an assembly line. Fool's errand.
