why are the number position on a keyboard's numpad opposite to the number positions on phones?

On numpad, 1 2 3 are on the bottom however 123 are on the top on the phone.

Numpads on keyboards were inherited from adding machines layout going back to the 1880's at least. Telephone keypad was arranged that way due to the row / column frequency combinations the DTMF system was set up for.
