Title: What do your coworkers think of your keyboard?
Post by: codersean on Tue, 27 March 2012, 22:16:36: Yesterday I replaced my work keyboard, Unicomp Customizer, with my new Filco MJ2 TKL with MX Browns.

Today a coworker came over to my cube and said, "I like your new keyboard, it is much quieter."

I didn't think my customizer was that loud!

Anyone have any good stories?

They think the Filco brown is nice to type and the Ninja red keycaps are cool, "it must cost around 40USD at most".

I never try to tell them the right price.

In fact, he was the reason I dug mine out of my parents basement (I bought it back in'94). Since then, I've had more than a few nasty comments and one anonymous note about the noise. A few years ago I grease modded it and I haven't had any complaints since.

Since coming here, I've brought a few keyboards in and out of work. I've been using a Cherry G80 with ergo-clears with my laptop lately. Most people know I am weird, so it's no biggie.

However, I did need to get engraved PBT keycaps and some O-Rings to tune down the sound when bottoming out during StarCraft II sessions. Wife thinks it's acceptable now, so that base is covered.

What's even better: no one in my household except my wife and I (we're currently living with her parents) can use my keyboard since we're the only ones who can touch type. The engraving isn't deep enough to see the letters when typing, so they don't even bother trying. Gotta love that. :)

First I was not sure how the reactions of my co-workers will be when I bring my own keyboard.
Then I've brought my G80-3000 with Clears with me (which obviously isn't extraordinary at all) and no one even noticed it... lol

This is quite hilarious. At school, people hated my blues. So I dont bring it anymore.

Do we have people here that bring topre boards to school/work ? i'm planning on getting a 87u, and I was wondering, does anyone have the balls to bring it to school.

I don't have a lot of rainbow keycaps mods going on or anything, but I can't understand how people who type all day can't appreciate that some tools are better than others.

Anyways.... the only keyboard that really generated comments was my model M. There were some comments about noise (despite me being somewhat isolated and in an office). There were the comments about the lame retro keyboard from the 80s from people who thought I should get something "decent" like a Logitech multimedia rubber dome board if I was going to bother to buy my own keyboard. There were also some comments of praise from those who didn't notice it at first but clued in to the model M on my desk. "Those are the last of the great keyboards! They were over $300 in their day! They don't build them like that anymore" etc....

Right now I have an 86U on my desk - no one has noticed (other than perhaps a reduction in the noise). I've had a Leopold TKL there - no notice. I've had a weirdo server-room space saving board with ALPS - no notice. Of course I guess there's nothing wrong with flying under the radar.

I guess I'd get some looks/questions if I took the Blue one day, or the Race for that matter. Nearly everyone uses the office's Lenovo keyboards, apart from a few Logitech users, but all are rubber domes. Might have to share some knowledge about mechanicals in the future..

Now she knows I have a different kind of keyboard but no idea what a mechanical one is. So she goes in looks through 50 boxes of Lenovo rubber dome keyboards testing them out even though they are all the same lol.

Sent her a link of a Pink Filco and showed her a video clip of someone typing on blues and now she has been begging my boss to get her one

I guess I lucked out though, when I brought in my Poker with Blues, nobody has complained about the sound. I've only received comments when I forgot to mute a conference call from a co-worker that likes to give me crap about my obsession with keyboards.

Thanks to me though, I have one friend at work that has purchased a mechanical keyboard and two friends that will be ordering soon. I'm glad to help the community grow.

He tried my filco with browns and loved it, then i replaced with an RF87u and he didn't like it as much, and ended up buying a rosewill with browns and bought a set of white pbt caps off me. He's not yet to the point that he's ready to spend more money, but he DID complain about having to actually type on his laptop on the business trip he was just on. poker inbound?

Bought 2 DAS kb's with blues and blank keys and that did get some attention, mostly because of the blank key caps (I have my own office so sound is no issue).

My manager came in while I was unboxing and asked me what it cost me, and then forced me to declare them as a business expense :) .

Showed someone in my team the HHKB/Poker (haven't decided yet which) form factor I'm getting next and was declared insane. Although the only other guy in my team did take a magic marker to his Dell kb to blank out the keys, he only lasted a day though :) .

And one of my coworkers still types on an original clicky IBM keyboard (he was quite excited to hear that Unicomp still makes clicky keyboards, BTW, in case he needs to replace it), so I have no fear that their keyboard barbarism will make me take my keyboard out of the office. :)

In fact, let me just go on a bit. When you use a mushy but silent keyboard, you just accept the lack of feedback. When you actually have a keyboard that tells your fingers what you are typing -- well, let's just say it's the difference between eating Styrofoam and popcorn. When I have to use a rubber dome keyboard, it feels like I'm typing in Jell-O.

Then I remembered that one of my co-workers who needs my station every now and then does the two finger type method while looking at the keyboard and he'd be screwed if i brought the das ultimate in. I never even had a chance to get dirty looks for using my blue board.

"Ergo-clears" come really close, though, and are quieter than even a grease-modded or floss-modded Model M. Not a bad compromise, at least IMO. On the other hand it's fun to type on reds sometimes, just to mix things up now and then.

Blues most ppl (read team mates) didnt like it.. too noisy.. especially compared to an HP rubberdome.. or scissor key.

Browns got a few comments, especially the camo with jollys :D all good ones :)

Reds tend to freak ppl out, purely because it's otaku :)

Was great fun watching my team mate struggle with the most basic of tasks with it.. Haha.. Im like " Stop looking down, its not going to help...Just watch the screen and adjust"

But no one has ever said anything about the Reds sound (leo). especially if you dont bottom out.

I just love bottoming out on my browns :D too much fun :)

I'm a Quality manager/Office manager in logistics, hardly glamorous or an excuse to buy those keyboards. Still, my boss and I get along pretty well and he knows that I normally don't declare my expenses (not because I dont want to, but I always forget :) ), so he probably thought he'd make it up to me like this.

Oh and I did not register for this post, have been lurking here for ages and decided to register sometime last week. Had a few beers yesterday and this seemed as good as any a place to make a first post. Apparently I also bought a Model M keyboard :)

I let her use it something like every other day with the Rosewill with Reds on off days, since I like to switch things up. Another woman I sit 2 down from has offered to buy the Rosewill used off of me if I ever consider selling it; I keep linking her to Newegg deals, but I don't think she wants to pay the mech keyboard premium.

Blues haven't gotten me any complaints yet since the woman I sit next to really doesn't care how much noise I make; even the Unicomp Customizer I've been using has been well-received. It's odd since we're in a pretty quiet office, too.

Can't wait to see what a Poker/Pure will elicit.

But its not strange considering my class is filled with geeks, and blank keyboards are definetly not the weirdest thing they saw people bring to school..

my Girlfriend was annoyed by the blues at first, but right now she got used to it.

When I tell them the price, they're pretty shocked. I've mentioned it was "mechanical" but nobody really understands or cares - they just like the LEDs.

Then I realize how much I hated my old G11.

Damn, that's pretty solid, especially the rent/parking subsidy. The Verizon plan isn't too shabby, either.

I've also found that the real appreciation of good mech boards takes place when you're forced to go back. Even people who didn't think much of a mech board when trying it grew to appreciate it when they had to go back.

I prefer just beating people relentlessly until they agree with me that mechanical keyboards are far superior to the trash they have on their desk...

or I just let them use the trash on their desks unless they happen to ask about my keyboards.

I'm using a DasKeyboard with MX Blues. The guy next to me is trading off between a Unicomp and one with Cherry MX switche. The other guy has an old IBM Model M from 1991. Our new guy tested out the Unicomp and won't give it back, so he'll be buying his own shortly.

Most people on other shifts think we are crazy for spending what we did on the keyboards, but still think they're awesome and try to play with them.

But my friends that know I have the BWU and am ordering another mech soon think it's stupid.
They say the keyboards with different keycaps look stupid, and I'm paying way too much money for something that doesn't feel better (apparently low-profile keys have a "click" and are therefore as good as mech)

They also think it's even more ridiculous that I'm ordering another keyboard. To them it must just be a necessity, whereas to me it's about comfort and enjoyment.

ah right. I've had the problem of pressing the caps lock key a few times in SC2, but don't really play it enough any more to justify changing my keyboard for it.

I wish I were as perfect as you. Also, when I go to tournaments, I'd be banned if I tried AHK. This is just a really easy way to get around that. Removing the keycap lowers the chances of me accidentally hitting the wrong key, which could cost me a game. I haven't accidentally hit a switch yet :P

EDIT: Just realized I explain this to more people online then in irl situations :D

LOL I agree. Win7 keyboard shortcuts for quicklaunch are gone. Win+1-9 switch to tabs instead of launching quicklaunch bar links and there is no way to remap them natively in windows. -___-

Keyboard:
Black Cherry G80-3000 with MX blue switches. I've got a red Esc key, purple arrow keys and I've replaced the alphabet keys with Cherry black on white DS keys. I'll be replacing with mods with the black on RGBY set when they come through.

Post by: Surly73 on Sat, 07 April 2012, 16:12:25: Well, after getting tired of seeing my boss using a RD IBM/Lenovo board that came with his work computer 3 or 4 computers ago that's so badly worn there are divets in his space bar and enter key, I loaned him a Leopold w/ browns for a while. He called it more "sensitive" than the RD board. After a week or so he really settled into it and pictured having a really hard time going back.

On Thursday I swapped my Leo for my Realfoce 86U variable. More than a year ago I had a RF 103UB 55g and I left him try it briefly and he was completely nonplussed. A total "meh" reaction - "It's not bad, but I like...blah blah Logitech..blah blah media keys blah blah brushed aluminum.. blah blah to match my stereo".

After 15 minutes with the Realforce he specifically came to see me to tell me how much he loved it. He tells me I can keep my "black keyboard" (the Leo) as long as I want now that he has the RF. Apparently he's instantly clicking with the RF touch. He says "it's like I'm driving a BMW with this one [86U] and the black one [Leo] was an Infiniti". He also said "This one costs even more doesn't it??? What are you doing to me!?". I told him the 86U was more like a Bentley. I haven't had the heart to bring up EK and show him how much an 87U would cost if he wanted to buy a new RF TKL board.

I forsee having to recover my 86U with much difficulty. At least when I loaned him the Leo he listened to me when I described that you need to give yourself at least a week to adapt to see how different switches work for you. I described all of the different Cherry MX options to him and he kind of glazed over. I let him try a WYSE board with Cherry blacks and he really didn't like it. Dead and mushy was his description.

I have a Filco w/ browns at home and I have to say that the Leo somehow feels different (and not as nice). I have a bad feeling for my wallet that I'm going to end up keeping a Realforce for the office. Of course then I'll be watching out for an "affordable" 10th anniversary edition. Sigh.

On a related note, I do receive some looks of concern when I can go to my filing cabinet and produce samples of Cherry brown, Cherry black, buckling spring, ALPS boards, dye sub, DS keys etc... whenever someone starts to talk about keyboards. I also had a dumpster set of WYSE DS caps soaking in a tupperware container with H2O2 in my office which resulted in a "WTF" from one or two people.

When I bothered tech support, most didn't know what I was talking about. One guy seemed to have something like a Unicomp.

Showed them pictures of the KBC poker, they were like: "How the hell are you supposed to use that?"
When I told them the price of a Deck Legend in Europe they were like WTF!? (I paid €240 for that one)
"No media buttons or anything?"

Let's see how they react when I actually show up with one.
