Title: keycap advises
Post by: vanatir on Wed, 28 March 2012, 01:35:42
i get my first mechanical keyboard (Qpad MK-50) like a week ago. Its a great feeling to type on it, but i realised that i can feel the letters on the keycaps. i see the keycaps a slowly fading out (like the "A" button). As i researched in the forum here that double shot keycaps could be a long term solution. Is there an option to get these kind of keycaps with german layout who fits my keyboard (affordable)? maybe some kind of group buy or something. Any suggestions are welcome.
or should o go with wasdkeyboard laser engraved keycaps?

thanks in  advance! :)

you could try a set of PBT engraved keycaps (these seem to be everywhere) or PBT dye-subs (can check with imsto if he still has those thick dye subs)
Both types are relatively quite durable from stock ones imo..

Not too knowledgable about doubleshots though..

Do not get engraved if you don't like feeling the legends. Doubleshots are your best bet, but dye sub are cheaper.

Hey welcome and congrats on your first mechanical!

Here are two options for doubleshots (some good basic infos about doubleshots (http://keyboardlover.com/keycaps.php#scrounge_header)):
- harvest them from an older keyboard via eBay or other auctions/reseller, a good example is always the Cherry G80-3000 H** (further explanation on keyboardlovers site, link above)
- join some groupbuys here on geekhack, Forum (http://geekhack.org/forumdisplay.php?70-group-buys), current huge groupbuy (ends soon, better be fast ^^) (http://geekhack.org/showthread.php?20485-Double-shot-replacements-ROUND-FOUR!-deadline-2012-03-31), novelty groupbuy which should open soon with very unique legends/symbols (http://geekhack.org/showthread.php?29132-IC-Diablo-Exocet-87-Extras-Double-Keyset)

Cherry would probably be the easiest and best option for DE doubleshots. You even have the advantage on that board of being able to use the 1.5 modifiers most common on Cherry boards. You will need to get the 1x windows and menu key from a 2nd source like an 11900 though.
