Title: What does your keyboard say about you?
Post by: Typey Toes on Tue, 10 April 2012, 06:00:23
Does a users keyboard of choice(s) reflect their lifestyle, beliefs and overall personal hygiene?

How many keyboards are too many and, how often do you rotate them?

Has it become a concern amongst family and friends?

Are the YouTube typing videos disturbing for most people?

We probably can assume that the people having expensive keyboards like to type on a nice keyboard.

People with HHKB are awesome. But that is obvious as well.

Perceptive, but does not address the tough love questions I asked.

I don't know about the whole keyboard, but my switch preference describes me accurately.

I'm ashamed of my blank keycaps. Yet I won't buy a keyboard that is any different.

You can figure out the rest.

OK, really old, pretty big, pretty bad, strong but gentle, good to work with if you are reasonable and logical and understand the positives and negatives of the situation.

Keyboard - Model F, 122-key terminal, manufactured during Reagan's first term, 22"x9"x3" (or, over half a meter x 1/4 of a meter x 8 cm with legs down), weighs about as much as each of my children did at birth, the most exquisitely satisfying keyboard experience of my life. (ps - I also own numerous other buckling springs, and have some nice Cherry blues, Monterey blues, and Alps whites and blacks carefully packed in the basement, but we are not talking about them.) Immaculately clean at all times, in perfect repair.

Me - MWM, born during Truman's second term, over 6' and over 220 lbs (1.85 m x 100 kg) (or 16 stone for you Brits), earned a black belt in Tae Kwon Do at 56, college-educated professional, natural-born teacher and good with children, but also passionate with a bit of a temper. Clean and likes my environment neat, but not always able to do everything I want.

What am I forgetting? Oh, beliefs. I am not a believer. If it ain't science, it's fiction. (I made that up years ago. Give me credit for it.)

I'm not a bad ass, but my keyboard is.

I am a teddy bear.

I bet that my keyboard would could defeat this test, although I probably could not.

All my keyboard says about me is that I'm a nerd for things that have little useful application with poor impulse control.

kinesis looks too weird to be ergonomic so i guess geeky/nerdy. (even tho no one is allowed on my computer and is pw protected, the keyboard alone is intimidation enough)

I primarily use Model M's.  Despite having acquired a few Cherry MX boards since coming here, I find I am happier with my buckling springs.  I guess that means I am stuck in the '80s.  This is further reinforced by my choice in transportation.  :)

A trackball is enough to keep people away from my computer.  I love it when they try to slide it around on my desk.

Blank keyboards + weird layout + linux with uncommon windows manager means: My computer is mine, don't touch it, you won't even be able to use it.

Finally purchased my first Model M, new (as can be). Awaiting delivery.
Not sure what the M says about me yet, suspect poor replacement for vintage sports cars...

Mine says "I'm a Noob with mechanical keyboards"

Seriously. Just a Leopold with a red escape key I got for free from EK. I'm hoping my Phantom will change that to "Overly obsessed keyboardist".

Blank keyboard = I don't need to look at the keyboard!
Adding some colored keycaps = Ok, maybe I need to look a little...

I'm hoping this kb will help me type faster / with less effort and be a useful tool to help me learn dvorak. It is also the ultimate place for expression on my desk, as it is the thing I use most frequently, and that which anyone coming in to my office would most likely notice. My keyboard might as well be an extension of me, so it makes sense to make it reflect my tastes.

Hmmm... I'm dressed head to toe in black without any logos or lettering, and so's my keyboard.

(http://www.archidose.org/Blog/book-black.jpg)

I sometimes get a bit grubby if I'm working somewhere dirty, or with rouge, but I always clean up - especially under my finger nails.

I can see myself having four or five keyboards, I'd say ten was too many and twenty+ is excessive.

I think my general nature and chaotic way of life tends to give people more than enough to be concerned about without worrying about keyboards.

I have no idea, haven't looked at any.

So you're saying my keyboards say I'm excessive? I agree with that. But pimps usually are, right?

Played Rugby and powerlifted in undergrad, so on the surface I look like a juiced jock but as soon as  I pull out my gadgets/keyboards people def pull a confused look.

Still learning but the the HHKB Pro2 is def representative of my true, sometimes hidden geek.

My work boards over the years:

* Ordinary 1391401
* 1391401 modded with white LEDs, red dyed caps, and a trim of fake suede fabric around a painted-black case.
* 122M
* Ducky 1008, blue, with cream-cheese-and-green caps.

MessageL  Pay attention to me, but not too much.  And feel free to find me very, very, strange.

My primary keyboards are Noppoo Choc Mini, blank TypeMatrix 2030, and dem thinkpads. All of them are *reasonably* minimalist, rather quiet, plain-looking, and more or less unusable for other people (due to Colemak, matrix layout on the TypeMatrix with blank keycaps, and trackpoint or trackball instead of a mouse/touchpad). I guess it says a lot about me.

To most people that see it at work it probably identifies me as an office space Milton type who is over concerned with trivial gadgets. However my 4360x1440 monitor setup likely stands out more in this regard at work compared with the provided 1280x1024 monitors.

mostly I just say  tippity tap tip tap, quietly because I'm Matias Quiet Pro.
Translated it means my owner is a hedonist that enjoys physical interaction and is respectful to the sensitivities of others.
I'm un-badged, not one of the crowd, my owner is secure enough to choose a varietal switch instead of running with the crowd.
He appreciates traditional values without being inflexible.
Women see me and don't understand.
Men see me and don''t understand.

unmm excuse me!!
I think my keyboard talks about me when I'm not around.
Sometimes I come back and the caps-lock is on..
once even the scroll lock was on!!!
I suspect cats were involved.

fortunately my keyboards' has a wry sense of humor, as you can tell by reading this.  I deny any involvement.
