Title: Sucky Ducky can go F***y itself.
Post by: FoxWolf1 on Sun, 15 April 2012, 10:30:19
RIP DK1008XM (Green): February 2012-April 2012. We barely knew ya.
Cause of death: Critical switch failure (sorry, I don't type accurately enough to live without backspace!), intermittent USB problems. Keycaps will probably wind up in the classifieds sometime when I get more time.
Buy one at your own peril. Even for something living near the center of the FoxWolf1 Mystical Disintegration Field (the invisible force that, over time, destroys any and all objects in close proximity to me), two months of life is very, very brief.

This message is being typed on a super-cheap used rubber dome keyboard that I picked up from a charity shop, because I have too much work to be keyboard-less, even for a day. I miss having a mechanical keyboard, but at least this one feels solid enough and doesn't use scissor switches (which I loathe, both in terms of feel and for the fact that my typing style is quite efficient at tearing scissor switch keyboards to shreds). With a bit of luck, I won't catch any horrible diseases from the previous owner. Curse Ducky, though, for making me run that risk...

Sorry to hear that. I hope you can find a good deal for the replacement somewhere.

no, that's what he gets for buying a cheap ass $60 keyboard thinking it was going to last.  there are lots of threads on here about how poor that keyboard is.  when it's marketed as cheap, don't expect it to hold up like a filco or a Ducky 9xxx series board.

duh.

Like Harrison says, can't buy cheap and expect the same quality as high end.

Some of the simplified ALPS switches are pretty damn fragile, whether they be in a $45 Ducky, an $100 Filco, or a $150 Matias. It could also be a soldering issue, knowing a little soldering leads to a pretty simple DIY fix.

I never expected the thing to last for a long time, really...but I did hope that at $43, which is pretty expensive for me, it would last longer than a $10 rubber dome keyboard, which it didn't.

Anyhow, the thing's in pieces now, probably permanently (I'm pretty good at taking things apart. Less so at taking them apart in a way that is reversible). Staring at the bits of it hasn't yielded any insight into why it stopped working properly, though if it was the sort of problem that required soldering and/or a steady hand to fix, I'd be out of luck anyway. Dunno what, if anything, to buy next by way of mechanical keyboards...the Ducky was a lot better, for both typing and gaming, than a rubber dome, and going back to one has been rather unpleasant, but then again, to be financially viable versus domes, a mechanical at anything other than the very bottom of the bottom price tier would have to be good for a trouble-free service of many, many years, even decades-- longer, at any rate, than I can recall any electronic device of any kind, simple or complex, lasting in my presence.

Unfortunately, in my anger-driven dis-assembly attempt, I fear I may have permanently destroyed and/or discarded many more parts of it than were originally non-functional :-(. I tend not to think very clearly when angry, and this would not be the first time I've been out a bit of money because of it (why the hell are walls so expensive to fix, anyway? All they have to do is sit there holding the ceiling up...).

I think I'll stick with this rubber dome (purchased used from Goodwill) for a while...using it may feel vaguely reminiscent of walking through deep mud, but at least it works, and if weight is any indication of quality, may well wind up outlasting its mechanical predecessor. Once I've calmed down more, taken stock, and done some more research, then I can think more about what kind of mechanical keyboard might be a suitable next step.

60 dollar keyboard? They're 33 dollar keyboard. Rest is shipping.

well, those switches are worth more so, you can probably get another board and just use the switches.

either way, at half the price you should have a third the expectations.

No doubt.  Someone dumped their 1008's XM Greens into a AT101W.  I'm sure more than one person would love to buy them.

I am a person with a name, I demand identification as the person with too much time on his hands.  Also the Green XMs rule and am sorry to hear about trouble with yours keyboard.  If this switch came in a sturdier board I would certainly be happy to get one.

I rather liked the feel of them, too. If only they were strong enough to withstand my secret three-finger killer backspace-pressing technique...

What's left of it is in the classifieds here (http://geekhack.org/showthread.php?30327-Duck-Carcass-%28ALPS%29). Now I've got to figure out what comes next...

Seriously I'm LOL'ing here...

Issues:

Switch failure: If this were to happen on any other board it would be written off and OP would be told to solder in another one from an unused key and everything would be roses.  But because it's Ducky it's more fun to get in on some mob action.

Intermittent USB issues: Can happen with any board especially with detachable cables.

Misaligned keys: Well when it's a $50 Ducky it's a huge ****ing issue.  When it's a $150 Filco or $300 HHKB "eh, don't worry about it."

It's a decent board for the money.  And the hypocrisy around here stinks.

Yep.. Just a bit of hypocrisy in here:)

Hmm... another dead duck i see :(
My friend's DK9008S MX red is showing symptoms of USB failure after nearly 2 months of heavy usage.
My Leopold FC500R is older but better than his :P

WTF are you doing to the USB ports to strain them so?

I agree. I haven't committed a great deal of time on the Green ALPS (no daily users) but I was presently surprised at the feel considering the price tag.   1087XM Green ALPS is a great budget board IMO.

9088G2 Pro series coming in May.  Feels really solid.
