Title: Can you mod reds to have another 10g less actuation force?
Post by: mcbrite on Sun, 15 April 2012, 16:13:22
Hey guys!

I've been typing exclusively on reds for over a year now and I love them!
Since I LOVED the difference going from blacks (55g) to reds (45g), the
logical next step would be to try out a switch with 35g force. Is there a
way to mod reds down another 10g?

I had a quick look on GH, but couldn't find anything. On the other hand I
didn't really know what to look for, anyway...

I'd be really surprised if nobody on here ever tried that!?!?

People have tried to mod the spring but it is apparently hard to get it consistent. You also have to make sure the spring has enough force to bounce the switch (and the keycap) back up.

I think if you where serious about it you best bet would be too look at custom springs.

Tried that, posted a similar thread.
Failed since it require some accurate cutting.
Best choice is to looking for alternative springs. (still looking)

Modded Cherry MY should be 25g.

What are you talking about? Cherry MY? 25g? I'm confused...

Cherry MY is another type of key switch
Cherry MY and Cherry MX are not compatible, except that they can take most of the same key caps. You can not replace a Cherry MX switch with a Cherry MY switch.

The only keyboards that have Cherry MY switches are made by Cherry (Cherry brand or OEM).
The switch has two springs in parallel: one coiled spring and a leaf-spring. You can mod it by removing the coiled spring. Then it becomes very light.

One thing you should also take into consideration is the starting force. If the starting force is too light, then you would actuate the switch just by resting a finger on the key. Even an unmodified Cherry MY switch has a very light starting force, and I think that is one of the reasons why it is quite unpopular.
