Title: MechanicalKeyboards.com Launched!
Post by: ShakeR on Wed, 18 April 2012, 22:54:40
Hi Everyone,

I know this thread is a little late as the site launched on the 16th, but the title of the previous pre-launch thread wasn't very fitting.

I'm really trying to push the fact that while we want a massive catalog of mechanical keyboards for everyone to look through (hopefully the largest), the site is not just a 'shopping cart'.  We have a 'Learn' section (see top navigation links on homepage) I'm really committed to growing.   The idea is to create a highly organized and searchable knowledge base for mechanical keyboards.  1% of Geekhack's collective keyboard knowledge would probably suffice, so we're asking for your help if you care to offer it.

I have been granted brother ripster's permission to pull from his Wiki's / threads - you actually see him (ripster @ geekhack.org) sited several times in the 'Terminology' section currently.

If you have anything you would like to contribute, please send it to contribute@mechanicalkeyboards.com

Shameless plug...

Be sure to checkout the site: http://MechanicalKeyboards.com

Especially the keyboard finder: http://mechanicalkeyboards.com/search.php

And Facebook page: http://facebook.com/mechanicalkeyboards

Thread fuel in the form of new keyboard model details...

DK9008G2 Pro (5 improvements over current Ducky DK9008G2)

Dante has already successfully extracted #3.  The new Pro series is coming in May.

The KeyboardCompany isn't the bad guy here; they do a great job and are very easy to get answers from.  However, the packing job that Amazon does is inconsistent and at times downright piss poor.  I know KC has been trying to crack the whip but you don't get a solid packing job like you do from Elite Keyboards or WASD.

Well... if I had known the dozens of emails asking us to carry Filco were due to Amazon's poor packing, I probably would not have spent so much time and energy trying to get the brand.  Don't get me wrong, we pack with the best of them. I was just hoping / had assumed the demand was for a more profound reason than 'better packing' ;)

At least that's one more thing I can add to my list when attempting to convince customers not to buy from the Internet's Wal-Mart aka Amazon.

Also, my apologies if that post came off as critical of KeyboardCompany. It was not intended as such.

Hihi,

When I try to pick Hawaii as a shipping location, I am greeted with the following error:

"Errors were reported while trying to calculate your shipping rate. Please contact us if they persist.
Value out of ship table range."

Any idea how to resolve this?

Thank you very much!

I don't have any camera or smart phone but my filco wrist rest box is heavy damage, good thing the wrist rest itself is not damaged. I ordered from Keyboardco, because amazon.com one doesn't ship to Canada.

I saw the website earlier today after work, and I was quite impressed with the selection: there's really a lot of keyboards there. How many models does ducky make? There's even the Cherry MX Brown & Black versions of the CM storm QF Rapid.

I was pretty happy with most of the website, but I note that there aren't any "odd shaped" keyborads in that category, nor any yellow ALPS switch'd ones or "other" type switches. Other than my odd aversion to empty categories, it was pretty impressive, I hope to see the 'site expand.

why will a loyal ek, wasd customer (this is an example) would buy from you?. What extras are you offering compare with the others?

Hmmm I am wondering. Are the Ducky Dragon year edition based on the G2pro?

I completely agree.  We set up the categories first then added inventory.  I need to go back and clean up empty categories. Yellow ALPS may have been wishful thinking b/c I can't recall a single model we looked at with these switches.

We really rushed the site for the April 16th release and it's not an entirely finished product (we'll always be adding).  I wanted to break the Mechanical Keyboard mold and deliver something on time for once ;) (yes, I'm ignoring the initial March release announcement)

I suppose they would buy from us because we carry something the others don't.  I would imagine most other factors to be fairly equal.  We put customers first, and I imagine EK and WASD do the same or they wouldn't still be in business.  We may have slightly faster ship speeds given our geographical location.  Also, we have a store with a keyboard showroom for people visiting the Nashville, TN area :)

On a related note...
WASD has contacted us to see about partnering where we can and we'll likely be carrying some of their key caps shortly. We may help them with distribution as well.

Excellent question; however, they are keeping this one so far under wraps, I could not tell you.  They've only sent me a picture of the box, and I'm strictly forbidden to share it. (yes, the box looks awesome)

I can't see the picture but the title says Dragon year edition.
So no it is not the one OP is referring to which is Pro edition.

Damn there are ALOT of LED backlit boards on your website i've never even heard of. There isn't even a review for the Nighthawk X9 on geekhack at all. I also find it funny how i search for "Backlit keyboards with PBT Keycaps" and get nothing.

Awesome collection, i see my self buying a keyboard from you pretty soon. Now...get topre keycaps before i choke a ***** lol.

Edit: DAMN this keyboard looks ****ing classy as hell. http://mechanicalkeyboards.com/shop/index.php?l=product_detail&p=78 Reminds me of my old razer lycosa, which i loved that keyboard's design, too bad the lycosa is a bubbleboard. If razer remade that board with mech switches, it would be awesome but this Tesoro Durandal looks alot like it!

PS. So are you not including all the extra stuff that CMStorm gives it's customers if they buy a board? AKA all the extra keycaps and the puller? Kinda...lame.

I wanted to put in an order on the website's opening day so I ordered a Ducky™ DK1087 with Green Alps switches.  I had wanted to try Alps switches anyway so I killed two birds with one stone.

It arrived today so I thought I'd post here to try it out.  I think I like Alps switches.  They feel a bit like MX Blues but the click is not quite as sharp, but it does click.  The keys are kind of noisy and there is some side-to-side "play" in the caps, I guess because of the way the caps attach to the switches.  Overall, I like it and think it's a good deal for $49.00!  The embedded number pad works just like the Realforce's embedded numpad which is great if you need to type an Alt-Numpad character☺

It's a weird hybrid of javascript and Flash.  It worked on my iPad so I assumed it would be fine for everyone.  Are you able to see any pictures at all for the products?

The keyboard area is being remodeled - I'll be posting pics on Facebook along the way.  Inventory is in store and can still be demoed - I just don't have the cool counters and flat screen to show the key presses up yet ;)

I ran the same search myself (PBT backlit) knowing I wasn't going to get a result but hoped I was wrong anyway... I wasn't.  It may not be long though...

Re: CMStorm - if it comes in the box yes.  If not, it appears no.  I'll see about getting them though - No one at CM told me about extras!!!

See above for CM contents.

Our markup on so many of these boards is so close to 0 I can't currently offer a global coupon :( Check Facebook and the home page for promos, as we'll usually have at least one promo going on starting in May.

I second everything you just said about the Green ALPS.  I almost posted on them earlier today and I think you copy and pasted that from my mind.  Do you find that the slight side-to-side play almost seems like it works in their favor?  I don't know why, but I do.

Probably the best budget mechanical keyboard available imo.

Do you have any estimates on when new keycaps will be available?

Specifically, I'm looking for white PBT keycaps.
