Alright kids, we're breaking out the offering plate; it's time to empty the change from your pockets!
GH needs a new hard drive for DB working space. iMav has dumped a reasonable chunk of change into the forum in this past month, much less his time; unfortunately, the backups are now failing due to the storage space they're being written on.
We can see the effects of this first-hand with the loss of posts and PMs over this weekend.
We can let iMav sort out the donations, but we need to step up and be a part of the growth in a positive way. Please click the donate (http://api.viglink.com/api/click?format=go&key=ae397ad5dec9dcac1cf8902258ac4def&loc=http%3A%2F%2Fgeekhack.org%2Fshowthread.php%3F30547-It-s-come-to-Jesus-time-kids!-I-m-breaking-out-the-offering-collection-plate%26p%3D579753%23post579753&v=1&libid=1335194993688&out=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.paypal.com%2Fcgi-bin%2Fwebscr%3Fcmd%3D_s-xclick%26hosted_button_id%3DWCVD8XKFD3R6E&ref=http%3A%2F%2Fgeekhack.org%2Fnewthread.php%3Fdo%3Dnewthread%26f%3D31&title=It's%20come%20to%20Jesus%20time%20kids!%20I'm%20breaking%20out%20the%20offering%20collection%20plate.&txt=%20Donate&jsonp=vglnk_jsonp_13351950726411)button in the header bar, throw in some change, and acknowledge your participation here (without an amount please, no need to turn this into a **** measuring contest). Every little bit helps, the $2 you'd spend on your coffee multiplies pretty quickly.
We've had some constructive discussion about how this might be addressed over here: missing posts/threads and postcount (http://geekhack.org/showthread.php?30273-missing-posts-threads-and-postcount&p=579735&viewfull=1#post579735)
If one of the 'keyboard' mods would like to sticky this for the week, that'd be cool too. (thanks reaper!)

Thanks iMav, for bringing us geehack and keeping it running!

This!

Donated, this is a great site that I've only recently discovered, let's keep it going strong!

More than $1, less than $100.
Now please get an SSD with a reliable Marvell controller. Crucial C400 for example.
-
Well, it doesn't HAVE to be Marvell, but I wouldn't shoot for anything Sandforce until there's a controller+firmware that has been through LSI QA/QE.

I have just emailed a friend that works at intel, i will see what can be done. If you don't mind do you care to share the funds accumulated so far to see if there is enough cash to execute and purchase this ssd this with discount?

that would need to be taken up with iMav directly. get a hold of him via the contact button on the header or via PM.

Donated. Great place!

OK, I'll gladly donate, but I have a question.
Given the mid to high volume of posts on the forums, and all the other backend stuff that must be going on, you must be seeing a lot of data accumulate on whatever hard drive your server currently uses. In other words, a lot of write operations.
Aren't you concerned about SSDs' notable performance degradation over time if the disk is going to be seeing all this traffic? Won't it fill up pretty quickly, even with wear levelling, since data doesn't really get "deleted" from SSDs?
Of course I could be wrong here, or wary about nothing much in particular, but what sort of storage work does this unit need to be doing?
PS: Don't pay the Intel name-brand premium. Get one of these; I can vouch for its reliability, having used one a step up for about a year:
Crucial M4 CT128M4SSD2CCA 2.5" 128GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) with Transfer Kit (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148448)
It's well cheaper, too!

great, i'll pm as soon as I get the pricing.

Question: Are donations tax-deductible?
-
This is not a 501(c)(3), so no. Nice try tho. If you want to do the bookkeeping and pay for all the non-profit paperwork I'm sure iMav might consider it ;)
-
Going to toss in. You might be able to both increase funds and drive some new traffic to the site via a kickstarter funding project or something of that nature.. ever considered?
-
I got a 64gb c4 from Microcenter a while back.. open box discount, great deal.. great ssd! Night and day for my aging pc

That's all good and true, if we had DB write performance issues, we'd want SAS in RAID, but this is for DB backup working space.
-
Uh, no it's not harrison. iMav may have not explicitly stated this, but it's for storing the DB in order to make backing up the DB faster. So it would be primary storage and the HDD would be secondary (used for the backups).

And sorry, Ashort. No rum. Bought this at the liquor store last week next to my dog groomer. Cheap compared to the $1500 Knappogue Castle 1951 Irish Whisky which I didn't buy!

...Flor de Cana 12 & 18 are good enough for me. :)

then we need to raise even more money! hosting the DB on a SSD likely isn't the ideal approach. I clearly misunderstood what he wrote. I'll correct the first post, and pick-up the discussion in the suggestions thread.
-
yes, we need to invest in an intel enterprise grade ssd with a large amount of extra space to expend on wear leveling
edit: apparently not!

Actually, this will be step 2 and will accompany, likely, the next OS update.
I have tons of fast mirrored storage to make snapshots a reality...just need the dedicsted time to reallocate it. But for now, I am looking for fast, internal storage to WRITE the db backups to.

But I'm keeping mine. Just got them last Friday.

RAID 0 with (2) 128GB SSD Crucials Pictured. Just bought a third last week, and have (2) 64s in my other machine. Not a single problem yet and much cheaper than Intel. Love these things!!!
Donated :)
-
Crucials in RAID 0 here too.
-
Here is what my inside connection can help with:
The only ones listed on our purchase site are the 180Gb and 240Gb. Its $233 ($274 at newegg) for the 180GB and $268 ($334 newegg) for the 240GB.
Let me know if this works. Not much of a discount but something.

GH group buy shall be making it's donation soon.
last month i believe it was 140ish.
-
I did it, too

I'll tally the current total later today. I work for McAfee/Intel so do get a discount on their SSDs. (their employee store also takes PayPal, so that is a bonus!) :)
Of course, I'll also price out the more affordable options as well (ocz, crucial, kingston, etc)
-
Donated!
I would like to thank iMav and all the others who help keep this place running in tip top condition. :clap2:

Donated aswell!

Donated. Thanks for hosting this site even though it has been the downfall of my savings.
-
Tossed in a few bucks
Wish I had more to spare
-
Donated :D Hope everything goes smoothly with the upgrade.
-
I donated, but really not much. Though if half the active members donate what I did then a new hard drive won't out of reach!
-
I just donated. This board is a lot like toilet paper. I don't use it a lot, but nothing else quite does the job as well when I need it.
-
donediddly... wish I could donate more!
-
I've donated as well. GH has been a huge supporter for us and we support GH 100%.
-
I threw some money in the iMav hat.
Keep the Hack strong!

It's come to Jesus time kids! I'm breaking out the offering collection plate.
Well, I'm from Israel, and don't know much about "coming to Jesus" or "collection plates", but I do know about helping out when help is needed. My first month here, and you guys helped me out a boat load. Hope my little load helps you back.
-
Hey, another Israeli! Where do you get mechanical keyboards from locally? I had to order mine from Asia and pay ridiculous tax on the thing.
I was also wondering about the "come to Jesus" line. Is that an Americanism? I am fairly well trained in English, but I don't watch American television so all the little pop phrases elude me.
-
Sort of a southern baptist thing I think... and as such probably more of a joke line than anything.

I'm an American Israeli, living in Be'er Sheva, and have gotten a Tt eSports Meka G-1, and a Razer BlackWidow and BlackWidow Ultimate from K. S. P.. But I also have had to shop outside the country to get Filco and Ducky boards. Yes, the shipping charges are horrific, and the Customs/VAT/Handling charges (through EMS) are likewise. Guess that's the price you have to pay for living the good life.
I guess the "come to Jesus" expression is sort of universally Christian. It has to do with the belief that faith in Jesus will save you. (People, correct me if I am wrong.)
Your English is super. If you're a sabra, then your parents can't be.:usa2:

During the church ceremony, an offering collection plate is going threw the ranks to pay for the infrastructure and the pastor. The « It's come to jesus time » is more of an introduction to this donation ritual more than anything else I think.

An expression widely used in the American South. I think Urban Dictionary explains it best:
http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=come%20to%20jesus (http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=come%20to%20jesus)
1. come to jesus
Getting called on the carpet, dressed down, or otherwise chewed out in a severe manner. Usually used in conjunction with "meetin'" (meeting)
He was late one too many times, so the old man dragged him in the office for a "come to jesus meetin'".

yes. as an aside, i was raised baptist, which is why i'm familiar with (and use) the term, but the wiki link above summarizes it well:
http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/come_to_Jesus
(idiomatic, US) To become committed or display commitment to a cause.

My sister lives in Be'er Sheva? You wouldn't happen to be in University would you? (BGU)

the topic is a bit weird for me to.
normally i would never look into a thread with 'jesus' in the topic ;)

Donated. Thanks for giving me a place to dump all of my money :P

Thanks for all the keyboard info!

Donated wish it help and thanks for geekhack.

Donated, it's not that much, but better then nothing.

Just donated a small “Thank You”.

Hadn't paid this thread much mind.. as someone said earlier, the jesus line was a bit out there.. someone should probably change that.. might get a few more donations.
Just donated a bit. Server seems to be running like silk. :)
Cheers iMav *tips hat*

it was meant to catch attention...
it worked.

Been away from GH for awhile, but saw this tonight and sent some funds to iMav. Thanks for keeping GH running :)
-
Donating as a plead to get rid of the annoying captcha.
-
and like magic, it's gone! ;)
anyway, bumping this again because as i said on desko, we do really need money right now. here's what's going on hardware-wise:
1) two drives have gone bad on us in the last 6 days. we have had to replace these drives out of pocket to get the server up.
2) we've been donated a high-performance highly-redundant storage array, but we have had to pay for shipping and some additional hardware to get it up and running. once we get this up, we will be able to significantly increase our transaction rates, storage capacity, and our backup and restore capabilities. we're really excited about this, but so far we have been paying for this all out of pocket.
3) imav has sacrificed both a significant amount of travel time, fuel, and weekends he could have spent with his family to stage and prime the hardware changes we needed to bring the site back up securely and performantly.
i've been working with members of the community to come up with some targeted fundraiser drives (rootworm doubleshot keycap anyone? ;) that will help make up for these efforts, but we can always use more.
thanks for hearing me out folks, and happy geekhacking!
-
Shame you're in the states, have loads of HP gear 580's 380's 360's eva3000/6000 that's just going to cost us to get rid of...
-
no worries; i don't think we could do much with gear that old anyway.
-
:o what spec box does geekhack need!? Surely 2 xeon multicores and 15k sas raid 10 would cope?
I'm using 380's as esxi hosts and getting plenty guests on there with decent performance.

awesome!

the donation campaign has moved to donation links elsewhere and the charity auctions. i'm going to let this thread sink, but please remember that we still need those donations :)
