Title: Doubleshots or custom lasered?
Post by: Netdewt on Thu, 03 May 2012, 22:59:58
I bought a white keyboard because I love the look of dark keycaps on a white board. What should I do? Wait for doubleshots or get a custom WASD set?

Example (not mine):

Double shots ftw.

Sorry that one is not mine, just one I like! I have a white stock TKL Leopold.

Doubleshots have a rich, bold colour which does not fade.

Dark Lasered to light can fade pretty fast.  My Ducky 1008XM is only a few months old, and there's a huge difference in contrast between some of the well-used keys and some of the rarely used ones.

I'm preferential to PBT, so I'd go with lasered PBT were I you. Dyesub PBT is, of course, the best option.

If you like dark keycaps with lighter legends, you'll have to get doubleshot. If you're okay with gold legends, etc. Lasering is good. Either way, I'd recommend PBT.

WASD keys feel cheap IMO. Hate  the lack of texture. OP, depends which doubleshots you're waiting for. If it is something like red/black or creamgreen then definitely get the DS, but if it's something like R4 you'll be waiting for a bit... And by a bit I mean forever.

Yeah, just ask the people from round3 still waiting for their replacements to complete their sets.

I think that comment was that with WASD's plans for PBTs and the color options planned a Dolch-esque set in lasered PBT is a possiblity soon.  Unfortunately last I read was that while they were originally planning on introducing them later this month, that's been pushed back due to supplier/mfg. issues.

I prefer thick doubleshots to thin doubleshots. However, even thin doubeshots are nicer then lazered. Unless you're want that oktau style of blanks with lazered letters which isn't bad.

I agree with Hak Foo, double shots just look so sharp and keep that look over time. Been using a new set of Cherry DS for about 6 months now and I love 'em.

problem with DS is that they get shiny...  if a little wabi-sabi doesn't bother you then they're great though.  Dye subs would be best of all but good luck finding them for a reasonable price!

Going with lazered is only worthwhile in my opinion if you're going REALLY custom. As in you want to use unique font, or icons for every key or something like those multi key art style. However, custom sets of dyesubs looks like it will be an option soon perhaps, which would be even better way to go. You're more limited on keycap color with dyesub, but have the full run of legend color with more complexity which makes it even.
For doubleshots I also agree Cherry is where it's at. Sure they don't have quite as many color choices, and the ones other than black/white are much harder to find but they are so nice.

I don't really mind shiny keys in principle, but in reality Iu might want them to be all the same. Has anyone purposely shined all of their keys? I have a buffer and plastic polish... haha.

Doubleshots soon.

Here's my result. Can't use this space bar though, gotta wait for a Leopold one.

Thanks inlikeflynn!

Like that look, it's pretty awesome lol.

I want to go for a board with engraved keys, as I think that's cool.

Where did you get that big font capkey set? I could use a set like that for my damn vision issue.

I bought a set from a member here, but you can still order one from the round 4 group buy.

Looking good on there! Much better than the stock crappy keys.

You could always try modding that spacebar to make it fit the leopold, there is a guide somewhere in the wiki section.
Or else there are a couple local guys who have done it I know before on other keys, which maybe would do it here as well

I went into the group buy thread and I'm.......dazed. I'm a newbie to this site and I'm not sure how the entire group buy thing works.

You'll get it eventually. Usually first post specifies what's in the group buy and how orders are being collected and once that's past, orders close and invoices go out with specified payment methods. And after most everyone follows through with their orders, everything is purchased, manufactured, possibly corrected ;) and finally... eventually sent out.

TL;DR lots of great work by the geekhack community in turning cash into plastic cubes

Here's the link to R4 -> http://geekhack.org/showthread.php?20485-taking-orders!-Double-shot-replacements-ROUND-FOUR!

To order a set of round 3 keycaps (pictured by Netdewt), you'll want to send a pm to 7bit_R4, containing something along the lines of:
ROUND3/[style]
your@email

You can see the different styles available here (http://deskthority.net/wiki/Doubleshot_Replacements_Round_4#Keyboard_specific_kits).

You should receive an email with further instructions the next time 7bit runs the bot. Keep in mind though, that the gb is nearing it's completion, so there is a limited amount of sets available. Look for a post with the current list in one of the last pages of the R4 thread.

If you have any further questions regarding R4, you can always ask in the thread, 7bit usually responds fairly quickly, and will be happy to help you get the exact set that you need for your keyboard!

Welcome to Geekhack ^^

Thanks. I like it.

Actually I'm not even that disturbed by the useless keys anymore (print, scroll lock, pause) and the non-Apple modifiers since they don't have Windows icons on them. I probably didn't need to buy all that R4 stuff, but it seems like keys on this site are pretty easily resale-able. #1 complaint from a design perspective is that the BACK SPACE and CAPS LOCK keys have a larger font than the rest of the keys. It's a little odd. But, that said, I really like it.
