Title: A well built rubber dome? (BTC-5100C)
Post by: MMB on Wed, 16 May 2012, 22:23:55
I picked this up a couple days ago, and it just arrived in the mail. I had been doing a little reading on it, and it piqued my interest.

Unfortunately, when it arrived... it had the foul stench of cigarette smoke in it. So I decided to give it a bath, soaked in some warm soap water.

Before I tore it down, I will say it felt way better than most of the logitech rubber domes I have owned. Yea, yea... I know... it's still a rubber dome. But this one is
definitely made better than any I have seen to date. And I picked it up for $19 :P

Yeah, I used to have some of those. The older version is even nicer, I had one with individual rubber cup for each key over the pcb instead of the big connected sheet. Then there is the original version which is capacitive foam and foil. Those usually aren't so nice, as they do not age very well. Then I had a more recent one, which no longer had a PCB, but standard mylar membrane, those are very meh. Asides from the mylar one, they are about as good as other better domes boards like Keytonic.

That looks well made indeed. I've only found an old Key Tronic, but it was a good model that's also well made.
They are really good to type on (for a while) as you will eventually miss the switches...at least for me.

Can you wire an AT connector into a PS/2? I mean, are the wires the same inside the cord?

PS/2 and AT use the same signaling scheme, physical adaption of the respective pins is all that's required.

Get'em cheap from eBay.

Are the top row of keycaps compatible with cortronics/devlin magnetic switches?

There have been some fantastic rubber dome keyboards made. My NIB Olivetti is excellent, In some ways, I prefer it to some mechanical keyboards. This BTC also looks really solid.

RD's sometimes get looked down upon here (I know I've done it some), but really there's nothing wrong with enjoying the good ones. Goodness knows the topre fans will rave.

Nice. I have the foam and foil version, and it's really not as bad as people make it out to be. Yours certainly looks better.

It's funny how some vehemently denies that it is a rubberdome. Kinda remind me of Corsair explaining their K60/90 rubber domes are SILICONE rubber domes. Right, show me a rubber dome that don't use silicon rubber.

I just got one of these in Beige perfect condition for 2 dollars. I love it feels sturdy.

Might buy some keycaps for it and say screw POKER II for now.

Can't really justify a poker yet anyway need a SSD, and wireless mouse. Might try to build a bluetooth pack for this keyboard that way I can use it on the poker later on.

So is Bro Caps really MMB? Some interesting history and drama in the world of keyboards from before I discovered the hobby...
