Hey, looking to buy a decent spec'd, smaller windows/linux laptop. Something like 13-14 in screen. Not really looking for netbooks, but I'll entertain an offer. Doesn't necessarily have to work, but I'd prefer it. If you've got something lying around, let me know. Dual core, maybe, couple GBs of RAM. Just looking to make some coding at school easier.

Xotic PC has a good lineup to check different manufacturer builds, parts and you can search by screen size or gpu, processor, ETC for laptops.

I've never bought from xotic because they ****ed around too much on the pricing and the parts with me too many times, but its good for research. I ended up going with malibal, but they only feature five different larger models.

You can probably find a used Google Cr-48 Chrome Notebook. I use mine every day. Just install Ubuntu on there and you're good. Very light weight.

Used 13" macbook (before they made the 13" macbook pro): http://www.powermax.com/parts/code/PM_CU_MK with an aftermarket RAM upgrade.
Awesome deals on pretty durable laptops, good for students, runs all three OSes. OS X comes with a legit shell and the option to install dev tools (gcc, X, etc).

What's the deal with everyone recommending ThinkPads? I've used two over a period of six years and they might be some of the worst notebooks I've ever touched.

As long as you get the IBM derived designs they are rather nice laptops.

Fantastic news! You can run Windows and Linux on any intel Mac!

Aside from whatever you have against the OS (and trust me, I couldn't care less), they're really good student machines. Aluminum case = good for backpacks, and the screens Apple uses are bar-none the best for any consumer laptop. Defintely a plus compared to Thinkpads (which I love, but their screens are just ****ing terrible).

I'm not looking to spend mac money though. Just looking for a cheap, older laptop I can throw VSC# on with some libraries.

That sucks, maybe it wasn't the business line but more of their consumer line?  I was going to recommend a thinkpad x220 or a Macbook.  

My old x220 was built like a tank, small but with an IPS panel, great feeling keyboard and full powered mobile CPU.
