Title: Model M Keycaps
Post by: ThePringler on Thu, 24 May 2012, 12:26:13
Hey guys,

I am looking to buy some Model M key caps for my 1989 IBM Model M keyboard. Please post any customized ones you have for sale! :)

I am mostly interested in blank colored key caps. I know they are available from Unicomp; $1 each is pricey enough, i am not willing to pay an extra $30 for shipping as well.

Thanks guys!

That's pretty much the only place to get new sets, unfortunately.

Yes, i said above that i know Unicomp sells them but i do not feel like paying $80 for 30 single colored key caps.

I live in Ontario, Canada. From the unicomp website? I am interested in blank keycaps from the image below. They are $1 each. So a set would be 26 keys, $26. Shipping is over $30. I have no problem with paying $1 per keycap but i do have a problem paying $30+ for shipping. There is no way shipping can be close to that price.

Personally, I think the $1 per cap is much more onerous. For 4 caps, it's not so bad, but for the price of 40 you could buy a junk Model M on ebay and get a lot more for your money.

I have asked about extra Model M caps for sale, but I don't think many people want to part with them. I probably have a couple of incomplete sets laying around, but always seem to be way short on certain others (F2, *, the large numpad keys, for example).

Good luck with your search.

So find a US proxy and see if you can get it cheaper. But you would still have to pay for the shipping from Unicomp to them, and them to you. Either way, I don't think you have a lot of options.

I know someone in Germany who recently got a discount on shipping by writing to Unicomp and asking for a shipping quotation instead of relying on the website's shipping calculator. Nothing to lose by submitting a ticket.

Thanks, that could work.

I posted this thread in the hope that there may be a GeekHack keyboard enthusiast that makes/colors them or has an extra set and would be able to sell them at a slightly cheaper price. I am looking to change my letter key caps to a solid color and look for any unique ones for sale.

I guess i will just bite the bullet and pay double price just for the shipping from unicomp...
