Maybe thinking of designing a keyboard pcb with Cherry MX1A switches and individually addressable rgb leds under each key.
The PCBs would be kinda expensive to get manufactured given their size but in a reasonable quantity it may become reasonable.
I did not post this in the group-buy forum as there is nothing to buy :-P
I've designed a similar keyboard before (see my other posts for images of my 192 key and 192 led behemoth).

Some similar ideas were discussed here (http://geekhack.org/showthread.php?26751-Next-GH-brewed-KB-design-The-Light-%28open-for-discussion%29)... not sure if it's going anywhere or not though. I'm definitely looking forward to another GH custom, I regret not getting in on the Phantom.
Personally I would most like something similar to this layout to happen:

We're always in support of more custom keyboards, but personally, I would like to see this kind of functionality integrated into the next Phantom keyboard revision.

I thought the next project was called the.light and quit similar to this.

__red__, how do you intend on fitting RGB leds? There are no 3mm RGB 4 lead leds and that would still require modifying the switch housing.

I just followed the above links and y'all are right, it doesn't exist.
There are however bi-color leds in 3mm.
Since I've now seen there are existing projects with much the same aim my efforts may be better spent helping with those.

Good idea. links would have been interesting...
Looks like a rollback ate my previous post aboumy existing design.
pcb designs and firmware are all open source on github.
Gonna head over and bump those other threads and see of there is some way to contribute.
