it's 6 months old... i don't think 6 months old is worth it for that price especially since we found out that topre switches wear much sooner than mechanical

Once I read that thread about the switches wearing out sooner I haven't even looked at Topre boards.

That thread is still wide open. One person thinking it's stiffer than it originally was without any data from when it was new is far from conclusive. This is just misinformation being spread with no data to back it up - just like 99% of everything on the net. He also makes his claim after 5 years of use.

Good find fohat.

No offence but "we" would imply that you actually had something to do with the thread. You didn't; you just read it.

Myself (on the first page) and a few others throughout the thread all pointed a number of fundamental problems with the methodology, sample size and statistics underpinning this conclusion.

Call me a scientist... but if you can't provide mathematical/statistical support for there being a genuine effect in the population; don't say there is...

didn't read past the first page and you weren't on it so as far as i'm concerned, you're not part of the "we".
i am part of the we that i stated because i took the information and made a conclusion myself :) has nothing to do with you or your input.
after the first few posts, it's clear to me that there are problems in the topre switches that occur over time aka WEAR.
while yes, mechanical switches have problems too, topre costs 2-3 times more.
don't try to and be a stupid ass kthx. all that is needed is 1 defect for the domino effect to occur.

wear or not, i will still never settle for anything other than topre after feeling that hybrid rubber / spring feeling. feels so good...

6 month old 87U for $215 is a bargain all around period.
put one on classifieds at that price and i guarantee it will sell within 12 hours . (given reasonable condition of course)

See post #35.

"All that is needed is 1 defect for the domino effect to occur." Lol, that's a good one, let's just hope that this 1 isn't in the top 2.5% of the sampling distribution.

I don't even own a Topre board, but it seemed like a good find. And I know that they are pricey.

Haha, well you definately did me a favor(i hope). Even though it's 6 monthes old, the pics seem pretty decent. I'll post pics and stuff when i get it to see how it actually is. I'll test it with nickels in homage of ripster!

Great deal! I would have bought it if I didn't have RF.

I am also interested in the data. There are some measurements of HHKB, but there isn't any measurements from RF 45g boards(at least I couldn't find them). I doubt the measurements would be off by large margin since it is relatively new, but if RF 45g behave more like HHKB, then it could actuate around 50g or little more.

I observed several measurements of HHKB and the keys in the middle(alphabets) were slightly more stiffer than the keys that are peripheral(modifiers and etc).

Fossala's measurements (see here (http://geekhack.org/showthread.php?27474-Topre-rubber-dome-stiffening&p=557001&viewfull=1#post557001))

i think we can all agree that setting off fireworks on your RF will cause unacceptable and premature keyswitch wear

Alright so I've received it today, it was packed nicely in lots of foam peanuts! The keyboard looks practically new despite it being used for 6 months. The tip of the spacebar is only very slightly shiny.

After rip-o-metering the homerow, I've found that only the H and ' keys actuated at 45g, the F key requiring 55g, and the rest 50g. Not totally sure what to think of this, I dont want to draw any conclusions. I can't feel the difference in the keys despite this, so it doesnt bother me at all.

For only $215, it was a great find!

Nice score, it was in my watch list and I nearly bought it a couple of times.  An 87u has been my main driver at work for the last several months, it's awesome.

Topre's specification is +/- 10g or 5g I can't recall which right now.  Type on it for at least a week and try not to bottom out, only then will you know for sure how to feel about Topres.  I've gone back and forth a few times and have concluded it's a "switch" that you need to use a while to know if it's going to work for you.

Thanks! I think the specification is actually +/- 15g. I've been using a 87u variable (bought for $200) for a few weeks already, and that's why I jumped for this 87u 45g as soon this thread was posted up. Topres are really nice to type on, and they're quiet too!

Yikes, so you could have a 30g F and 60g J and still be in spec?
No one believes me but I bought a 103UW when Elite first started selling Realforce keyboards that had 30g pinky keys when it should have had 35g pinkies.  The earlier 101 had 30g pinkies so I've wondered if some of the early 103U's had the same domes by mistake or using up old stock/manufacturing setup.

Yeah, it's mentioned in the topre wiki that they're +/- 15g, and that the 86u had 30g on the pinky keys.

Thanks for sharing the measurements. I think your RF is pretty close to its specification considering how off the measurements were for the HHKBs. Moreover, the measurement of 50g could mean it required 46g to actuate a key. So, I would recommend trying to measure them again using two pennies (if you are curious that is). One penny weighs 2.5g so you could have slightly better measurements.

Great deal, I would have definitely jumped on this. Honestly, I don't see how the rubber could break down that fast. My board sees heavy use as my daily driver and feels just as good if not better from when I first bought it from being broken in.

Granted all materials are different, but the rubber in these boards should last years if not decades.
