available?: should be available from Cherry within 8-12 weeks, but not confirmed

Prices might be lower, as quantities are higher.

The price for the MXLOCK is not too high, but it was too low last time (we where just lucky).

Shipping costs are $5 no matter how many are ordered.

Prices are in USD but you can pay in EUR using a fixed exchange rate of 1 EUR = 1.3 USD.

Please notice that some switch-types are not available right now (late 2012 / early 2013).
I will ship whatever I get, so you can pre-order any switch and get all the available switches earlier.

Do I need plate mount switches or pcb mount switches for the poker DIY and the ErgoDox/Ergo64?

As far as I know, the Poker is onlt a PCB, no mount plate, so you need the PCB mountable switches (with the 2 plastic pins at the bottom).

You need plate mount switches if you ordered the plate mount in the DIY kit.

Edit: nvm, I think you can use pcb even with the plate mount.

You can. It'll just make the switch even more stable.

because some PCBs don't have the holes for the PCB mounted switchs.

So you need to cut off the 2 extra pins, and tadaa.

TL;DR: order PCB*mounted switchs. Unless you know you want pcb mounted switchs.

Maybe some companies don't want the extra work of punching two more holes per switch?

you don't drill in your PCB, you cut the pins from the switch :p.

Any popular plate mounted boards that don't have the extra two holes?

If its plate mounted, 99.9% it won't have the extra holes.

Hell, I've only really seen Korean custom boards do both.

You can try to get these from a different supplier. We can wait with this until early 2013 and then the switches which where available become available again in late 2013. That's the way things are.
Whatever we order, they will deliver as soon as they can, so I can ship out all available or soon avoilable switches way before early 2013.

Thanks for the answer; I learn something new every day.

Unfortunately it might be irrelevant; no Clears until next year.

You can order the clears without pins and then swap with switches which are available with pins.

Also, maybe we find another source for the unavailable switches which has them in stock.

The only problem is that there will be no browns and reds.

If you really need MX Red switches that are PCB Mount, It's been stated that Kinesis sells them in packs. Just contact them personally.

@merijin,
As for the ErgoDox, Dorkvader will be offering a soldering service, which would lead one to believe the switches will be plate mounted. Also you can look at Page 43 of the ErgoDox thread, and the prototype PCBs do not have the additional holes necessary for PCB mounting. Dox can of course confirm this, but everything to this point has led me to believe that the ErgoDox will be Plate mounted only. Hope that helps!

Cheers,

If you look at the ergoDOX PCB, you'll notice that it does/will have holes for PCB-mount switches. You should be able to order either and be fine. The PCB mount ones will work with the mounting plate on the proposed case design.

Actually, you can see the back of his soldered PCB with the PCB-mount switch stabilizers peeking up through the board.

Dorkvader,

Aha! I seriously thought that was solder the first time I looked at the PCB. There are two holes that would indicate PCB mounted switches will work OK. I guess that explains why people were excited they could order LED MX Red switches from Kinesis. Hmm, that means I might only need assembly on one board, unless the plate will interfere.

The switch has a different action, where you hit it once to depress (and activate it) and again to release. I've always wanted one for a function lock to bring up a second layer: most likely on a phantom converting the right side to a numpad instead of arrow/media/etc keys.

Thinking of the ErgoDox, it would be useful for switching between custom layers (when we get that far).

So, you wouldn't use these for a cap, num or scroll lock on a regular kbd? I am guessing the two position is built into the chip on the kbd? Will any of these be needed for a "shifted" function on the DIY Race kits iMav is doing the group buy for?

I wouldn't mind using it for caps/num/scroll (well for numlock. I never use capslock, and Scroll lock gets little use), but I do believe the way the switch operates, you'll need to edit the firmware. You'll have to ask someone that owns one, though.
Title: Cherry MX (taking pre-orders!)
Post by: jdcarpe on Wed, 06 June 2012, 10:26:12
From what I can gather, the locking switch would not replace keyswitches that, when pressed, activate a "lock" function, such as Caps Lock, Scroll Lock, or Num Lock. The lock switch would rather replace a normal momentary closed switch, in order to keep the switch closed after it is pressed, and activate that keypress until it is pressed again to open the switch. For instance, if you replaced your left shift keyswitch with a lock switch, once you activate the left "shift lock," YOU WOULD GET CHARACTERS LIKE THIS INCLUDING THE NUMBER ROW< ETC>< !@#$%^&*()_+> WHEN YOU PRESS THE LEFT SHIFT AGAIN TO DEACTIVATE IT< you would cancel the lock. You could theoretically replace any modifier switch with a lock switch, but I don't know how often you would need to keep a modifier, e.g. Ctrl, Alt, Win, Menu, held down like that. Maybe like dorkvader said, for a Fn-lock.

If it is down it is just like permanetly pressing that switch. So better map it to shift and call it Shift Lock. On Caps Lock it just acts the following way:

Down: Caps Lock on
Up: Caps Lock still on
Down: Caps Lock off
Up: Caps Lock still off

Thanks for clarifying. I see this as shiftlock (if you're into that sort of thing) or FN-lock (very useful)

Nice answer. Then it acts just like a caps, num and scroll lock on a standard 104 key keyboard. So my question then, in my ignorance, is, are any of these required for the Poker kits iMAV is offering? If so, how many?

For Poker DIY? You don't need any lock switches. Just 61 of whichever color you like best. PCB-mount. Or 122 if you plan to fill both PCBs in the kit.

If you use switches with light springs, i.e. Browns, Blues, or Reds, some people like to use a heaver switch for the spacebar. For example, if you use Brown switches, you could use a tactile Grey for the spacebar. With Blues you could have a Green spacebar. Reds -> Black. Blacks -> Linear Grey.

I think I would use locking switches for my TIPRO...

Layer 1, off, off
Layer 2, off, on
Layer 3, on, off
Layer 4, on, on

Atleast that could be one way to utilize those...

Yeah, I picked up the heavier space bar switch thing from the WIKI. SOme people actually read them. Anyways, I will populate both PCS. I am planning 1 with blues and a green spacebar and the other with reds and a black spacebar.

I am just too lazy to search, so I'll just ask here. How does the MX Lock work mechanically? I suppose I can't just pop the top of a switch and replace it and that MX Lock requires to be changed completely. Thanks

Edit: Can I change from an MX switch to the MX Loxk just as easily as you change between the usual MX switches? That is my question really.

The programmable cherry boards would suit it nicely though. Program it to be a 'hold for caps' and that locking key would be interesting. That could also be done for so many key, like insert for instance, to easier see when it is enabled.

Is anyone able to help me confirm this (taken from the wiki (http://geekhack.org/showwiki.php?title=Cherry+switches+and+boards))

MXGREY = Light Grey (grey 39): tactile, Actuation Force 80cN, used for space bar in Cherry Corp keyboards with clears and browns, MX1A-D (Compaq MX 11800), G80-8955HPDUS (POS)
MXWHITE = Clicky switch. Opaque (?) White stem. 80cN activation force. MX1A-A.

Is the MXWHITE actually clicky or tactile?  The wiki says the datasheet says:

MX1A-Momentary single Pole with Tacticle Feel, 80cN Standard, Movement Differential, white keystem

Whites have essentially the same stem as blues, so it's a clicky switch.

MXWHITE is clicky sort-tactile. Also the click is less clicky than with blues or greens. It is white, unlike the clear switches. Please don't mess it up with the historic whites, which where the predecessor of the blues.

Some people say it is similar to a clicky ALPS, but in fact Cherry MX switches are made for robustness, abusability and key caps compatibility, not for being nice to type on.

Having received a batch of switches from 7bit, here's my take on fiddling with bare switches.

White is less clicky(noise) and less tactile(feel) than blue or green.  It feels a bit heavier than green.

1) First off, is there a bounty on ppl that order a few of each and make life hard for you?
2) Is that shipping fee valid for EU buyers as well?
3) If most of the switches will be available by 2013, is there any reason for me to get in on them now or would it just be better to wait for a group buy closer to their date of availability?
4) Are there ever any group buys of switches with diodes?
I am new to this if you didn't notice already :P

2) Is that shipping fee valid for EU buyers as well?
3) If most of the switches will be available by 2013, is there any reason for me to get in on them now or would it just be better to wait for a group buy closer to their date of availability?
4) Are there ever any group buys of switches with diodes?
I am new to this if you didn't notice already :P

1) I asked this question myself (more or less), and the answer was no, there's no "LOWQTYFEES" or anything like that, and neither does it say so in the email I received.
2) AFAIK, yes. I am, however wondering how 7bit plans on splitting up the shippings. He mentioned he would just ship out whatever he gets, but wouldn't that add up the shipping costs?
3) Supposedly not, but you might forget. In any case, there's not much reason not to get in on this now, either, as you could always cancel your order, if need be.
4) If you're talking about LED's, I doubt it, you'll have to find the specific LED's yourself (which shouldn't be too hard either). Other members can fill you in on the requirements for them, as I can't remember them off the top of my head.

4) This is only the second ever switch group buy so there's not much precedent to go on.  It may be a little labor intensive, but you can always purchase diodes separately and put them in the switches yourself.

Let's say I would order 4 of each switch. It would be perfectly fine with me if he waits until he has gotten them all before he sends them. Sending out partial orders wouldn't work really. It seems unreasonable to send them out as he gets them, especially to EU for each switch type as they arrive since there would be so many separate shipments.

Since I will then have to wait for the complete order, I may as well wait for another group buy to pop up again a couple of months, or see if this one is still active by then, since the 2013 orders will still be waiting for delivery I suppose.

Thanks for your answers btw

1:?

2: Shipping costs are $5 no matter how many are ordered.
This is worldwide the same, even if you come to me and pick them up.

3: If you wait until early 2013, you will probably wait until early 2014 to get your switches, ie if I organise a 3rd switch group buy at all!

To make it clearer:
We must order last week to get them by February 2013. Maybe current earliest delivery date is March 2013.

4: I doubt they have any with diodes ready, so diodes will have to be ordered separately. Nevertheless, I will ask for them. Same for LEDs.

From some point onward, shipping costs are quite linear to the number of switches, so I just take $5 per order, no matter how many switches you order.

LEDs: I try to get prices for genuine Cherry LEDs in red, yellow, green and maybe orange.

Many platemounted keyboards have the diodes not in the switches, BTW.

I do think of 100s of switches, when I say I ship those which are available now immediately after receiving them and the rest later.

Definitely interested in orange, probably red as well. Has anyone tried changing them on a recent g80-3000 ? They're so tiny it seems almost impossible to me.

i went to pull a keycap off, and pulled the entire switch stem out of the shell. broke two tiny clips that held it in.

PM me, I can send you a clear for free, I think the housings are the same. Not sure how much shipping will be though.

The part he needs is a blue stem, that's the bit with the retention clips.

Sounds like the stem came out, and broke two of the retention clips on the top of the switch housing. I have lots of switch housing tops. Pics?

So I can't help.

I may get in on this, but it depends on whether I end up finding first:

1. A Red Switch Filco and an aluminum case for it
2. A Cheat with no switches/not red switches

koreans didn't really fall for the red switch hype like everybody else did.

chances are you'd find a cheat with either blues, browns, or clears all with custom springs.

If you really need MX Red switches that are PCB Mount, It's been stated that Kinesis sells them in packs. Just contact them personally.

I know this is an old comment, but FWIW: Kinesis only sells reds (and maybe browns), typically in quantities of 5-10 per order, to support their own boards.  Not that they seem like suspicious people, but when I asked for 170 switches they were curious if I was modding a contoured board, and I wasn't about to lie to them.  Oh well :) .

If I put my order in at deskthority when geekhack refugee camp was going strong is this essentially the same group buy? Also since MX Clear for plate mount says in stock will those orders go out any time soon?
Also any chance for a status update on #s ordered?

Okey, locked this up because even tho 7bit swings by every once in a while he is NOT posting.

If you need to deal with this GB, please go pester him on Desthority.  Here's the GB thread (http://deskthority.net/marketplace-f11/cherry-mx-taking-pre-orders-t2760.html).
