Title: New Filco DOA?
Post by: Mmmbacon on Tue, 05 June 2012, 22:42:54
So i bought into the hype and purchased a filco Majestouch Ninja w/brown switches. It came today.  What a piece of art.  Great lookin board. Only problem, the row with the number and symbol keys [the one below the f keys] only the 5, 6, = and backspace work. Press one through four and nothning happens. It is this way on usb, and with two different ps2 adapters. All  exhibit the same problem.
The number on the numpad are all ok.  This has been tested on Windows 7 both 64 and 32bit, and windows XP.  Are there settings anywhere or dip switches that I can look at or did I just receive a 200 dollar best of class keyboard DOA? Anyone else experience anything like this with a new filco??

Also, I think the "Rosewill is a rebranded Filco" rumor is true. I have the rosewill with black switches and the cases are exactly the same. They are the same weight.  Only diff is the badge and location of the usb cable.

There's no dip switch on the Filco... well, none that I know of anyway.  Where did you buy it from?  Just return it and exchange for a new one.  I have 8 Filcos (some were bought used) and they all work flawlessly.

It's not really much of a rumour WASD, Das, Filco, Rosewill and CM quick fire rapid all come from the same OEM.

Also hard luck I say get an exchange it's a really nice board.

it's the same OEM but very slightly different designs. i'm not entirely sure of the logic behind it, and only have experience with a filco MJ1, which was excellent..

Thanks for the input, I feared as much. I hear nothing but good things about filco, and mines DOA lol. This after returning a Rosewill for the famous usb port defect. My mechanical keyboard luck is due a change.  I got the filco from Amazon, so their refund policy is painless.

This was also my first keyboard with brown switches.  They surpassed blues as my favorites. It feels like floating across the keys once you really get your speed up.  Seems they are the perfect balance for me.

With a mechanical keyboard all it takes is 1 trace short, a fleck of something where it shouldn't be or a crack or cold solder joint and it will do what you describe.  I've fixed tons of vintage boards with broken traces or issues but on a new one I wouldn't even bother.  Just send it back and get a good one.  And it's not necessarily that Filco didn't do quality checks, things settle and move in shipments and mechanical boards have many points of failure, far more than a rubber dome.  Good luck on the replacement, Filcos are great boards.
