Title: At A Brick Wall...
Post by: funxion on Mon, 25 June 2012, 20:37:19
So as some of you may already know, I've been having some trouble here and there with overclocking. The reason I've been trying to overclock some parts of my rig is because I've noticed a general decrease in performance in the past month or so. After trying to overclock my GPU and not seeing any real performance increase (maybe I'm doing something wrong, but I've followed what everyone's told me to do and it didn't work) I decided to kick it back to factory settings.

I'm not sure what's going on, if some parts may not be working like they were originally, or if I'm doing something wrong, but most of my rig is from November of '09.

My Build:
-CPU: Intel i5 750 Lynnfield 2.67GHz (OC'd to 3.8GHz about a year after purchased, still holds same OC; may have messed up some settings after going into BIOS about a week ago, not sure what I did though)
-GPU: EVGA GTX 560 Ti Classified 448 Core (OC'd, but brought back to stock within the past few days because I experienced a few abnormalities that were scaring me a little; upgraded (?) from a GTX 275)
-MB: EVGA P55 (no BIOS flashes since purchase, nothing done to it at all)
-RAM: G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (11-11-11-28)
-HD: Western Digital Caviar Green 500GB 3.5" SATA 3.0Gb/s (nothing done)
-PSU: CORSAIR CMPSU-750TX 750W
-CPU Cooler: ZALMAN CNPS10X Extreme 120mm

I'm going to start out with reformatting to see if I've encountered any bad files and whatnot unless someone has a recommendation for a hardware diagnostic tool? I can't seem to figure out what the problem is, but I'm pretty set on resetting my CPU's OC to factory settings.

If it matters, I mainly use this rig for gaming. Mostly playing CoD4 at the moment, which happens to not be a strenuous game to run, and I'm seeing what seems to be choppiness even with a constant 250 FPS.

Really would appreciate some help with this.

The choppiness could be screen tearing and if that is the case you can get rid of that by turning on v-sync. This will sync your frame rate to your monitors refresh rate.

Now as far as the performance of overclocking your gpu, when I overclocked my HD 6870 I didn't notice any huge performance increase. I think I might have only gained a couple fps.

Here is a review on  a card similar to yours, maybe you can compare the numbers and see if your getting anything different.

Windows 7's built-in "Resource Monitor" has some useful measurements (and graphs) you can use to see if you're maxing out the CPU or hitting the disk frequently.

i think you should try updating drivers
