Title: Weird stabilizers on my Filco.
Post by: krat3z3 on Sat, 21 July 2012, 09:37:32
Hi, I have received my new Filco keyboard few days ago. The feel of cherry blue is great, I am glad that I picked up this one. Everything seems and feels amazing except stabilizers. Left shift, right shift and enter work quite strage. For example: when I press down left shift from side "Z" letter, especially top corner the key is stiffer then when I press shift on the middle or outside. Right shift, enter work similiar so they are stiffer from the inside too. However spacebar and backspace work perfectly fine. I imposed grease already, anywere stabilizers moves so bottom and white hold are greased now but it didn't help at all. If everything is greased and work kind of smooth why does it behave like that?
It start to be annoying, I commonly type two capital letters instead one. May it be fault of cherry switch, isn't it strage it happends on the widest stabilized keys?
Sorry for my broken english but please answer if you had experience with this or you know how to fix it. Thanks

Remove the keycap if you have a decent tool to do so, and look if everything is alright.

Mine for example had a leg broken.

And post pics, lots of pics.

For me those keycaps (cross sticking with switch) are skew, except backspace which work good. Do you agree with me or skew like this is normal?

It looks like you had the grease on really heavy. But anyway, re-seat the keys and make sure that they are straight. No key should have an angle.

The L shift and enter stems look a little skewed.... but im not too sure on that. Otherwise, they look like they should fit just fine.

Right, from the start stabilizers looked good to me as well. I was looking for reason why it is siffer on the side. Read some and decided to lube stabilizers but it didn't help at all. What about keycaps, they seem to me like twisted (except R4 backspace, which one work fine). Maybe when it isn't perfectly straight and I press down the key it try to turn and stabilizer holds it, then press become harder. That make sense to me, what do you think?

Only way to test, aside from just looking at it, is to use another set of keycaps if you have one. Have you tried taking the surrounding keys out and then pressing the stiff keys?

try popping the stabilizer bar out of the clips with your finger nail, tweezers, etc.........clean everything off, apply just a smidge of lube to stabilizer bar and reinstall. is there a piece of obscure plastic, trash in the "clip" resticting it? if the bar is rough just run some sandpaper over it.

thats a lot of greace you got in there.

if the stabilizer bar is not fully seated it will be stiff on that side

like gunner said try or swap out another keycap

I have not any extra keycaps. May I swap enter with shift? Size is the same right?

ps. Do you really think that keycaps are ok?

They're the same size, but different profile. It's worth a try I suppose.

Solution:
I almost gave up, that was my last idea. Last but successful, I pull out keycap and underneath are two white legs. I pulled out this one closer to stiffer side for like 0,5mm and everything work great now! If you read this because you have the same problem be careful if you pull out this for more then 1mm stiff may change side. Summarizing white legs are very important and when they are not in the perfect position feel may not be perfect.

I'm glad you found a solution! Never would have thought that pulling out the costar stabilizer tab would help, since they're usually supposed to be in all the way.
