Other options, previously discussed:
- Emporium Chicago (http://www.emporiumchicago.com): Big arcade that just opened up in Wicker Park
- Moon Palace Restaurant (http://www.moonpalacerestaurant.com): My family's Chinese restaurant in Chinatown
- ignite network (http://ignitenetwork.com/): Trent suggested this gaming lounge, which would be a good atmosphere for our hobby
- Galloping Ghost: Midwest largest arcade.
Date:
Saturday, August 18th at 1:30pm
http://emporiumchicago.com/
I have been meaning to make it out there.
Well obviously yes since I suggested this idea to you :P
Depending on the group, we may be able to host the event at the ignite network gaming lounge in the city. Here is their URL: http://www.ignitenetwork.com/ (http://www.ignitenetwork.com/)
And a flashy youtube video:
http://youtu.be/kYqiWpbhiK4 (http://youtu.be/kYqiWpbhiK4)
I talked to one of the managers. Depending on the size, the cost would be $0 or if there is more than a certain amount of people there is a charge of $5 per hour. Given the atmosphere I think it'd suit very well for the event, but we'd have to talk to em.
Yea - not interested in...those treats...
Beers and Chinese food for sure though!
count me in !
The #1 keyboard I would like to try is the 55g Topre.
HHKB would be 2nd place.
im going to rob them all.
going to strap my kmac to my arm and ssk to the other arm and spin around until i knock somebody out

demlik?????
For reference, here's my family restaurant's website: www.moonpalacerestaurant.com
Also, YUIOP is a Chicagoan too! And obviously everyone/anyone feel free to bring significant others, friends who are interested in keyboards (I'll be bringing a friend of mine who isn't on GH), etc.
i3, you should put this link in your sig like I am!
sounds like a good opportunity for someone to snatch up an MX mini with lubed and stickered browns! :D (i keed i keed)The #1 keyboard I would like to try is the 55g Topre.

I will have a 55g there an mx mini with lubed and stickered browns a few CAD design ideas to discuss and lots of caps.
My rule, no talking money in the presence of the chicas. My wife has no clue what I have spent and I don't really want to have a going out of business sale just yet.

Either weekend works for me and I don't care about location. We usually stay at a la quinta In Hinsdale and take the train into town.
My wife is Mexican so I completely understand how we Americanize everything and call it authentic. Her family laughs at us.
I hear there is some pretty shady cap trading that takes place in these smoky back rooms of Chinese restaurants.
I'm going to be taking a train in too. If you want to split a cab at Union Station let me know.
How does the Saturday, the 18th sound for everyone? If I don't hear any chirps by end of day today, it's set.
Trent where are you?!

BTW: would anyone be interested in sampling a Thailand made Dell Quietkey? I've been thinking of giving it away.
Also depending on the "auction" (it's all crickets) I might ask the winner (if they still want it) if I can postpone shipping the Wyse w/ Vintage Cherry Blacks so that everyone here can try it.

Rubber domes aren't taboo. Look how many people in denial that are using Topres? :)
Cherry reds. The most over hyped of all the switches.
Green or white ftw
Green or white ftw
Sorry I didn't see this post, I haven't been checking this thread that much. I will contact them about the day, but I honestly think that having it at your family's restaurant would be 1: more delicious and 2: more delicious 3: probably more space at your location, ignite said they'd be able to quarter off a small table but any more than 4ish people and in my personal opinion I think it'd be considered a bit cramped -- Either way I will email them about this right now, I'll let you know what surfaces.
Trent
The thing with going to my restaurant is, if my parent's knew about this keyboard hobby I have...they would kill me. I'd rather cater the food in if possible =) Or discuss/play around with keyboards elsewhere first, before having dinner/meal at my place, lol.
BTW, I'm not a kid. I'm 26 (turning 27 next month) and have a full time job, etc etc. But my parent's still have a guiding influence on me somehow...
Green or white ftw
Green? If you want strong tactile feedback just use a Model M -- and white I must say are quite nice.
I'm a glass half full kind of guy!
DangWang: Ignite informed me that they are closed on August 18th and 19th. I think we should try to host it at your family's restaurant maybe?
looking forward to hearing how you guys made out.............

There will be no making out at this meetup ???

So any other suggestions for the actual discussing of keyboards meetup portion? =)

I'm seeing if we can maybe push this back a little.
Edit: And yes, I am Chinese and my family owns a Chinese restaurant =) There are plenty of horror stories to be told about my adolescent youth.
@Trent -- For ignite, can we host something with roughly 10-12 people though? You mentioned earlier it was like max 4 people or something, or maybe I'm bad at reading.

I WANT ORANGE CHICKEN!!!
Since I am far removed from Chicago and haven't been involved in the planning I don't want to complain, so I'll call it a suggestion. The first thing that comes to my mind is one of those rooms that you rent for birthday parties a Chuckies Cheese. Maybe even a small unused room and a small hotel, La Quinta or Ramada Inn. Just a couple of thoughts. I would have no problem throwing in $10 for a comfortable venue where we have lots of room.
John
OK, we'll stick with it being in August. Any suggestions on meeting room venues that we can rent for cheap? i3oiler? Trent? jcrouse?
OK, I just called the La Quinta where the wife and I stay. It is in Willibrook. I know that's 20 minutes ouside of Chicago but this is just an exmple. They have a room that easily holds 10 to 12 people and 3 hours time is $50 and 4 hours is $60. I say we do something similar, where we can pull out cars up, unload and have a geekfest in comfort and privacy.
Thoughts?
Depaul University maybe?

We make some bomb orange chicken, despite how westernized it is. Still a delicious dish, imo.
Do you have pork blood cake or any congee specials? I'm sure the orange chicken is great - its just not often when the opportunity comes up to try "off the menu" items that might make most white people cringe.
I'll travel anywhere but ideally if it's going to be in Chicago it won't be too expensive to get to by cab from Union Station.
Depaul University maybe?
Would be a nice venue, especially since I graduated from there =) However, parking on Jackson and State is near impossible unless you want to pay $30/hour.
A lot of our dishes are in fact catered to Western folk (read Americans) ...
I just got word from my friend that we can use his pool hall to nerd out on keyboards, and eat Chinese food, and play pool afterwards. Any interest?
It's called Golden Cue on the north side, Montrose and Kimball.

Someone needs to organize an east coast event. I already told ekw808 I'd be there if one was being held in NYC =)
Start another interest check thread! =)
I'm hoping to have a prototype of my teensy project ready by Saturday!
What happened to your forum DangWang????
I see it...
Thanks fellas
I think it's still there. Can anyone else verify? lol
I'll bring some brews - that place looks ghetto fabulous. You can take a virtual tour with google maps - dibs on the neo-geo machine

I assume somebody is bringing a laptop? I was not planning on it...
I think my friend who's running the pool hall that day, usually brings his laptop. I don't own one, so I couldn't bring one =)
You guys are lucky. I won't be tere for the meet up. I'll be training in hot ass weather in Nevada ten shipping out to Afghanistan. Would have been cool to meet you all.Thank you very much. I appreciate what you do! Also, is anyone else excited?

Hmm...Raffle tickets for your KMAC? LOL!
AWESOME!!! super jelly! too many things to make cohesive comments, BUT where'd the beta makeymakey come from?
+ Everyone was great and nice to place faces. By the way, now that we are out of there - I feel more comfortable saying this: Ski's girl is HOT! (You are lucky dude...)
+ Loved the Apple Extended 1 & 2 boards - can't wait for the Matias new switch!
DanGWanG is the man!Indeed Ski's Girl is HOT. You should've told me that you liked the Green's so much, I had a bucket of them that I would've traded/sold.
+ The food was excellent - I didn't want to stop eating. The stuffed buns were crack.

+ The KMAC is the boss. Best stabilizer action EVER. Unless I can get a fullsize Korean keyboard like this I'm probably done with Cherry.
+ People who think the 55g Topre is stiff are insane or have vaginas for fingers
+ Loved the Apple Extended 1 & 2 boards - can't wait for the Matias new switch!
+ Green Linear Alps (Zenith) are the $**T!
I would buy a Korean custom with ALPS switches.
She doesn't have to know.I would buy a Korean custom with ALPS switches.
Not if your gf has anything to say about it :)
LOL! we should move to Dan's subforum to post all this stuff. I hate having to sift through the pages. :PShe doesn't have to know.I would buy a Korean custom with ALPS switches.

no, the 356 cannot be had in alps flavor. kawa doesnt know what he's talking about.Awwwwww..... I got all exited :(
there is one board that was a hybrid mx/alps board. pk3 i think it was called.
I like how most of the keyboards on that pool table are of the vintage persuasion.
Can too! BAM! (http://geekhack.org/index.php?action=profile;u=19041) Look in his signature!

Trent brought that =) We had a live band going....of chimes, cowbells and all sorts of other sounds....

I really like that Peerless, very smooth. Were those AT you said Trent? Also, got my Leopold working. :) Bad solder connection from Leopold, I think.
AHHHHH I CAN'T BELIEVE I MISSED THISsadly i missed it as well due to work...
Trent, i3oiler and I have thought about making this event more often than anually. We may have a winter meetup, or early Spring in 2013. Or...even earlier if people really want lolwhoot earlier plz. i can drive down, might give me a reason to stop at mitsuwa again too

If we do one in Madison I may be Abe to drive myself. Chicago driving was not going to fly for my dad. Heh. Either way we should plan for January or so, so thay we can spend all our Christmas cash. ;)
We should do a Madison meet up ever other time :Di know people there for school so might not be as bad.

You have no idea how funny that is and actually puts things in perspective. Give yourself another 15 years and you will realize that the money flows the other direction around Christmas, that being OUT of your pocket. AHHHH, wouldn't it be great to be 18 (or so) again.
We should do a Madison meet up ever other time :D
Now works but it's kinda close to the Chicago meeting. Maybe sometime after January?we set a date for the next chicago meeting?

A bit OT but is their anyone in the Chicagoland/Wisconsin area that can let me test drive their HHKB for 10-15 minutes?i have a hhkb and 45g 87UB you can test.
I think my future is in cupped rubber.
I have an HHKB Pro JP you can testi wouldnt mind testing that.
i3oiler: Would I be able to come to that one? I don't want to get booted out for not being over 21... -_-

Trent, i3oiler and I have thought about making this event more often than anually. We may have a winter meetup, or early Spring in 2013. Or...even earlier if people really want lol
I started a thread for the next one since I figured I could organize it. I have yet to see interest in that thread. Also, Dan, may you bring those dumpling/meat things no matter? I'd love to get an order of those again!
i agree!who wouldnt? I say the more meets the better!
May I ask what branch you are in and where you are deployed to ?Trent, i3oiler and I have thought about making this event more often than anually. We may have a winter meetup, or early Spring in 2013. Or...even earlier if people really want lol
Have it in the Spring. I'll be back early March from deployment.
I asked Deck if somehow we could host it at their HQ / or just get a group tour and they said no.Cherry is also in the Kenosha area (not the keyboard distribution center, to my knowledge) but they may host us. :)
I'm not being bitter but I get the feeling the current Legend line only exists to boost their MOQ component orders for TG3 products.
Is this thing going to happen? And will it merge with the Midwest meet up that was discussed in a separate thread?
Also, I'm in Indianapolis but I'll clear my calendar for a date if we get one.
If Dan wants to host me at his place I'll come down
What poo poo heads... :(Did you call up Deck, Dante?
I called Deck months ago. They not only won't host us they are not fond of people taking photos of the place if you stop in to try boards at normal business hours.
Maybe if you were a TG3 customer buying backlit keyboards for hundreds of squad cars they would be more positive; they are none too interested in collectors/enthusiasts.

Lets get this rolling. I have a huge break right now and can come anytime (pretty much).same!
Just throwing this out there ...
What about Mechanical Keyboards / Tiger Imports in Tennessee? A little further and Unicomp in Kentucky is also a possibility.

Hells to the yeah! Being based in Nashville, I'm totally in for a tour like this.
Been to Tiger Imports, but those guys are great and would be big fun. Happy to coordinate too.
Kentucky is not exactly "Chicagoland". :)i would have to agree with that.
Sorry if I participated in hijacking the thread. I guess I got too excited. :-X
I've suggested Madison or something outside mad-town
im cool with wisconsin someone just need to set something up

What are you waiting for though? Doesn't seem like anyone wants to plan it =)Maybe I can plan it during my spring break. I am a bit cramped with finals at the moment. I want to do so much on GH, yet my parents put the ka-bosh on it all when I ask since it's a "big project". Ugh.
