Title: Chicagoland Meetup
Post by: DanGWanG on Mon, 23 July 2012, 11:10:28
Good morning all,

I was wondering if there was any interest in doing a Chicagoland meet up.  Maybe grab some beers, nerd out on keyboards, and what have you.

I know a few members are already interested:  i3oilermaker, Trent, and jcrouse (not from Chicago, but more than willing to make a drive)

My family also owns a restaurant here in Chinatown, so maybe we grab some Chinese food too.

Let me know =)

Thanks,
Dan

Somebody should do this in nyc also "not thread jacking" :D

For reference, here's my family restaurant's website:  www.moonpalacerestaurant.com

Also, YUIOP is a Chicagoan too!  And obviously everyone/anyone feel free to bring significant others, friends who are interested in keyboards (I'll be bringing a friend of mine who isn't on GH), etc.

i3, you should put this link in your sig like I am!

^Haha, anytime man.

There's apparently a new huge arcade place also in Wicker Park, if anyone is into arcade console gaming :)

Well obviously yes since I suggested this idea to you  :P

Depending on the group, we may be able to host the event at the ignite network gaming lounge in the city.  Here is their URL: http://www.ignitenetwork.com/ (http://www.ignitenetwork.com/)

And a flashy youtube video:
http://youtu.be/kYqiWpbhiK4 (http://youtu.be/kYqiWpbhiK4)

I talked to one of the managers.  Depending on the size, the cost would be $0 or if there is more than a certain amount of people there is a charge of $5 per hour.  Given the atmosphere I think it'd suit very well for the event, but we'd have to talk to em.

I'm just a little south in Champaign. I could make the trip up if it the meetup was on the weekend.
I can bring enough of Dans favorite treats for everyone.

I'd prefer not to get my favorite treat involved since not everyone is cool with that, and I don't want any awkward tensions =)

Maybe we can coordinate something afterwards.

As you stated Dan, I will try and make it but need to know the day soon. I will take a vacation day on Friday or Monday depending. I can't bring friends because I don't have any.

A suggestion would be to make a list of what items the attendees plan on bringing and a list of what they would like to see, for instance I know I3oilermaker wants to try a topre board. I'll bring a 10th anniversary 55g. Just a thought. Mark me down 75% sure. It's a 6 or 7 hour drive but I love Chicago.

Also, weekend sounds like the ideal timeframe for everyone.

I'm thinking sometime mid-August.  Let me know which weekends work best for people:

1.  August 18 or 19
2.  August 25 or 26

Or if you guys have another suggestion, let me know =)

I think it'd also be worthy of us to list some things we own so we know what people want to see.

I'll start:  KMAC, IBM SSK Bolt modded, Filco Reds, Filco ergo-Clears (lube and non-lubed), Realforce AE 55g, Realforce 45g, HHKB Pro JP 45g, Cherry G80-xxxx (can't remember but it's a POS with browns), KBC Poker with treble's case and 62g PCB mounted Blues, TypeNow Solid (if it isn't sold by then, or if someone wants to buy locally)

---
@Dante:  We have a wide variety of food for your normal American as well as some selective home style dishes.  But I assure you, our Orange Chicken is the bomb.  Also, regarding Galloping Ghost, apparently that place is owned by my girlfriend's, friend's husband or something.  It's a bit far, but if everyone would prefer to go somewhere like that, I'm down for the drive.

I vote downtown - especially if jcrouse is coming all the way in to see Chi-Town it would be a shame to throw him out in Brookfield.

I would love to try a ergo-clear!

I don't have too much to bring other then caps to trade
Title: Re: Chicagoland Meetup
Post by: DanGWanG on Tue, 24 July 2012, 11:03:21
My vote is, if we can coordinate ignite network to host an event for us, I'll bring in catered food from my restaurant.  That way we can be locked down to 1 place and not have to worry about moving around.  Also, if they're BYOB...even better.  Otherwise I'm sure we can find a local bar in the area.

I will have a 55g there an mx mini with lubed and stickered browns a few CAD design ideas to discuss and lots of caps.

My rule, no talking money in the presence of the chicas. My wife has no clue what I have spent and I don't really want to have a going out of business sale just yet.

Either weekend works for me and I don't care about location. We usually stay at a la quinta In Hinsdale and take the train into town.

My wife is Mexican so I completely understand how we Americanize everything and call it authentic. Her family laughs at us.

I hear there is some pretty shady cap trading that takes place in these smoky back rooms of Chinese restaurants.

I am guessing we will get together on a Saturday. If that's the case, my wife and I will be going to Brazzaz's for dinner Friday night if anyone wants to join us. If we meet on a Sunday, we will be eating there the night before, Saturday evening. It usually gets pretty crowded so I will be making reservations as soon as a date is firmed up. If your interested PM me or reply here. I'll take care of calling in the reservation, just need a number.

Oh yeah, bring your appetite and some coin, it's a little pricey and ya can't pay in keycaps there.

I'm going to be taking a train in too.  If you want to split a cab at Union Station let me know.

If everyone was able to organize a time to all go there, I can bring my SUV and pile everyone in at the same time haha.

And DangWang for your reference I'd be able to bring the following boards: IBM Model M (Both Silver Tag, Blue Label, Grey Label, and my unicorn vomit SSK), FK-2000, FK-8000, Fujitsu Peerless (and a couple other Peerless switch boards like a Tandy, Panasonic and Epson), A Zenith Data Systems Yellow ALPS boards (the one that goes BEEPBEEPBEEPBEEP), AEKII, and FK-9000.

even though rubber domes are taboo...........dell quiet key for what it's worth ain't that bad. i have one and am pretty fond of it (considering). you should sell in classifieds. i know there is a gooder one and a not so good one; china or thailand- can't remember? i don't have mine here to check. i took it apart, cleaned and modded.

BTW: would anyone be interested in sampling a Thailand made Dell Quietkey?  I've been thinking of giving it away.

Also depending on the "auction" (it's all crickets) I might ask the winner (if they still want it) if I can postpone shipping the Wyse w/ Vintage Cherry Blacks so that everyone here can try it.

Sorry I didn't see this post, I haven't been checking this thread that much.  I will contact them about the day, but I honestly think that having it at your family's restaurant would be 1: more delicious and 2: more delicious 3: probably more space at your location, ignite said they'd be able to quarter off a small table but any more than 4ish people and in my personal opinion I think it'd be considered a bit cramped -- Either way I will email them about this right now, I'll let you know what surfaces.

^ totally agree with this.  Recently got a Topre switch in the mail from MrInterface on Deskthority.  The thing is a rubber dome there is no denying it...  A spring underneath doesn't put Topre's in the mechanical switch bracket.  You can get similar (and better feel) with a Cherry MX red with 50A-R o-rings from WASD keyboards!

But that is neither here nor there in regards to this event :)

If it's a democracy I vote for Dan's familys place also. Parking may be better and we would probably have more space. I would be much more comfortable lugging 5 or 6 keyboards into a familiar environment as opposed to putting that out all over a table in an unfamiliar public place, but thats just my thought. Plus, you can never go wrong with Chinese food.

The thing with going to my restaurant is, if my parent's knew about this keyboard hobby I have...they would kill me.  I'd rather cater the food in if possible =)  Or discuss/play around with keyboards elsewhere first, before having dinner/meal at my place, lol.

BTW, I'm not a kid.  I'm 26 (turning 27 next month) and have a full time job, etc etc.  But my parent's still have a guiding influence on me somehow...

I can accept and understand that. As I stated early on it the thread, if the wifes / girlfriends are present, lets keep the monetary / value discussions to a minimum or there may be a mass sale on Sunday evening, the likes of which have never been seen before at GH.

BTW ... you are a kid. I probably have illegitimate kids runing around a hell of a lot older than you are.

I'm in coordination with one of mkawa's friend to assist us with finding an undisturbed location for us to discuss keyboards.  It's likely that, as a result of acquiring this location, we'll need to push the date back a little.

The bonuses with pushing this date back would most certainly yield us a good location (University Village, UIC Campus; southwest loop) in addition to potentially yielding more people as well (i.e. KL).

Updates to follow in the next day or so...

Post by: Trent on Mon, 06 August 2012, 02:55:34
So any other suggestions for the actual discussing of keyboards meetup portion? =)

Well I'll be bringing the following boards in my nifty keyboard boxes:

Also, I have a lot of extra boards from my massive purchase (lookup the word 'pallets' in deskthority) so I will be raffling off a peerless keyboard and potentially a terminal IBM Model M, it all depends on whether or not I can find it in my insanely messy garage...

Don't flame me for this but I am going to make an incredibly stereotypical assumption: can I assume that since your family owns a Chinese restaurant that your parents are in fact Asian, which would in fact make you Asian?  Because I have in fact heard horror stories of Asian parents being involved in their child's lives.  And catering?  Heck yes.  I've already decided what I want on the menu  :P

I'm seeing if we can maybe push this back a little.

While Ignite is closed on the weekend of the 18th, I am sure that they would be open to hosting it some other weekend if we do indeed postpone it.  I'd like to decide on a specific time and day before I pitch it to them again in an email.

And tipo33 don't know it yet but he is going, so add him to the list  :P

@Trent -- For ignite, can we host something with roughly 10-12 people though?  You mentioned earlier it was like max 4 people or something, or maybe I'm bad at reading.

We could do 10-12 people but it is going to be really cramped.  They are a gaming place and wouldn't be really happy if we took up space that is dedicated to gaming stations.  It is hard to explain but once you walk in and look at the place you'd understand.  They don't really have a space for stuff like this, we'd be setting up at a table with 5 tall chairs and a small counter with a fold up table I can bring.

Edit: but again I have to ask them.  Given all of this communication maybe they just aren't a good fit.  I think maybe emporium would be a good option, I looked at their website and reviews and it looked like a sweet place.

I'm reaching out to mkawa's friend one last time to see if we can push a meeting room to Sept 1st or 8th.  If we can, I'd like to setup shop there for a few reasons:

1)  Alcohol is fine, but I get worried around people with liquid and expensive keyboards.
2)  Ideally, I'd like to cater food in instead of travelling to 2 different places and with a meeting room that'd be perfect.  We can always go to the bar afterwards when keyboards are out of the picture.
3)  Meeting rooms tend to have more space =)

My Plan B was to reach out to the staff at Emporium to see if we can setup shop there =)

Since I am far removed from Chicago and haven't been involved in the planning I don't want to complain, so I'll call it a suggestion. The first thing that comes to my mind is one of those rooms that you rent for birthday parties a Chuckies Cheese. Maybe even a small unused room and a small hotel, La Quinta or Ramada Inn. Just a couple of thoughts. I would have no problem throwing in $10 for a comfortable venue where we have lots of room.

I have not been to Emporium, but my understanding is it is a bar, and probably pretty crowded and loud on a weekend.

Sounds like a lot of fun, but not a good venue for trading, trying out boards, talking nerdy etc...

I've been to Emporium! It is indeed a bar, but it's equal parts bar and arcade. However, the setting is as you would expect either to be: dark, loud, and crowded. Might not be the best place.

That would be awesome if you guys had your meet at Chuckie Cheese  :D

But in seriousness, the idea of renting a small conference room would likely be a good idea if there is going to be 10+ people and maybe add $5 a person or something. And then you'd have none of the strange looks for everyone else in the place =)

OK, I just called the La Quinta where the wife and I stay. It is in Willibrook. I know that's 20 minutes ouside of Chicago but this is just an exmple. They have a room that easily holds 10 to 12 people and 3 hours time is $50 and 4 hours is $60. I say we do something similar, where we can pull out cars up, unload and have a geekfest in comfort and privacy.

Thoughts?

Title: Re: Chicagoland Meetup

There is a pay lot that they will validate for an hour.  Other than that the streets are a bit of a free-for-all.  Depending on the day, time, and weather it ranges from not bad to horrific.

Well then, I'll throw this out ... How about the La Quinta in Willibrook. It is a 25 minute drive down 55 from the center of Chicago. I suggest this not knowing where people actually live, other that Brad, whom I beileve to be just north of the loop. Anyways, if I'm nuts, just say so but this sounds ideal. Also, you guys closer are more familiar, find a comprable small hotel chain about 10 minutes outside of town and see what thay have. It has been my prior experience that most have a room for rent.

I think your barking up the wrong tree. That is not their business. You will have problems fing who to talk to, who the decision maker is and setting it up. Just go to someone who is in the business of renting out a room for a business gathering, like a hotel chain. Am I crazy? How difficult is this.
Title: Re: Chicagoland Meetup
Post by: DanGWanG on Mon, 06 August 2012, 17:48:46
It is difficult when you are talking about the City of Chicago.  A city run by mobsters and profiteers.  Renting out a place for cheap from a local hotel chain like Hilton, Aqua, or any other hotel chains in downtown is asking for a lot of money.  Not to mention Parking.

I'm looking at local colleges and libraries in the South Loop because its a lot less populated, close to downtown and Chinatown.  You're welcome to help =)

We make some bomb orange chicken, despite how westernized it is.  Still a delicious dish, imo.

Do you have pork blood cake or any congee specials?  I'm sure the orange chicken is great - its just not often when the opportunity comes up to try "off the menu" items that might make most white people cringe.

I'll travel anywhere but ideally if it's going to be in Chicago it won't be too expensive to get to by cab from Union Station.

A lot of our dishes are in fact catered to Western folk (read Americans), but we have a variety of Shanghainese dishes (since our restaurant is Shanghai cuisine).  This includes, but not limited to:  Soup Dumplings (aka xiao long bao), dry pot stickers, pork & chive stirfry in sweet soy, kaufu (like a sweet tofu thing), roasted pork shoulder, and some other things I don't know the American names to.  Some other higher priced items that we can obtain are dungeonous crabs in salt and pepper, 2-3 lb. lobsters in ginger soy, prawns in garlic and vermicelli, and tons of off-menu items.

We don't typically carry congee and blood soup dishes because those are more 'home' style dishes and typically frighten the American customer.  That doesn't mean we don't ever have it.  Sometimes it's seasonal, sometimes we made it at home and bring it to the restaurant, sometimes we just have it.

I like them vintage blacks quite a bit, I have 2 boards with them both from the mid 80's one is pcb and the other is plate mount with model F layout. They don't feel quite as dampened on the pcb more bounce on the upstroke I think but could easily be due to the amount of use they have each seen as well.

I will bring my Model M 122, my Leopold with Clears, and my Zenith Data Systems with Green ALPS, as well as my AIKON project and my bucket of green ALPS switches. I believe that's all that I have, but I'll check at home to be sure. C'ya there! :D

You don't need to bring a cue, just some of these other guys seem a little more serious =)  The pool hall has plenty of public use cues, so no worries there.

How young are you?  You only need to be over 18 (and honestly that's a pretty liberal rule) to go.  This place doesn't serve alcohol or anything, however, it is BYOB if anyone planned on it.

If an event was to be held in Boston I would gladly go, but I'm not sure about NYC... I would have to take a train into NYC if the event was there; no way in hell I would drive into the city.

I'm bringing some Orange Chicken (spicy), Chinese Sausage fried rice, "AA" vegetable in garlic, Shanghai spring rolls (home made), Shanghai pan-friend buns (home made) and I'm going to find something special to bring for dante.  Maybe this home dish that I always ate:  pork + chive + bean curd, stir fried in sweet soy.

There's a lot of other things I'd recommend if you plan on going for dinner in-house.  I know mistakemistake is going today, so he'll have the pleasure of eating there =)  Unfortunately for us, we have to eat 20-30 minute old food =(

+ Everyone was great and nice to place faces.  By the way, now that we are out of there - I feel more comfortable saying this: Ski's girl is HOT!  (You are lucky dude...)

+ The KMAC is the boss.  Best stabilizer action EVER.  Unless I can get a fullsize Korean keyboard like this I'm probably done with Cherry.

+ People who think the 55g Topre is stiff are insane or have vaginas for fingers

+ Loved the Apple Extended 1 & 2 boards - can't wait for the Matias new switch!

+ Green Linear Alps (Zenith) are the $**T!
Indeed Ski's Girl is HOT. You should've told me that you liked the Green's so much, I had a bucket of them that I would've traded/sold.

that is wrong IIRC. 356 is only cherry flavor.

I've been corrected, there were 2 ever made.

AWESOME!!! super jelly! too many things to make cohesive comments, BUT where'd the beta makeymakey come from?

Trent brought that =)  We had a live band going....of chimes, cowbells and all sorts of other sounds....

Hehe yeah.  I paid for one in May, and luckily it came in the mail this morning, brought it cause its keyboard related.

I like how most of the keyboards on that pool table are of the vintage persuasion.

I brought like 10 keyboards, only one of the wasn't vintage  (KBT Race) haha

I would buy a Korean custom with ALPS switches.

Not if your gf has anything to say about it :)
She doesn't have to know.

Yeah, its not like you paid $27 for the Adesso I ordered for you on eBay and then picked up $30 worth of boxes at ma haus right after the meeting :D  --  I've gotta say tho, it was a pretty modern transaction since I got to finally use my Square reader for something haha.

EDIT: And since I had my massive haul of fujitsu peerless when I bought the four pallets of keyboards (see deskthority for my thread) I brought one to give away to whoever wanted it/had the most modest keyboard collection.  I gave it to SmallFry and now he has another to his collection.  Hopefully he will enjoy it since I have about 14 others just sitting my garage rotting, not too many people seem to like the peerless switch I've tried to sell a couple and they haven't panned out as well as I have thought.

You sir are the only person I have ever found to enjoy the peerless switch aside from a non-keyboard friend of mine haha.  Since I have so many boards I also have LOADS of spare parts and keycaps for those.  Been meaning to post something in the classifieds about selling scrap parts for em in case anyone finds one in poor shape.  And yeah they are AT so just throw a PS/2 converter on them and you are good to go.  It should be working all fine and dandy, if it isn't then I have loads of spares in the garage to swap with (some are the fancy peerless too like the Panasonic Business Partner and Epson keyboards).

You have no idea how funny that is and actually puts things in perspective. Give yourself another 15 years and you will realize that the money flows the other direction around Christmas, that being OUT of your pocket. AHHHH, wouldn't it be great to be 18 (or so) again.

Make it the Midwest GH meet in Madison! Its still a bit of a drive from MN (~5hrs), but that probably is a close as it gets to the middle between MN/IL/IA and still be in a bigger city.

I think something could be arranged say the weekend of November 3rd?  What does everyone think.  A couple weeks more?  The next meeting we'd go to I'd only bring one or two boards due to my collection shrinking (well hoping that it'l shrink).

Maybe the weekend after?  I think the place we were at was great, a bit far away for my tastes.  Maybe trying it at emporium would be an interesting idea, if they'd be down for it.  I know that if we wait a while, the ignite gaming lounge is actually moving to a new location that is 3x the size of their current location.  I spoke with them and this means that they'll be able to host a variety of events now.

Well if you do it in the spring time that way people can plan ahead of time and it wouldn't be so cold. We could probably have it at someone's house or somewhere we can rent like a hall or a nice big room. People would have to pitch in some $ not much though maybe $5-$10. Or someone posted that gaming room in Brookfield. As for food maybe a pot luck?

I called Deck months ago.  They not only won't host us they are not fond of people taking photos of the place if you stop in to try boards at normal business hours.

Maybe if you were a TG3 customer buying backlit keyboards for hundreds of squad cars they would be more positive; they are none too interested in collectors/enthusiasts.

If someone is between Platteville and Madison or Wausau and Madison (depends on when this is), I'd be willing to car pool.

What are you waiting for though?  Doesn't seem like anyone wants to plan it =)

Wisconsin is a bit far for me, but I might be passing through on the weekend of March 8.

If it's in Chicagoland, I could easily attend on any weekend.

Is someone in Madtown or close enough by that they could scope out a venue?

Cheers,

Maybe I can plan it during my spring break. I am a bit cramped with finals at the moment. I want to do so much on GH, yet my parents put the ka-bosh on it all when I ask since it's a "big project". Ugh.

The meet isn't too big, I think we just need someone to scope out a venue and then poll a date (and collect any fees associated with renting the venue).

Cheers,
