Title: NIB Minis - Reliable Seller

never mind, I just emailed him. Last time he was pretty good about posting a better pic. Pretty sure he will do the same again.

no. i have a blue label 1391401 made by ibm. from the label it is clear that this is not made by lexmark.

its probably not helping that we keep drawing attention to the minis in threads like these, lol.

we should talk up the virtues of the regular m instead, even the prices out a bit ;)

So who wants to praise the unappreciated old numeric keypad?

advantages:
-really nice to type in numbers.
-if you've got numbers to type, cant beat having the numpad
-yup, whehter you're doing excel spreadsheets or simply typing in your phone number or visa card, that numpad is there to serve you
-if you're a righty, its right there on the right side of the board
-can double as a pop-up calculator with a simple autohotkey script (as mine does: when I hit the numlock button, calc.exe pops up; when i hit numlock again, calc disappears).
-yup, nuthin' beats it for numbers. Much more convenient than the shift-scrolllock nonsense on the mini.

It makes the keyboard heavier, thus making it more slide resistant.

excellent point itln :) I am enjoying my slide-less M, thats for sure. The regular M weighs about a pound more than the mini -- I can type as rapidly as I like secure in the knowledge that incidents of slide will be rare or non existent.

I either mouse for extended periods of time or type for extended periods of time. I don't reach back and forth much. That, and I am a big keyboard shortcut kind of user. I prefer not to reach for the mouse no matter how close it is.

ya, what itnl said. I too am a huge keyb shortcut guy, so I rarely reach for the mouse no matter where it is.

In addition to keyb shortcuts, I even have rudimentary mouse control on my keyb anyway. All in my ginormous autohotkey script. I rarely leave home row for anything.

Except of course to use that amazingly convenient numeric keypad.

The Model M has built its reputation because it is compared to rubber dome keyboards and not other mechanical keyboards. This is because buckling springs was prominently manufactured & marketed at a watershed point in computing unlike the other mechanical key switches. Of course if your only two choices are rubber dome or "clicky' BS (which are the two most well known key switches amongst general consumers), then BS is going to look good.

Newer key switches are JUST as durable (~20+ million key stroke spec). They too are not mushy like worn rubber domes so in this sense they are consistently responsive to your finger action. Newer switches also provide feedback but not at the cost of a ridiculously high actuation force. Use a brown cherry or a Topre and I guarantee that your chances of RSI will be significantly reduced. $100 + is a lot of money and better spent on superior, improved boards (which do exist - we manufacture more than just rubber domes today).

So one may wonder that after all this BS bashing (which I've come to do after being enlightened in this forum), why I have 3 IBMs myself? Purely for nostalgic reason. My daily driver is the Compaq.

Save that money and buy yourself a better keyboard (unless you have issues like me and prefer to collect antiques as opposed to using them).

I think he was just saying that each individual ebay listing should be in its own thread; i dont think he was saying there cant be extended conversations within the thread itself. Breaking out into fights within a thread is a gh tradition after all ;)
