Title: Thanks To Majestouch For Bringing Us Blue Cherry Filcos!!
Post by: o2dazone on Sat, 13 June 2009, 14:14:24
While I don't like to figuratively BLOW any vendor, Elitekeyboards.com does good work. I've gotten free upgraded shipping from them, Red ESC key with another purchase, and continually great prices and extremely fast shipping. Honestly, if I was interested in a product that Elitekeyboards didn't stock, but intended to in the future, I would probably just wait it out until I could buy it from them, as I did with the HHK. And good thing too, because I saved $30 doing so lol

Yes, thank you Majestouch! It was great timing too since I was almost about to settle for Brown Cherries. I reaaaally wanted a Blue Cherry board though, and then I saw the newsletter! Plus, they had the blank keycaps for it. I can't wait for it to arrive. I'm so impatient though... this is gonna be terrible until it gets here.

I ordered a Blue Cherry Filco yesterday. I've been looking forward to it for quite some time.

Majestouch has definitely done a terrific job.

Yes, Majestouch is great :D

I was honestly expecting to see a hefty markup on the blue cherry boards, partly because he knows that a bunch of us are waiting in anticipation, partly because he's the only one that sells them in the US, and partly to try and make up for any people that said they wanted one but aren't going through with the purchase. But nope, they're priced exactly the same as the brown cherry models! Can't beat that.

Thank you for being one of the few businesses around that still cares about what the customer wants, and for putting in the effort and taking the risk to get these boards for us.

You know Majestouch, you should try and get the Filco boards onto newegg.com. There are a ton of computer geeks that don't know about any product that isn't listed on that site, and you're very likely to get a ton of sales just from them.

Yeah, rub it in.  I would have saved almost $60 on my 87U.  But I consider mine special because it is SN 90300207A.  Maybe it was #207 off the line.  Maybe.

LOL my 87U SN is 90300036A I guess that makes mine younger :) I wonder if that is why crescent-shop charged me so much for it.

Now on to the Blue cherry Filco's why OH Why did they have to come in when I can't order one! My wallet got emptied by my new Truck and now I can't get one of the keyboards I want most :( I really hope he rat holes a few so in a month or so I can still get one. But I really bet the GeekHackers will buy them all up before I can get one :(

Thank you for the blue cherry filcos majestouch!! One question though - do you have any idea if they will be releasing a full-sized keyboard with blue cherrys? I'd prefer one of those - however if it doesn't seem likely I'll pull the trigger for a tenkeyless. Thanks!

Thank you Majestouch!

I ordered my Blue Cherry Filco from them yesterday and I can't wait to receive it! I remember ripster and I had the same thought that the board was going to cost somewhere around $130-$140 + shipping, but Elitekeyboards decided to not charge us the hyped prices.

BTW, I'm hoping they will send me a red escape key because that will make my board look mighty sick =P

Also, I sent them a couple of questions last night at 12 a.m. about the LED colors and W,A,S,D kit and they RESPONDED! It felt like they had 24 hour service or something. That's a plus right there =)

EDIT:

Oh btw, which blue cherry did you guys order? I ordered the blank one =)

Also, has anyone tried out that 'zero' tenkeyless yet? How does that one compare to like a AT101W?

Blank, of course. I know where all of the keys are already, but it will look neat aesthetically.

Ordered a blue cherry with printed caps as soon as I got the newsletter the other day.  Of course majestouch is probably going to announce a 104 key version next week and I'll be shooting myself in the foot, but oh wells.

Yeah I kinda think I may go for a Realforce 87 rather than a 10kl filco. I only use one damn key on the 10k pad but man is it handy. So many kbs!

The End key. And for he life of me I can't find another key to replace it. I use the "other" end key for something else.

Now I'm really confused!

Anyhow, can you use KeyTweak to reprogram the Scroll Lock to do what you need?
Title: Thanks To Majestouch For Bringing Us Blue Cherry Filcos!!
Post by: ironcoder on Sun, 14 June 2009, 08:25:47
Thanks. I don't run Winbloze so that won't help. And on some of my systems (BSD notably) I actually need the scroll lock to be a scroll lock- but a software solution that only runs in X might be ok. The great thing about the End key is it's on the end. If I hit the key next to the scroll lock by mistake, I could lose a lot of work. Maybe I'll try using one of those stupid Windows keys if my systems will recognize it.
Title: Thanks To Majestouch For Bringing Us Blue Cherry Filcos!!
Post by: ch_123 on Sun, 14 June 2009, 08:34:17
Well, the filcos have an end key too... Does the software you use in BSD not give an "Are you sure?" warning if you hit Delete by mistake?
Title: Thanks To Majestouch For Bringing Us Blue Cherry Filcos!!
Post by: ironcoder on Sun, 14 June 2009, 08:52:08
There are two ends. I use both of them:

Insert Home PageUp
Delete End PageDown

and then on the 10K there is the End key on the #1.

In BSD you need scroll lock on the console. The possible data loss comes if I hit the Pause/Break key in an X session on any system, not just BSD.

I'll have to try the Winbloze keys and see if it works. Thanks again.

What about a seperate numpad? One of those and a filco is still much cheaper than a Realforce.

Thank you Manyak, I spent some time working in Japan, and I learned that the word "service" is a word and idea they learned from America a long time ago. Since then, this word has come to mean nothing in America; heck I think waiters want 18% gratuity these days, then give chase out to the parking lot if you don't pony up. Newegg shipped me a HDD a couple months back that was sitting BARE on the bottom of the box; some packing peanuts and a torn tunnel of bubble wrap with half the bubbles popped rested gently on top of my precious HDD. GRRrrr...packing peanuts...Also, their pricing structure for shipping is a profit scheme I liken to shady ebayers that live in a van down by the river (http://www.hulu.com/watch/4183/saturday-night-live-down-by-the-river). The only thing they got going for them is that they the took a hint at the oh-so-obvious void in the web retail electronics business about 7 years back and hired some reasonably astute programmers to maintain their website. While I'd welcome selling more keyboards, I, fortunately or unfortunately, have too much perspective to sit back and watch other people continue "business as usual." In fact, Diatec products wouldn't have distributorship outside of Asian countries at all if they thought I was your typical used-car dealer; so I'm finding the place in the market for Diatec products  with quite a bit of conservativism.

BTW, great writeup over on overclock.net!

On a side not, I was pleasantly surprised that the blank version did not have a price premium over the normal one, or any of the tenkeyless boards for that matter.  Don't really see this behavior from vendors anymore!

Got mine in this morning, and have been typing all day on it.
Coming from the mushy world of membrane keyboards, I've been lurking this forum for a few weeks now and was seriously considering a Scorpius M10.

Glad I threw that out the window and jumped on the blue cherry tenkeyless.
Looks just like the pictures; LED indicators are a good brightness, and the build quality is superb. Had an Enermax Aurora Micro laptop-style and thought I'd been spoiling myself.. but this, this is a new level of awesome.

I could take pics if you all would like, but all you'd see is the keyboard from the website sitting on my desk :). I'm sure Ripster's review will be much more valuable to you all.

btw- second day shipping is $20 vs the standard $11. Worth it for me. Clicky, tactile, and my fingers thank me.

By the way.. I ordered the one with blank keys (the regular one was out of stock). By looking at the pictures in elitekeyboards.com, the regular FKBN87M/EB looks shiny and blacker than the FKBN87M/NPEK, which looks like it had a black matte finish on the whole kb, not just the keys.

Do you know if the two really look just the same except for the letters on the FKBN87M/EB?

I couldnt see much of a difference (aside from the lack of lettering) but the lettering on the lettered ones supposedly has a problem with fading off and becoming shiny, so if the blank ones are of a different finish, perhaps they might be more durable?

The lettering doesn't come off, just the coating.

NP - odd that you said the Blue Cherry Lettered keyboard was out of stock.  I just checked it and it seems to be in stock  (http://elitekeyboards.com/products.php?pid=fkbn87mceb)(added it to cart).

No it's the Brown Cherry Filco I was talking about! The guy told me in an email that the lettered one was out of stock, so I picked the Otaku one :)

Give it about 3-4 weeks.  You will start to notice the wear on oft-used keys like R, S, T, L, N, and E.  You can wash your hands all you want.  It's coming off.  It happened on my ABSs and the Filco.

I wont be using it if it makes shiny spots. I hate how that looks.
No need to worry about the letters as I ordered the blank one.
I guess any key does become shiny after a while no matter how it is made.
My HH has a spot just starting on the space bar.

Seems silly to make this coating that only lasts a few weeks? Whats the point of it?

No.  Those keys have textured plastic.  They won't go shiny for quite some time (they will, eventually, with enough use).  Costar used smooth plastic keys with a matte and sort of textured coating (think of a clear coat on a car).  Since you are touching the keys with your fingers (at least I hope you are), the oils from your skin break down the coating and, eventually, wear it away.  Since the coating is more ***ile than plastic, it doesn't take near as long for it to wear away.  You can wash you hands all you want, but you will always have some sort of oils on your skin, so wearing off the coating is inevitable.

When majestouch gets the blank keycaps in, those won't be coated, so they will be shiny from the start (I assume). I am going to replace my caps with those, and then they will all be equally shiny. When the caps go shiny, it's not like a mirror finish, it's still pretty matte. It's just not quite as matte as the keys with the coating intact. It's not something you really see unless you are studying the keys.

Yes, the blank Filco will have the coating. According to majestouch, they spray the coating on the keycaps after the caps have been mounted to the switches. Since the blank caps majestouch will be getting are straight off the production line and haven't been mounted, they will not have the coating. To me, that's an odd process (mount caps, then spray), but they are the manufacturing experts. I would have thought it would have been easier to spray them off the switches.

If you look in the original "Filcos in the USA" thread (I think that's the title), majestouch shows a pic of his personal keyboard. In that pic, you can see a little of the shinyness, but it's kinda hard to see. I only noticed it, because I saw the same thing on my ABSs.

I can't see the reasoning behind Filco using a coating that wears away so fast and yet still use it as an advertised feature of the board.

What's funny about this discussion is that we are talking about plastics here. When I talk "well made" to my Dad he says METAL baby!

I would love to have a keyboard made from anodized aluminum.  The keys would never go shiny then.  They would have a nice grippy feel, too.

I often wonder if the type and thickness of the keycap plastic chosen dictate what other process can be applied to the plastic; i.e. how much physical texture can be created. If you look closely at the surface of a Realforce key, you'll see they have a physical texture to them, but it differs slightly not only from key to key but from board to board, so I think this is not a simple process. However, even physical texture will wear down over time. I think the coated texture on my 3+ year old FILCO has worn gracefully; slower than some others report, but everyone has differing amounts of oil/dirt/roughness/fingernails at their fingertips. And unless you shine a bright light on my 3 year old keys, then the wear isn't obvious, it blends well.

As for blank Topre keys, blank Realforce keys don't look to be available, but HHKB will be.

When you look at the keys side by side, the Topre key has thicker more opaque plastic and a nice texture, but then again it comes with a keyboard that has a NASA price tag :)

I think the lightweight plastic used for FILCO keys compliment Cherry MX switches. Anything heavier would probably dull the tactility and fast action, but then I'm biased as always... :llama:

to me the filco doesn't sound or feel substantially different than the das, but then again, i no longer have the das to do a back to back comparison.

the filco definitely types better.  no problems with input lag or character inversion, usb or ps/2.  n-key rollover is also fine (limited to 6 via usb).

nitpicks: the printing on the keycaps can be felt, like on the das.  and also like on the das, the longer keys (space bar, shift keys) could be stabilized a bit better.  i find that on both the filco and the das, the right shift can bind slightly if it's hit off center.  not enough to cause the key to stick, but just enough to add a little bit more resistance to the keystroke.  it's noticeable if you jump on it after using a keyboard that has very stable larger keys, like a realforce.

build quality is very good, considering it's made in taiwan.

and of course majestouch's service was excellent.

In the brown 'boards, they use a brown switch.  The only 'board I, personally, have seen a green in was the MX-11800.  Even my Cherry G80-3000 has a brown in the spacebar.

the spacebar isn't much of an issue for me.  the right shift key binds slightly sometimes if it's hit towards the left edge.  the key still goes down, but it feels different.  not really a big deal.

My Filco Clicky "Otaku" finally arrived today! I've been typing on it non-stop ever since I took it out of the box. I absolutely love everything about this keyboard! I'm so happy with the purchase. Thank you Majestouch!

I'm probably a noob by you guys' standards. I've seen some of the collections y'all are sporting lol. Sadly, I'm somewhat new to this scene in comparison. The only other mechanical keyswitch I've used regularly before getting this was a Cherry black linear. I've used Model Ms when I was a kid, but I can't remember them too much so I still consider myself a noob in this territory. However, my lack of experience may be useful for those visiting this forum in search of more information and perhaps a perspective from someone who didn't know what to expect.

First and foremost, the absolute best part about this keyboard is that I can totally trust my hands. I don't know if I can explain it properly, but I love being able to feel each keystroke and have it subconsciously register whether I pressed it accurately or not. My average typing speed is 120 WPM and at that speed I can't think about each and every keystroke. I have to rely on the feel of the 'board to let me know which key it was I messed up or if I'm typing just fine. I don't like to second guess myself when typing. It slows me down way too much.

I guess I should say that I technically have used Cherry blues before. I used a Das III for a day. I have felt them, but I don't consider myself to have actually "used" blues before this board because with the Das I had to actually think about my typing and make sure to be entirely purposeful with every keystroke since its infamous transposition problems were very evident at 120 WPM. Thankfully, the Filco 'board works exactly how it should and registers every keystroke properly so I'm finally able to just unleash the beast on the blues and feel the power. If I typo it's my typo, not the board's typo. I swear using the blues makes me type more accurately though since I can feel it better.

I know I haven't used browns, alps, etc. but I don't see how they could top these blues. They're just the right amount of force needed to actuate the key and I'm addicted to the sound. I've always loved the way certain keyboards sound and finally I have one that doesn't just thud thud thud away so boringly. Maybe I'm lucky and found my dream keyboard already. I hope I don't ever have to room with someone who can't stand the noise. I'd have to get browns I suppose, but I'm afraid of those being too light.

The Cherry blue clickies in comparison to my old Cherry black linears are like night and day for me. The blacks had a pretty tough spring in them and made my fingers tire out much quicker than any regular 'board. The linear feel of each stroke was also a bit confusing when first using it as well. It was almost impossible to trust my fingers because I didn't feel anything really. I didn't have the bump that the blues give to let me know I've actuated the key. I started bottoming out to get the feedback I needed which hurt my fingers. It sounds like I hate Cherry blacks now, but I don't. I do like them-- they're way better than rubber domes-- but going from black to blue is almost like going from rubber dome to blacks for me. Oh and now the tips of my fingers aren't black and blue... do ho ho

Oh and this board looks amazing. Even the Filco logo looks great! Thanks again Majestouch.
