Awesome, I was worried I'd get back home this week to some ultra glossy keys.
-
If those white tabs come out, it's childs play to put them back. On Cherry boards though, it's hell lol
-
Strong, ripster. Thanks for the guide on the large keys. That tripped me up when I was modding the spacebar on my old MX-11800.
This question has probably been asked and answered somwhere, but do the blank keys come with a keycap puller?
-
No, but they're only $4 now that Majestouch sells them separately. (http://elitekeyboards.com/products.php?sub=access,keycaps&pid=fkb118)
I saw that (which sort of propted the question). It's a good thing, too, since Hooleon seems to bend people over for like $15 shipping on a $4 tool (a little exaggerated, but you get the point).

Could also use for dental extractions.
On horses, maybe.

Regarding removing keys, especially the thumb keys.. this is how the Korean pros do it:

I've found key swapping on G80s to be dead easy - pull up vertically, and off they come. [strike]These white tabs are only used on the space bar, and there you can unhook the stabilizer on the PCB if needed. (The other stabilized keys have the entire stabilizer mechanics mounted on the board.) The latter may require popping the lid off, but at least with the old-style case, that's not a big problem either.[/strike] On G81s, removing the top case is pretty much required for reassembly.
On my new Alcatel / Acer board, removing and reinserting the stabilized keys is dead easy, only putting back the space bar requires some more careful aiming. I'm not sure how it would have gone without the keys above removed though.

Awesome, thanks for the help ripster!
Quick question, where do I apply the Silicone Grease to get rid of the squeaking? On the actual bar or just the plastic mounts that hold the bar?
-
An 87u I have came with white lithium grease on the left ctrl key form the factory. Just a touch of it, not much.
-
Hmm...
Would I be right in assuming that this means that the keys will last longer before going shiny?
-
Umm, no...
The keys going shiny is the wearing off of the key texture.
Unless there's a lot of coating on the original keys...
-
The coated keys have all sorts of problems with the coating wearing off REALLY quickly and going shiny.

The uncoated keycaps have the same problem. The reason why is that there is not much texture on the keycaps in the first place, so it doesn't take much to wear the plastic down. They look fantastic when brand new, but they don't last long.

Ahh, cool.
Thanks alot, I'm still a newb at this game.
