I think individual threads would be a good idea. It's a ***** to try and find stuff in a three year old thread.
-
Individual forum style threads, not replies in a megathread, would be good I think.
Wiki model is not really good for this purpose, and megathreads are useless.
-
Yeah. Agree there.
Also, I can never GET to an individual post in the megathreads if they are in the Wiki Forums. I always get dumped to OP after a search.
P.S. I was agreeing with CH123. It is safe to assume I never agree with Webwit. ;-)
I'd hate to be the one splitting the current megathreads into smaller chunks...
-
Mods, I think it's pretty obvious (but many people fail to see it). That section is for documenting mods, not discussing how to do a mod or proposing a mod, and so wiki format works well so any member can contribute info they have picked up or experiences they had doing it.
-
Yeah for sure, it's sub-optimal for largely static stuff (reviews in particular).
-
I see that the megathread still exists (which is entirely sensible) but it's been moved to a "Pictures" area, along with other pictures threads.
That's probably a good idea, but it will take time getting used to. Right now, it seems to just add time to navigating this forum when I visit.

Link for last post should just go to last post, wikiformat or not. I think it's a bug, or lazy coding (it has those Ajax tabs..). Other bugs are I can't search or go to private messages from the forum spy.
Link to the last post (and search results) should go to the appropriate post now (and not dump you to the article itself). Let me know if this now works for you.
I'll look at the forum spy later today.

These problems show that the wiki is a bit of a hack to the forum software.
Other odd places this problem might turn up:- Linking to a single post, then returning to the right place in the thread. For an example, go here: http://geekhack.org/showpost.php?p=188408&postcount=66
Now hover on the top-right link: it will link to showthread.php. Click it, and you are moved to the article screen using showwiki.php.
- Clicking on a "go to original post" button inside a quote.
For another example, go over here: http://geekhack.org/showpost.php?p=187064&postcount=3
Now click on the orange arrow next to itlnstln's nick.

It's a third party plugin.
Personally, I think it integrates quite well, and gets better with each release. (you should have seen the early releases we implemented here!)
It is what we are going to continue to use going forward, so everyone will just have to deal. :)

Megathreads are a huge pile of fail, so subforum naturally.
-
The first time I found Geekhack, I paged through the entire keyboard pictures megathread from begin to finish and felt immensely content. Now the newcomers won't have the same easy pleasure...

I suppose I am the only one that entirely dislikes the wiki plugin we have here. The only thing I hate more is the marketplace addon! It seems like I am too spoiled by mediawiki in general to bother with anything else. The other day I tried to make a summary about something on the wiki here. After two hours of google searches and reading the documentation of various vbb wiki addons I still could not figure out how to properly create and stylize a working table layout on our wiki. In the end I gave up.
Topic: Picture section is great now. I was afraid it would get a bit wild with a ton of sub posts, but webwit is making a good start for general summary topics in which everyone can post.

Mediawiki is nasty...
The wiki here is far from perfect but the fact remains that it facilitates editing by anyone which is the point.
Additionally, the marketplace bot can't get in the way because you have no direct contact with it...it simply creates a thread for every ad created. Unless you mean the classifieds addon itself?

Yes, I mean the addon itself. Its very buggy and breaks on a weekly base. Not to mention the fact that you can't edit ads, or rather the bot doesn't update them is very annoying too. Pictures included are hard to find too and everything just feels way more complicated than it would be on a normal forum base.

He did not sent me any free keys! Where did you think those DDOS attacks came from??
Well, if you are too lazy to PM me to ask for a free key, then I can't help you. :)
-
FYI, all links from the forum spy should work fine now. (specifically, any links to new wiki-ified comments will go to the comment and not the main article)
-
Thanks! Searches still dump me to the OP in the wikified posts but that's for another day I guess..
I'll take a quick look and see if I can get that fixed.
-
Try it now. ;)

We didn't negotiate a deal yet for your branding on my keyboards. Not sure I need a sponsor, but the right monthly payment can change that. Or, in exchange you can start using a keyboard with a duck on it. Wait..
:)
I'll waive your monthly geekhack membership fee.
