Title: My Friends, Don't End Up Like This.
Post by: keyboardlover on Tue, 26 October 2010, 10:40:46
The concepts of agile (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agile_software_development) and scrum (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scrum_(development)) in software development are gaining a lot of momentum. At my previous company I worked in a team that looked quite similar to this photo:

And since many of us often ate lunch while working...

I'm not a big fan of that type of workspace though. I like a close, open approach but I don't want to give up my cube.

If somebody touches your foot accidentally is it DADT?

Usually someone makes a joke about it and everybody laughs. Once nice thing about that work setup is there's a lot of joking around.

Would be funny if that dude in the first picture got up and sent everyone out of his office :-(

Eat, or work. Doing both at the same time is unhealthy at the very least. That applies for other kinds of activities as well.

What's the average time for meals over there in the US? Germany clocked in at an average of only 45 minutes per day from what I heard, which is pretty lousy.

For me, it's about 5 minutes (not including any cooking time).  I eat hard.

My agile environment had cubes. Scrums looked like that only once a day, assuming the scrum lasted long enough for non-management to open a laptop.

Fatter.  I looks like he has no intentions of ever typing.  The only input going on is into his pie hole.

I'd hate to see the output later...

Hip?  He's got enough of his own.  Those vertical stripes aren't doing a damn thing for him either.

The pilot's case is the clincher. You can put a whole lot of "essential" crap in one of those. And his is on wheels!

As tech addicted as i may be, that picture is just uh.... very bad taste for bringing laptop + KEYBOARD to the restaurant.

If it was a starbucks i would understand. But bringing a full blown keyboard is still excessive for the outdoors :/

He put the feet up on his keyboard.  Not only table manners but his ergonomics need work.

Especially since it's an MS Natural Ergonomic 4000, which comes with that thing that fits at the front to give it the proper negative incline. I think it's called the camel toe or something.

The under camel toe lighting costs extra obviously.

I don't eat lunch or dinner at the workplace in front of the computer, and I don't like it when other people do it. The smell of food, and any strong smells, should be kept away from the workplace!
Coffee, cola, pastries, are all OK, though.

I almost always eat lunch at my desk.  I have work to do.  I don't eat over my keyboard, though, I have a big desk.

Same with me. I don't see anything wrong with it.

It's probably an American thing.

When I was working for Thales, I spent some time at their sites in France. No open plan. Big offices with between one and three people in. Often with glass dividers between offices (or rather, proper wood walls up to about waist height, and then proper glass to the ceiling). Big, chunky desks. Wooden things. Proper wood, rather than IKEA style. I've not explained that well, but you might know what I mean anyway.

It was so quiet. So much space. So good. Then I came back to open plan in the UK :(

Oh, oh, and the lunches. The food was so cheap, but so good. I hesitate to call it a staff canteen. Staff restaurant. With table wine. When I mentioned open plan, they gave a Gallic shrug and a "it's not for us" grin.

I'll shut up now. This isn't the Moschops Memory hour.

I used to do that until I realised the bosses didn't appreciate it. Some managers are complete morons, they see you eating while working and interpret it as slacking (even though you're working through your lunch hour.)

I've always eaten lunch at my desk. I figure I may as well get something done while eating, I'd just be sitting bored while eating otherwise.

It must be a different culture.  Around here, they hate to see you in the break room.

My bosses would've hated seeing us in the break room. If we had a break room.

Break rooms...hahahaha...I wish, we had a smoking room, but that's like walking into a gas chamber (in Japan).

I like my break room. It looks suspiciously like my kitchen. Other times, it resembles my den. And every so often, it looks like my bathroom.
