Actually, I knew it was called octothorpe already. And yes, it is really named after *that* Thorpe.
And last I checked, isn't it the character used before a variable name in perl to denote a hash table? I always sort of assumed that's where the name came from.

You might know it better than the symbol above 3 on the number row (DON'T LOOK!!!). And if nothing else, you've learned a new word: Octothorpe.
When I saw the title of the post, I thought by "HashTag", you meant that thing with three big squares in three of the corners, and lots of little squares everywhere else.
That thing people scan with their mobile phones to get web links.

Diacritics isn't correct since only ~ and ^ are technically correct.
You could call them sorts. Except that !, $, &, ( and ) usually came with fonts from the foundry, while other commercial signs and symbols, like @, #, %, and * were ordered as sorts, and thus you used the same style (looking Bodoni-like) whether you were setting type in Caslon or Garamond or Century Expanded.
