Title: Obama Forces Mubarak To Step Down, Expect Announcement Soon
Post by: keyboardlover on Tue, 01 February 2011, 15:08:14
This stuff is all so tightly controlled anymore. This is not really a surprise to me.

We are well past the age of revolutions.

So the Egyptian army's statement (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-12332488) had nothing to do with it then?

Sounds to me like a (relatively) peaceful revolution.

Other world leaders were simply saying to him 'Sorry, we can't help you now'.
All they did was realize it was inevitable before Mubarak did.

I don't really get how what you're saying negates the fact that this entire thing was well-controlled from the beginning.

So, Mubarak is gone but we have yet to see who will take his place and where their power will come from. And if they will be any better. The most recent similar uprisings (Moldova and Iran come to mind) did not result in revolutions. I don't think this will either. But that's just my humble opinion.

As usual, the US is giving itself far too much credit. Though I'm sure controlling 1/5 of their military budget has its perks.

Feeding the trolls as usual.

Yes, a lot still needs to happen... but I'd be very surprised if this didn't result in a meaningful democracy. Which would make it a revolution, I think. There's huge differences between Egypt and Iran and Modova! A harsh clampdown would've cost Egypt a lot.

Obama: 'he recognizes that the status quo is not sustainable'.

First Reagan telling the Soviets to bring the wall down.

Then Obama telling Mubarak to retire in California.

It's tough being a SuperPower.
This is just advice; not, unfortunately, orders that must be obeyed. If being a superpower were that simple, one could also order his replacements not to include the Muslim Brotherhood in their coalitions.

But while I had seen that pronouncement by your President in the news, I had not heard of the warm human interest story of Jhonnattan Vegas finding fame after being jolted out of his impoverished pond by the forces of anti-American dictatorship. Surely Tiger Woods had proved that golf was no longer a sport for idle capitalist oppressors, but Hugo Chavez failed to pay attention.

Let's see.

Not being happy with the government in Chechnya, they bombed the place, killing civilians indiscriminately. Some Chechens, in their desperation, turned to al-Qaeda for help, because the CIA wasn't stepping up to the plate. Go figure.

Using a claim, later shown to be false of massacres of ethnic Russians, while G. W. Bush was out of touch in Beijing because of the Olympics, they invaded Georgia and seized part of its territory, so that now Russian troops are no longer separated from this democratic ally of ours by a natural mountain barrier. When they take over all of Georgia, will that be their "last territorial demand in Europe"?

My answer, therefore, is "No". It's a pity they've rebuilt their military to a point where, once again, they're not an evil empire we can just outlaw in five minutes.

How does that differ from other super powers?

On other hand, Russia isn't western democracy it never has been and never will be.  Strong leader is one way to go...

Well, Hosni Mubarrak did make an announcement. He won't run again for the top office... in September. For some reason, however, this has not quelled the protests.

Also, they've turned the Internet back on in Egypt.

Clearly if people voted for McCain, he would have resigned yesterday.

Incidentally, McCain is a popular brand of "fries" in the British Isles -

And here I thought it was a Canadian brand of frozen French Fries!

Oh, and since I didn't want to bump the thread there, here's the find I added to my last post in the thread of (among several other songs) "What Band Are You Addicted To".

Oh, instead of adding exactly the same video twice, here's the artist singing the same song again, but only last year - and she still does it quite well, despite not being as young as she was in 1963 (but then, who is):

Having seen that allowed me to appreciate, just as the Swedes would, that she was in the audience when a newer singer was performing the song that she had a hit covering in Sweden back in 1963:

This version... took me a few seconds to recognize, being modernized.

I was hunting for something like this in Finnish, which is why I cut such a wide swath through that country's pop music.

Well, Mubarrak made his big speech yesterday when he disappointed people by not resigning... and now he decides that it is time to resign. Well, better late than never. He can always write his memoirs in exile.

I am amazed that he had that little gold Lego figure available... even if neither Taylor Swift nor Barack Obama ever won an Academy Award, it's close enough!

Obama did not force Mubarak to step down. 300,000 protesters and the Egyptian military did.

I think we know that. Ripster was being ironic in his first post; even the President of the United States, powerful though he is, does not control everything that happens in the world - and this was what Ripster was seeking to emphasize.
