Title: Moot Says Forums Are Dead - Welcome to Canv.as
Post by: Hak Foo on Thu, 31 March 2011, 00:35:30
To me, the value proposition on forums (and newsgroups, their spiritual fathers) is very strong.

Facebook:  why am I here?  What is the relationship to these other 250 people on my friends list?

With forums, there's a joining thread of shared understanding.

The guys at one forum know who I'm talking about if I name-drop Commodore Smoker.
The guys here don't, but they can tell a M10 from a M1 from a M.

I'm not sure putting on an image-uploader or an oekaki-style feature adds much to that type of relationship.

I believe BBS's are the true "spiritual fathers" of web forums.  (since, really, the experience is near identical) Many usenet groups definitely migrated to web forums, but that was more of an evolution for those groups.  Web forums are simply web-enabled BBS's.

Although there is still no standardized solution for networked subforums (which I think would be incredibly cool).  The interaction between communities in a networked subforums would be tons of fun (think FIDOnet, WWIVnet, etc).

Amen! I did operate a WWIV BBS for many years. The network was synchronizing few times per days with the other nodes.  I recall having 4 phone lines at home and once spent 900$ for a 90Mb Rodime hard drive when my full size 20Mb Miniscribe crashed. What a nightmare to restore.

20Mb... Can you imagine?

Just looked up what canv.as was. Since again, I had no clue until this thread.

It will take more than integrated image tools to move me off forums.

One step further to cloud computing. We can now all get grid of our photoshop.

People trying to get creative in the "Facebook" era of socializing everything.

Ok, now I understand ML's smile. The mystery has been solved.

It's back pain.
