Title: Internet Browsers
Post by: microsoft windows on Wed, 08 August 2012, 12:00:17
You can't have a right and proper computer-related forum without a thread for folks to argue about what software they use to view Web pages on the Internet. So here it is!

So I guess I'll kick it off with the programs I use to go on the Internet. On my main machine, a Dell Optiplex GX270, and my Micron, I use Internet Explorer 6. On my Windows 3.1 machine, my iMac, and my Power Macintosh G3, I use MSIE5.

So what browers do you use?

Opera's not a bad browser. When something doesn't work for me in Internet Explorer 6, Opera's always my second choice. Runs nice and fast and takes up very little system resources compared to Firefox and Google Chrome.

But Firefox...can't stand it. It's almost as irritating as Flash Player where they're releasing whole new versions every month or two. That needs to stop before I start using it again.

And Chrome? They hide all the stinkin' buttons! That's a big turnoff for me right there.

I mainly use Firefox...it's gotten a lot better and now I actually find it faster than Opera overall and more standards-compliant. I still use Opera a bit but Chrome is becoming my favorite second browser (also because it's fast and standards-compliant). I sometimes use IE 9 which is "ok".

Maxthon 2 for many years. Then they came out with Maxthon 3 and a new engine. Very disappointing. Roboform does not work properly with MX3 and that is a deal breaker. Also no session manager, no tab utilities type addons etc. I want to like it but the Maxthon crew makes it difficult. And their proprietary bookmarks system is the pits. Not able to use xmarks with the browser either.

1. Firefox
2. Chrome
3. Maxthon in a pinch

Firefox on Windows, Chrome on Linux, Dolphin on Android, Mercury on iOS.

I would like to use Chrome on every platform, and I feel like it will completely take over the browser market in the next few years. But I get extremely annoyed by it's quirks and it's relatively poor extensions (Firefox's ieTab implementation is much better, and chrome doesn't have a FlashGot equivalent. Not to mention that Xmarks routinely ****s up bookmark sync on Chrome). I run Linux on my old, slow computers; Firefox is noticeably slower, so I use Chrome there. But on my fast Windows 7 machine, where I do most of my web browsing, Firefox reigns supreme.

Dolphin on Android just kills. Nothing else even approaches it.

Mercury has nicer gesture support and more options than other browsers on iOS. In-built adblock is a very nice perk.

Firefox on my computers. And Sleipnir on Android, because it does gestures and especially tabs right. I also like how its interface just gets out of the way.

I use Chrome now, but for the last few years I used Firefox exclusively. There's things I still do prefer about Firefox (the Nagios extension for Chrome sucks, for example) but Chrome is overall faster and a more light weight experience thus far, so no real complaints. Firefox is a memory hog and while they've greatly improved the performance over the years, Chrome still zips past it with ease.

Wow. So many firefox users (noobs).  ;)

Everybody who prefers FF should upgrade to Palemoon. Its firefox modded to remove all the code for older processors (Pentium 1,2,3 , Old Athlons, etc). AKA NO JUNK CODE. Makes it noticably faster, has exact same functionality and layout of firefox. Srsly, i discovered this thing a year ago after years of firefox, and it is in every way an upgrade.

Firefox 14.0.1, but that is mostly because I am too lazy to switch to anything else. Browsing in multiple medium-sized windows, just as I have done since Netscape 4 in 1999. For years I was an Opera user, which I had configured like Netscape 4.
Never use tabs -- I use "window shade" in the window manager instead. Since getting a widescreen monitor, I often browse with two windows side by side.

Opera 11.11, the latest version of opera doesn't seem to like flash players, and 11.11 has the really nice feature which shows an icon and website information forn bookmarked pages on the address bar. Otherwise I resort to firefox when websites don't like opera.

Opera and Chromium on Windows, Midori on Linux.

They're all excellent for what they do. Opera has session handling which I need for work, Chromium has perfect picture rendering and is generally well supported. Midori is really light for a Webkit based browser and does Flash.

I really wanna like Firefox, but it's sluggish as hell. Even starting with the UI, and that's something I just don't wanna waste time with. Opera can open 20 tabs from your bookmarks in literally no time at all. Chromium isn't even as zippy, but on the other hand, it is more polished.

No love for iron? Iron > Chrome by far. Iron flattens chrome. I use iron primarily now.

On my wondows box, I used to use firefox 3.6, but now that they've dropped support, opera is my backup. I used to use opera primarily ('cause it's awesome!) but it can't handle my browsing habits that well (500+ tabs open: Memory HOG!)

I use midori a lot, too, if I just want something quick, and another browser is in use. No flash in windows, though. I wish midori were a little more predictable/stable.

Ofcourse, I try to get away with using links2 or links hacked, but there's just so much javascript and graphical content online nowadays. :(

Palemoon looks pretty decent, I think I'll try it next. I really despise Fierfox's (and chrome's) release schedule. Why don't they just add +5 to their version number every couple years

Technically, I still use iceweasel 3.6 on my linux machine, but that's really because iron doesn't want to load any page with a # in the URL, so I'm using it for GH at the moment.
I haven't heard of "Iuakit" before, and am looking it up now.

Iron is Chrome without some Google hooks and with some extra Iron hooks. Because the guy who distributes it wants to make money off of it himself. I recommend Chromium which is just as easy to get. It makes Iron superfluous.

What are you guys talking about? Iron is a fork of chromium. Nothing to do with chrome (other than that) Iron makes other chromiums as obsolete as element 24.

For mostly text-things, (text-based games, foruming, etc.) a text-based browser can be pretty handy. In terms of raw speed and memory footprint, links (et al. I didn't like W3m as much, etc.) and it's derivatives make your fancy GUI browsers obsolete.

microsoft windows is one of my favourite things about this forum.

I use Firefox, and at the risk of being labelled some sort of browser-hipster, I somehow missed out on using IE entirely, having gone from Netscape Navigator as my first browser in the 90's (before I even had Internet access, I used it for reading "e-zines" off demo discs) then from there onto Mozilla, then stated using "Phoenix" pretty early which obviously later become known as Firebird and then finally Firefox. I've tried IE, Opera and Chrome, but they were all a bit meh, especially Chrome which I found the most unappealing of all of them.

I'm still using Firefox; being a bit paranoid it's hard to drop NoScript and Adblock Plus, throw in a few more add-ons for fun and it's all good. I recently started messing with themes again, and while most seemed to bog Firefox down, one called 8 Ultimo (by Stefano Rosselli) seemed to shed some of the fat and ran faster than the default theme.

Bah, curl.  Handholding I say!

Real men use netcat and punch in their HTTP1.1 requests in by hand.
$ nc -v google.com 80
google.com [74.125.137.113] 80 (http) open
GET http://www.google.com/ HTTP/1.1
HTTP/1.1 200 OK
Date: Mon, 01 Oct 2012 01:39:04 GMT
....

But make sure to update your mind-parser to support HTML5.

Originally was a Firefox user way back when it was first released, but ever since discovering Opera in 2005 it has been my main browser  :D.

I have every browser installed on both OSX and Windows: Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Opera. At times I may use another browser for this or that yet Opera has stayed my favourite as it's customizable to my taste in every way: from menu items, buttons, shortcuts, userscripts, the list goes on, and all without any additional addons.

Other features I love: the easy tab management is superb (tab stacking (http://www.opera.com/browser/tips/stacking/) ftw), the ability to create custom search engines from any search box, the in-built RSS feed reader, the closed tabs menu, and the single-key (http://help.opera.com/Windows/9.52/en/keyboard.html#single-key) shortcuts (1/2 to navigate tabs, z/x for Back/Forward).

Chromium at my workplace, and Chrome at home/my other workplace since Chromium on Windows won't play my MKV files (big question here is why I'm using Windows - I don't like it). I also use Opera, Safari, Firefox and IE8 since I work with web development, mainly frontend stuff.

I also occasionally use Firefox Nightly (version 20 or something?) when I need to watch Youtube, since Chrome + bad Internet connection + Youtube don't play very well for a number of reasons.

I transitioned to Chromium recently, because it is better at multitasking with multiple tabs/windows than Firefox.

I tried using Chrome once. I installed a bunch of addons that were suggested in a thread somewhere. One of them opened me up to identity theft, though I'm not sure which it was. So I uninstalled it and went back to Firefox, which I've used for years. The only problem I have with it is if you have a small amount of memory, such as I do in my laptop, after awhile of running it bloats up insanely and slows everything down so it has to be restarted. I also have to use IE for certain things on my work laptop because of our intranet.

FF's private mode can't be run concurrently with non-private mode, last I checked, which makes it annoying enough not to use in my opinion.

LOL, I hope you're BS'ing, or you really need to get some new stuff.  I use Netscape Navigator with my 14.4k modem to dial into my Compuserve internet access using my Compaq 486.

But in all seriousness, am I the only one that uses different browsers for different purposes?  I use internet exploder, fire****s, chrome, and opera.  Different browsers are better for certain purposes, so why not use all of them?  Even on my minimal #! (crunchbang) linux system, I have chrome, fire****s, and opera.

firefox and opera.
have chrome installed, but it's ui is just terrible.
keep ie just because it's there.  (Can't stand it.)

On a side note, I get a free license (ISP subscription) of an antivirus called 'FSecure'.  I have nothing but bad things to say about that.  Basically rendered all of my browsers useless, except for IE.  As soon as I uninstalled it, everything worked as normal.

Chrome Canary
Safari

Opera is getting better too.

I make websites for a living! I hate using anything else but chrome.

I use chrome and firefox pretty frequently, but I think firefox will be the superior browser in the future. I find them to be pretty equal currently.

This has been a long debate and I think it depends on needs and in some degree likes and dislikes. I was trying some of the major contenders like IE, FF, Chrome and Safari, my main requirements are low RAM usage, speed and the possibility to use some add on's like Zotero, that I use for research and paper's management. IE is out just because of that, then I only used in 2012 the last three. I found FF to be very prone to add-ware infection and Safari support for my needs have been too restricted. I am currently using Chrome and in general it covers my needs. It is fast, not to hard on RAM and allows to use the complements I need. A bonus are the programs that help to do things like typing practice. :)  I could not recommend it to others, however, simple because I do not know other people needs, so each one has to do his / her homework.

After reading about it on another forum, I recently started using Cyberfox; it's pretty much a 64-bit clone of Firefox with the fat cut out (from the descriptions given). So far I've been enjoying it; open tabs, current settings, add-ons and their configurations , everything from Firefox seems to all have been imported. It does seem to load faster all around, but it's hard to say for sure or not, those foreign pages that take forever to load on Firefox do seem to take only a fraction of the time though (Keycool's product pages work well for testing this, lol).

I think it's a pity Opera is switching to WebKit, mostly because it's becoming the new IE6...

That doesn't hold any water in practice. WebKit is open source, and browser makers are free to alter and customize it how they want. There's actually quite a few differences between Safari and Chrome. Yes, they use the same core rendering engine, but that's about it. And the source code for Trident (IE's rendering engine) was never available, unlike with WebKit's.

You're free to use any rendering engine as long as it's WebKit? Bull****.

You're basing your argument on an alarmist, opinionated blog post? And if you're referring to the first section, the one by Daniel Glazman, then I still yet fail to see what the problem is. Browser vendors are following the market. That's what businesses do. It's a perfectly sound business decision.

Why is that "bull****" exactly? Google's already forking WebKit, which they can because it's open source. Yet again, I still fail to see what the problem is.

If you don't like WebKit, then why not write another rendering engine? Or fork WebKit and change the things you don't like about it? There's nothing stopping you from doing either.

The browsers are turning to webkit because it's a superior product (at least in their evaluation). The point is, nobody but us technical people give two ****s about WebKit vs Gecko vs Trident vs whatever... they just want the websites they visit to work.

All this comparing WebKit to IE is complete horse****. When IE6 was dominant, the rendering engine was completely closed source. Nobody could come out with a browser that competed and yet was still compatible. That's just not the case today.

PS: I've personally yet to encounter any of these so-called "webkit only" sites (and I routinely use multiple browsers). If somebody could link me to a few, that'd be awesome.

I have used just about all of the top browsers during the time I've had a PC, and ATM my preference is Firefox. I found Presto isn't as good for Flash and JavaScript plugins, while I didn't like the text rendering of WebKit browsers that weren't swamped by Google's ecosystem. I wish more browsers used Gecko; its such an underrated and underutilised piece of technology. It turned out to be a decent middle ground for me.

You don't write a new rendering engine because you have no market share. Websites won't give two ****s about being standards compatible, they often simply do it WebKit compatible. This is the reason that Opera's Presto engine died. And it was a fantastic engine. Opera played stubborn and refused to cater to the laziness and faults of web programmers, with the result that they still had to implement side-specific fixes.

It's not about what's good, it's about what works within a pre-established WebKit dominated web. You don't crack that nut.

Unfortunately, every browser nowadays is bad. Chrome has a dumbed-down interface and "join Google" written all over it, Opera will soon be just another Blink browser with a few extra features and Firefox is still slow, for a racehorse. Each has its little quirks and bugs.

Firefox, Chrome, and I use Oprah for my tablet.

Same here, but I still love using Firefox 21.0 the most.  It simply works with all the sites I frequent including all Banking/Financial Transactions.

Opera (Oprah...good one  :D ), was excellent once until it started to fall short on some websites.  But Firefox keeps on working.

For those that claim Firefox is too slow for them, then get a faster ADSL2+ connection.  Unfortunately I'm stuck in place that will never get the NBN hence Firefox is as quick as Chrome, IE, Opera and Safari.  You just need to set up the browser to run fast, rather than to accept the settings provided.

Iron.

You're better off with Chromium than Iron.  Not Chrome, but Chromium.

Yes I've used Iron, and recall the guy who created it says he only wants ad revenue out of it.  See the links above.   And it does not update nearly as often as Chromium which can be important for security reasons.

I tried the new Opera. Its nice but i prefer it on my smartphone. On the desktop there are some things i don't like, like the complicated bookmark menu or the problem with searching within a document. It seem to take a long time to search each letter by typing. Firefox is much faster in that.
Otherwise looks nice and its nice browser on the desktop as well. Right now i have Chrome, Firefox and Opera (and the mandatory IE) installed.
