Title: Re: That car thread
Post by: alaricljs on Thu, 16 August 2012, 10:20:05
Either you are brutally honest, or you did that wrong.... 4cyl 1/4 > 8 cyl 1/4  evaluates to your 4cyl time being larger than the 8cyl time.   I don't think you meant that but it is often true (with a comparably massaged v8).

Damnit I miss my CRXs

Had a prelude with the H22a motor. Thing was pretty quick bone stock. After head job, sleeve, cams, crankshaft, ect it was a beast. But there is only so much you can get out of the 4 banger.

Had lots of fun with my supra tho ^_^. Those things can hold BARS like a MOFO

i don't think you're going to find anyone who disagrees that the evo is SIGNIFICANTLY less reliable than every subaru product every made
Title: Re: That car thread
Post by: mkawa on Thu, 16 August 2012, 15:01:01
in terms of reliability, you're better off with a salvage title SVX than an evo

but the sti doesn't have the same precise feel that the evo does, period.

I only got the evo as an impulse buy... It was cheap at the time and for cheap power upgrades, evo ftw

Former Evo "fanatic" here. When I grew up, the Evo was my dream car but I recently got to drive the X and, to be honest, I felt a bit disappointed. Yes, it pulls quite well. (Granted, I've only driven/ridden sub-200 hp cars so the Evo's near 300 felt fast.) The SST transmission seems to read minds. And it handles well on the track. But, sitting inside, it doesn't feel engaging or inviting. Many have said that the interior is bad, and I have to agree. The steering wheel is a bit obnoxious with its huge center and thick cross-members. The center console is very plain with flat, shallow buttons that feel like they don't work when you press them. Crispy is the feeling. The spacious interior also adds to the heavy feeling of the Evo. Would I still want one? Yes, but only for the performance and probably not the X.

And on that note, I'd like to have a go in the STi. At least the interiors of Subarus are much better than the Evo's. I've always had the impression that Subarus are more outgoing whereas the Evos are more hardcore tryhard. In the end, a Subaru just might suit me better.

one thing to note is that the baseline wrx has a notoriously terrible transmission (the 5spd). it feels like crap, and they. break. constantly. the sti transmission on the other hand is very solid, and feels OK (it's not a honda or mazda transmission, but it feels pretty reasonable.

i've never been able to test drive an evo because the mitsu dealers were all being butts last time i did a round of dealerships.

also, if anyone is in the market now, the toyobaru looks pretty darn reasonable for an inexpensive little fun car.

Funny enough, I've heard that the current WRX is faster than the STi in a straight line because it's a 5-speed.
The FR-S/BR-Z is a very reasonable fun car. See:

At this point I'd consider getting a Subaru BRV. Those look fun to drive.

Post by: WRXChris on Sun, 19 August 2012, 18:32:18
I hear it's a lot of fun to drive, but it is a bit underpowered.  I would wait for the inevitable turbo BRZ!

And if you get an STi, the first mod I recommend is a suspension bushing overhaul.  The EVO's biggest advantage over the STi is a more direct road-feel, and suspension bushings help the STi in that department big time!
Title: Re: That car thread
Post by: mkawa on Sun, 19 August 2012, 22:48:11
ugh, don't tear apart a brand new suspension to put marginally harder aftermarket bushings in.

the brz/frs platform looks relatively nice except for the stupid boxer engine/positioning and the utter boringness of that engine. also, looking at the chassis, it seems like they gave up a lot of rigidity they didn't need to to put the stupid insurance seats in.

it seems inexpensive until you realize that what it's really competing with is used s2000s and miatas, both of which have basically perfect chassis and balance.

that said, desperately want to drive one to see, and would buy a turbo version in an instant if it were priced significantly lower than the wrx sti.

complaining about the cons of the toyobaru, yet still wants to have a go. that is the charm of the toyobaru.

It's fast, as you would expect from a 3.2, but at low speed its a nightmare... though doing 30mph in 6th is always good for a laugh

Actually I got an amazing deal. A family member was interested in the same car, and the two of us went back-and-forth between two dealers who compete heavily with each other. We got the monthly on a 3 year lease knocked down from $370 to $300/month, incl. tax. I traded in my 2006 G35x and put no money down. No one believes me when I tell them this, but it's true.

I think that a junked 240sx is our generation's ratrod or whatever.  I had one as well, front end damage, leaky auto trans and the ka motor still in it, but oh I had plans for that.  Paid $1000 for it, then sold it later for $100 when I couldn't find the title and the state showed it still had a lien on it and wouldn't get me another.
