IBM aren't considered great for gaming, as they are only 2KRO.

Why buy an old board?
Most people here prefer new ones with cherry switches for gaming.

As Djuzuh mentioned, many old boards are 2KRO. This means you can only press 2 buttons at the same time, any others won't be registered.
6KRO or more is really recommended for gaming.

Why buy an old board?  Because a Model M, if you can stand the racket, is a standard layout keyboard (in fact it defines the standard layout) which has more tactility and better keycaps than any Cherry MX based board and yet is still available for a reasonable price often in need of just a good cleaning.

I'm sure Alps fans will chime in with their equivalents...

Could you pull a keycap on the NCR?

They look like Dye Sub to me.

Clearly one should go with a model F for NKRO and buckling spring.

Buckling spring is pretty bad for gaming.  Rubber dome and cherry mx switches are much better.

nubs and their opinions...

That NCR looks like a cherry rebrand -- specifically the g8x-3000 series case. Can you take some pics of the bottom? It might be worth leaving as is rather than painting.
